I think he added water after they had fried a bit. If you add enough water it will cook the rest of the egg without burning it - but you must add it slowly so the egg doesn't cool down too much and stop cooking . My friends father used to cook them like that. The oil helps keep out the moisture so they're not watery .

Replacing the one battery with tinfoil may work on some things, but there is a reason why there should be two of them right..?(tip: think of the voltage). Have you ever heard of steel wool for cleaning stainless steel cookware..? Furthermore, you may want to do with your phone as you please, I for one wouldn't have tinfoil to scratch the display on mine.
You're right about the not ripening anymore. The best way to ripen store bought bananas you bring home, is to put them in a brown paper bag and in a darkened room, such as a closet.
