I sometimes struggle with meditation before going to bed, I find it hard to concentrate enough to clear my mind from racing thoughts when I’m really tired from a long day.
Instead, I listen to guided hypnosis videos. They are wonderful for falling asleep really fast and for going back to sleep when you wake up in the middle of the night.

What does it mean that I'm the opposite on the temperature thing? Cold keeps me awake shivering. I sleep in layers of sweatshirts and sweatpants, I have an electric blanket turned all the way up, and I have to use a space heater to get my bed area at least 85 degrees; if it's below 85 I wake up with chattering teeth. In the summertime when it's warm all the time, I'm sleepy all the time. I had a work study job back in undergrad, working the front desk of the residence hall. There was a heater beside the desk, and I was nodding off throughout my shift. If I went across the room to the sofa instead, I was fine because it was cold over there.

Not all of the time. If you have 5 exams in one week, not much you can do there. Or aren't naturally smarter like this guy you'll have to study a lot more for the same result. It true up until a point, but at the same time no college student is taught how to manage time efficiently so there's probably a lot to improve upon for the average person.

    1. Don’t eat three hours before bed.
(Big one for me, to be honest - was this mentioned?)
    2. Establish a regular bedtime and stick to it, even on weekends.
    3. Have a pre-bed routine: Put on special blue-light-blocking glasses, take a warm shower, read for twenty minutes (consider meditating based on what Med School Insiders said about it).
    4. Stop using devices 2 hours before bed.
    5. Activate “Do Not Disturb” automatically on your phone.
    6. Charge your phone as far away from you as possible so you're not tempted to check it.
    7. Avoid taking naps.
    8. Don’t drink any coffee or caffeine eight hours before sleeping.
    Did I miss any?

I’ve always needed lots of sleep to function. In hs I neglected sleep and as a result I was sick and in a brain fog all the time. However in college I made sure I made sleep my number one priority (really). It wasn’t until I changed my diet to low carb and higher protein intake that I could comfortably live on 6-7 hours of sleep instead of 9 hours.
Now as a med student my body is healthier than it has ever been even though I’m working harder/longer than ever. Diet->sleep->exercise

My sleep routine is such a chaotic spiral that I don't feel at all I can fix it. Night owl with onset insomnia that has a compulsive need to re-think all his entire day when trying to sleep and, if all the day all I ever did was studying, I start to fantasies about complex things. Hell, that 2-4 hours before falling sleep are as productive as the day itself. On the other hand, when I, by a miracle, manage to become an early riser it's all smooth: at then, I fall sleep almost in 15 minutes. But it is so incredibly hard to archive this. And the moment that "ten" becomes 1 am, it's all over. I don't know why, but from 1 am I got a second wind and it's all downhill from there, falling sleep only from 4 am to 7am.

This was extremely interesting! I have had serious clinical insomnia for over 30 years. Have tried everything under the sun and the only thing that helps me get to sleep and stay asleep consistently, is Ambien. I have tried the whole sleep hygiene, lighting, cutting caffeine, eating right, different beds, ear plugs, diffusers, relaxing music, meditation, journaling, other OTC sleep aids, prescription sleep aids, hot milk, decaf tea, eating, not eating, the whole pre and post bedtime routines,......
I’m in constant anxiety because I’m only given few Ambiens a month. So I go a week with good sleep and then the rest, with little to none. I wish doctors understood how punishing everyone because a few abuse it, really hurts us that it actually helps. Any advice would be extremely appreciated. TY

Honestly university is not as hard as you think. It depends what you take as well. But I found the layout much easier for me. Im sure it depends on the program but I was able to select courses that suited my schedule. So I would never take any 8am classes because I could not get up for them. I would try to place more classes in one day so that I could get a day off. Some programs you might not be able to do that though. With my political science degree I was able to do that. But with my nursing degree my schedule is preselected pretty much; and now I always have 8am classes.

Most women’s body work differently though, personally if the temperature is below 73/70 when I sleep I will wake up multiple times during the night and will not feel rested at all in the morning
Our body heat up at night

Do you have any tips for maintaining good sleep when you work full time in an emergency room and can’t have a regular sleep schedule?

    Four pillows of sleep
    1. Sleep depth/quality
    2. Sleep duration
    3. Continuity (are you interrupted)
    4. Regularity
    Steps
    - Determine the time you have to wake up, and try not to oversleep at weekends.
    - optimize bedroom : dark, no light, cold, naked, no noise or white noise or ear plugs. Red lights are cool.
    - pre-bedtime routine (meditate)
    -

how do you get 7-9 hours of consistent sleep if you're a surgical resident and have q3-q4 call, are being paged constantly, and have unpredictable OR schedules? I guess this question applies to any residency in general as well...

    • @MedSchoolInsiders
      @MedSchoolInsiders  4 роки тому +4

On many rotations in residency it won’t be possible to get 7-9 daily. That being said there are more opportunities to get sleep in med school and residency than people realize

@@MedSchoolInsiders it's a shame that current medical culture does not value sleep. As "wellness" becomes a bigger movement hopefully this will change. As physicians we promote healthy lifestyles but are unable to follow our own advice, and our mental/physical wellbeing suffers as a result - really ironic!

    • @MedSchoolInsiders
      @MedSchoolInsiders  4 роки тому +5

Yup. Gotta love the mandatory wellness seminars that cut into our potential sleep time. Wellness is about changing the medical training system not telling Med students and residents they need to take better care of themselves

So, 3-4 times a year, on average, I stop sleeping normally and start waking up at 2am, and my average sleep goes from 7-8 hours per night to 3-4. I do not feel tired nor sleep deprived. Any ideas why? This continues on average for 60-days. I don't have any job stress or other abnormal stress. It's also similar to what is called 'bi-phasic' sleep since part of it occurs at around 3-4pm for about 45 minutes.

Wake up lights are SO HELPFUL but I am married to a man who loathes them. I miss my sun alarm clock and have such a hard time sticking to my desired wake up schedule without disturbing my husband. I wish there were functional wake up lights inside of sleep masks that would apply to my eyeballs only. I tried the sleep oasis, which seems to be the best of what's available on the market today, and it was a total waste of money.
