I'd argue it's Naruto who turns it all around for Kakashi. As the show progresses you see Kakashi working through his past with how Naruto confronts the world. You also see how rigid Kakashi was before he became a Genin's Jonin. Even the 3 groups before Team 7, it wasn't until after the fact that he felt good for what he did, rather than being the hard ass he was known to be. Even his friends were more distant due to his rigid ANBU nature. I also think this is why one of the best Kakashi moments is in Boruto with Guy and Mirai. The JOY they animate Kakashi with, especially as the old Ninja that he is, was fantastic.

He's seen war, lost friends and family, saw his home be destroyed in a devastating attack. But he never let that stop him from moving forward and trying to be happy again.

If I came back from work only to find out every single black person was killed by my father the level shock , depression, angry ect would be through the roof. Compared to joining the military forming a bond with a couple of comrades and losing them due to unforeseen circumstances of war which should be common knowledge that losses could occur
