    Employment of New Criticism is not about the uncovering of textual meaning embedded in a text but the deeper understanding of literature in its transcendental aspects. Values are apprehended not through the explication of meaning but through the embodiment of its spirit in a disinterested fashion.

Believe me, you need to expand your horizon on this perspective because this You Tube video constraints the understanding of this critical school of literary criticism.

    I always hear binary opposition. I have a few questions to ask, so that I can fully grasp the whole concept of binary opposition:
    1. What is the definition of binary opposition (in Layman's term)?
    2. Does binary opposition appear in EVERY literary theory?
    3. How does it work on those theories?
    Thank you in advance, Mr. Nance.

    Read closely, painstakingly,you make Value judgement, book has depth, look for tension complexity, book oppose other meaning,well unified, look for what makes the tension, what unifies the text as a whole,

  • @yamiladdi
    @yamiladdi 8 років тому +1

    what do you understand by tension? do you another video explaining the notion of tension with lot of examples? thank you

    • @Nancenotes
      @Nancenotes  8 років тому +5

      Tension is used to describe ideas in opposition, such as paradoxes, ironies, or other juxtaposed opposites. Look at a story like "The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings" by Marquez. In the story we have a man with wings, which remind us of freedom, but he's trapped in a cage. The man also might be an angel, but he's dirty and gross and his miracles are not helpful. There's a tension between freedom and bondage and another between the angelic and the earthly, making the story complex and interesting.

      It’s possible to resolve in a moment of recognition that one will never reach resolution. (See Sartre’s Huit Clos for example.) Also, there are plenty of works that have attempted to challenge the norms created by New Criticism. New Crit is certainly not the only theory.
