I wonder if you could bandsaw the log in half ,hollow out each half and glue them back together.That would save the hair raising chain saw bit.Also whether the tone comes from the wood which is struck as opposed to the entire pate. I ask this because another clip showing a Tahitian version had a segment of obvious hard wood inset into the side of the drum where it got hit with the stick

Not sure but apparently I was told by other drum makers as long its hardwood thats all that matters. To be honest nothing beats the traditional Tamanu Tree to make the drums.

It could work... but for me nothing is better than drum being one piece of wood.
