This class 66 model reminds me of my Bachmann Spectrum F40PH
both are highly detailed
Both are really heavy
Both have large flywheels
Both have a great light package (the F40PH has flashing beacons)
But the F40PH was made in the 90s (before DCC was a thing), and I got it used for less than $50. It also doesn't have rotating bearing caps, just like the real F40PHs
Ooh very nice - glad to hear Bachmann have some heavy models too ;)
Merry Christmas,
Sam :)
"but the price has dropped just to 5 pounds!"
me: WHOHWOAWHAAOAWHAT
"below the *Hattons* one."
me: o-ooh...
haha!! ;D
If only! ;D
Wow so this is a top notch loco! Also exciting news; IT SNOWED LAST NIGHT!!! That might not sound exciting to someone who often sees snow, but for me here in Alabama, snow is a rare treat, my mates and I had a fun snowball fight this morning at our cars before we went into school
Ooh did it really?! That's awesome mate - did you get very much snow?! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains haha only about an inch but that might be all I see all year! Cheers!
Marvellous review Sam, very professional and without doubt the most comprehensive review I’ve seen yet! Thanks, most useful and have subscribed to the channel. All the best, Paul
Thanks very much for that Paul, really glad you enjoyed this one! Thanks for subscribing - hope you enjoy the channel!
All the best,
Sam :)
Great looking model, I’ve seen two reviews now both exclaiming just how wonderful they are so makes them very tempting even for a steam fan like me. As for could Bachmann sell there’s for even less, of corse they could they are still making a massive profit on each one. It is rather shocking to find out how little these things actually cost to make once all the development is out of the way, so the older the model more the chance that is paid for.
Thanks very much Rob - I'm certainly very tempted myself! I agree - I'd love to know the actual production costs of models such as the Bachmann 66, especially given how long ago they developed the tooling!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
well this raises the bar a tad, hope it's an increasing trend for manufacturers to increase the detail of their models further especially as this shows what is capable if you put the effort in for the top end of models, well done hattons, cant wait for my orders to arrive.....interesting to see what others have ordered as I went for Friehgtliner Orange and ONE shocking pink, so I went for high vis lol
Yeah I agree - it's particularly impressive for the price - hope you really enjoy it mate! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Interesting that the Class 66 was built in North America. It gives off a lot of EMD vibes, the fuel tank and the radial trucks (bogies) are a give away. The sound version would be cool. I love the sound of an EMD 710 prime mover!
Yeah I thought that was very interesting too! The sound is amazing -I was lucky enough to hear one run!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Awesome model! These are one of my favorite diesels! I rank it as the UKs most successful diesel! Thomas & Friends needs one of these diesels!
Thanks Ryno, I can see why too - wonderful aren't they?! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam, to update the weighing in situation, the Class 68 weighed 698g as stated, Patriot just arrived this morning, and weighs in at 742g - same scales, same place and generally they're within 1g out at that level, no more than 2g I would guess. Al.
Thanks very much for this Alan - which Patriot do you mean?!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Hattons' 66 Patriot ! Freightliner Loadhaul.
Fantastic model, great model detail and performance BUT beware the there are NO replacement parts like the motor available, not even from Hattons themselves. My fantastic class 66 is now scrap after a motor fault
I'm wouldn't mind getting a hattons Freightliner class 66 some time in the future, definitely one of the best oo gauge Models on the market in my opinion.
I've also seen 66789 in it's large logo livirie on real life
Oh yeah I can highly recommend it - for the money, they're superb - incredibly good! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi sam
First time I've commented on one of your videos.
Can I say always surprises me the amount of detail you put into your videos.
And to say I cannot wait to get a hattons 66 when they finally come out.
But with your review I will say hattons have blown Bachmanns class clean out the water.
Well done sam and well done hattons.
Peter from Birmingham
You're very kind Peter, many thanks for the comment. Really hope you enjoy your 66 as much as I enjoyed this one - these certainly have blown all others out of the water!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Excellent review. Sets the bar high for rivals
The Hattons class 66 is great even though I haven't got one however, some quality problems and faults have been seen with the locomotives.
However, this year, accurascale is coming to the rescue! Using the CAD model from Hattons model Railways, accurascale is sorting these problems out so in early 2024, the accurascale scale range should work and perform better than the Hattons version making them the best diesel locomotives ever
Kinda makes me wish I wasn't modeling exclusively steam.
To stick on the axles use a tiny dab of rubber cement. It won't damage the plastic, it will secure the boxes and you can remove and replace them easily without regluing. I use it to stick people and objects in place in rail cars and around the layout. If you make a mess, it rubs off easily.
haha yeah I know - things like this make me want to become a serious diesel enthusiast too! Yes you're right - and it definitely wouldn't take much to get them to stay there permanently! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
they dont look bad - ive heard mixed reports from them though. dapols class 68 is another brilliant locomotive. ive got one in the Direct Rail services plain blue, certainly very heavy
Yes I've seen mixed reports too - my example was superb though, except for the axle boxes which were very annoying! Also heard great things about the 68 for sure!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam, if you were part of the design process the least Hatton’s could do is give you a free sample of the finished product. I’m pretty sure your (gushing) review will help sell several of these admittedly good-looking locos.
By the way, I received a Sam’s Trains mug with a picture of Bullman on it this morning. Highly recommended!
I wasn't part of the design process, but I did give up lots of time for free to promote their 66 on my channel - it is what it is! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Mine was that good the Fuel tank fell of when I took it out it’s box
What a brilliant model, I got a Hornby br blue tornado for £85 and I got 3 blood and custard coaches for £35 I’m replacing the wheels with metal ones now!
-Ollie
Thanks Ollie - wow those are real bargains!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I thought the Barclay 0-4-0’s And P class tanks were one-offs, but Hattons has hit the mark again! Hopefully they will keep up the quality on their future models.
haha I know right - incredible stuff really!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I know I'm really late to this party but blue ta or even a drop of light oil should holds those hubcaps on Permanently enough
Class 66 is my favourite. This model looks fabulous. The detail is amazing for the price.
Great to hear that - yes they did a fantastic job!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam,
I understand that Bachmann had a more expensive version of the Class 66 out when you tested the new Hatton’s Class 66 for £150.
Did you know that Hornby were about to try and undercut both of those models with another Class 66 model which is selling at retailers for £67? (I saw the BBC documentary where Hornby did something similar - I think it’s called “How to make friends and influence people“!!!)
Obviously it won’t be as high quality as the new Hatton’s model, but Hornby are releasing some models with the same liveries and even the same engine number as models made by Hatton’s and Bachmann. And for less than half the price.
It would make an excellent Sam’s Trains episode if you compared a Class 66 with 3 models, one each from Hornby, Bachmann and Hatton’s, and ran one on each of your three main lines on your layout. Perhaps all DCC, or all DCC sound, or all DC, just to make a fair comparison? What do you think?
Yes you're right Jim - Hornby certainly are releasing a class 66, but it's far from new - it's a re-release of the original Lima model from the late 1990s/2000s - it certainly would make for a great comparison though, you're right! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam, have you done a review of the Dapol Class 68? it's got to be a very close score to the Hattons 66 with the only downside I can see being the cab detail not being to the same standard as the Hattons model. The TPE liveried one is superb too, no bleed between the colours and such a change from having a yellow end. Maybe you should get one of the next two when they come out next year to see what your view of them is?
Dale Williams
I haven't done the 68 yet ,though they do sound fantastic - thanks for the tip! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
This is a rare and beautiful sight. A BR blue Class 66. I like that.
haha I agree Tomas, glad you liked it! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
Ahhh not 66789!! Everytime this thing is around my area in real life, I seem to miss it everytime!
Great video anyway, going to enjoy watching it ;)
haha is it elusive then?!? haha!
Hope you do enjoy it mate,
Cheers,
Sam :)
One problem with increasingly heavy and powerful trains is that from time to time you get derailments. All that extra momentum will increase ensuing damage. In the past this has not mattered.
That's very true Alan - but these do seem to be incredibly reliable on the track luckily!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I'm not a fan of diesel locomotives. But in that colour scheme it is damm impressive
haha I agree - it's lovely isn't it?! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I’m going to try and pick one up soon, from memory they are doing the Flying Binman one, if not I’ll pick up the one with the large BR logos.
That's awesome mate - you can't go wrong with these really!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The class 66 looks like an engineer chassis crashed into an engine shed and I love it
haha it does actually!! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Most model trains do go for a lot of money but it's all worth it in the end.
Yeah you're right - especially with this one! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Excellent review of the brand new Hatton’s GBRail Freight Class 66 in British Rail large logo livery Sam 👍
This is my favourite one of Hatton’s as I like to see heritage livery’s on modern locomotive and this is one that I like to get with BR Mk3 carriages as well with freight working.
Which livery are you getting?
In the near future, can you review a Class 68 diesel locomotive?
Thanks so much Joe - I really loved this liver too! I'm not sure yet - maybe the Royal Scotsman one?! :D I'd love to try a 68! :d
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Oh wow I've already got a new Hornby one also it is a bit too expensive
The Hornby ones are good though. Especially the biffa one
Yeah I guess they are expensive - but great value!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam,
I thought your review was excellent and thorough with good points raised however, I think I will be the first to state that I have already had to return my Hattons Class 66789 yesterday only 2 hours after delivery as it wobbled/hopped along the track when run for the first time. The first axle at the cooler end was either bent or the wheels were not central on the axle - I noticed that your model had some bogie movement whilst on your rolling road, but nowhere near the amount mine was producing - it caused derailment on points and just looked bad on curves. The body removal was a nightmare ! 8 pieces of plastic card are needed, even though I purchased a dcc fitted version, I still had to change the skirt/buffer beam at one end as I couple at both ends on my layout.
So I am quite disappointed with my purchase after waiting for such a long time, I could not fully evaluate my model at all.
I really hope that others are not as unlucky as myself, I have a further model on order - 66783 Biffa - depending on how my situation is dealt with, will be a decisive factor regarding any further stablemates. I have a large collection of Bachmann 66's and must say that they have all run trouble free 'out of the box' and fitting a decoder has never been a difficult process as body removal is quite straight forward, so really for the fact of switching the lights independently I may revert back to the devil I know.
Best wishes for Christmas & new year....
Nigel at west hatton model railway.
Sorry to hear about that Nigel - you were right to send it back if it was derailing like that! And yes - as I say, it is a big faff to get the body off - I found the same thing! I really hope this doesn't prove to be an issue with these in general!
Merry Christmas to you too mate! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great video Sam it looks amazing but personally I am happy with my Bachmann and Hornby ones
Thanks David - for the price, this is 20x better than the Hornby and Bachmann ones - though those are perfectly fine if you already have them! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam, Very nice looks Fantastic, could not wait for you to get it on the track, love to have one , only in my dreams, All the Best Brian 🤗
Thanks very much Brian - I really hope you can get one for yourself one day! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam, You made great play of the weight in your comments. Could you explain for us non-modellers why is this such a positive? My thoughts were that any manufacturer can pop a couple of weights in to make their models heavier but I'm sure there must be more to it than that. Thanks!
It's true that any manufacturer could easily add plenty of weight to their models - but the trouble is they often don't, at least not to this extent. When we're talking the best part of 1Kg, there simply wouldn't be enough space to add that much weight what with all the other features crammed inside. Instead, Hatton's have produced an incredibly high quality die-cast chassis block that weighs over 500g - not only does this contribute to the much-needed weight, but it brings an unprecedented level of sturdiness and quality to the model, that simply couldn't be achieved by simply sticking weights onto the chassis!
I wonder if Hattons will make the ying Yings counterpart, the class 59?
That'd be very interesting to see!! :O
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
This hattons class 66 is good, but you can’t beat a good Bachmann one
I don't know about that - I couldn't find any area in which the Bachmann one was better ;)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam, the 'shed' looks great. Fantastic detail. However, I do not like the fact that the axle boxes fall out, despite Hattons say they have solved it. If I buy one I want it perfect. Sorry. Bachmann, have fallen out of favor with me, too expensive, not good quality and overpriced. That is my rant about them.
Thanks Nigel! Yes I agree on the axle boxes - they've assured me they will be fixed for the final release, and Hatton's have never broken their word up to now! I agree - Bachmann need to make changes asap!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
You should do a review on the hornby 66
Maybe I will some day! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
At last. I’ve soon we get it will fleet, like your so, H4-66-031 is Digital Fitted.
Fantastic Harry - you won't be disappointed wit hthis! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Oops! Never mind, I’ll change something like so I’m get one of is (H4-66-031) Sound Fitted [£265] of DCC. - Thank you your Videos of Sam’sTrains - Merry Christmas ‘Harry Sedgwick’ - P.S. The Member of Model Railway Club (with my UA-cam Filmed) at Carlisle Citadel Station.
Hi Sam Hope your ok
Wow that class 66 could be the best model of the year
I am going to save up for one after Christmas great video
Yes thanks Lewis, hope you are too! I think it's probably the best I've ever seen - hope you're able to get one mate! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sorry I commented so late on this video. It's because school is getting in the way with all of my assignments in one of my classes. But thank god my Winter break is coming soon. The last day will be on the 20th of December and it will be the start of my winter break.
That's okay mate - hope you're looking forward to your last day! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
wow now that is a nice diesel, but will it fall apart klke hejinns ones? or will it have a terrible motor or bit that get in the way and make it terrible like dapol? or will it be just as good as other diesels?
Generally this holds together better than the Heljan diesels I've seen - except those axleboxes of course ;)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hatton's is certainly emerging as a major force in UK railway modelling! While $198 for a top quality straight DC model is a bit pricey by US standards, you certainly get quite a bit of value. It is difficult to complain about any model Hatton's has produced thus far, and no other manufacturer can claim that type of product confidence. The only other time I've seen rotating bearing caps was on the Rivarossi (Hornby) US
U-25-C and the effect is most impressive. On the downside, the more delicate they become, the more difficult they are to handle and work on without causing damage. Overall? Just WOW.
They really are Andrew - you're right, they're pricey, but top notch value for the money. I agree - can't really fault any of their models thus far!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The best loco model I've ever seen.
Is it just me, or does it look more like lner garter blue instead of br blue?
Haha yeah it is similar to the Garter blue 😂
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Saw her yesterday in Carlisle so happy
That's amazing! Did Hatton's do a good job of capturing the prototype then?! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Yea not bad I got a short video if you want it
I’ve been waiting... love the train and it might be the best diesel
Thanks a lot mate! Yes I think it's the best! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I think you got the best livery of the UA-camrs...
haha yeah - I picked what I thought was the best one! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
One of my favourite locos is a Class 66
Marcus Junction agreed!
I can see why - very impressive machines aren't they?! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam, I just got into the whole train thing and I love it, I have watched your video about controllers because mine makes the buzzing sound on my train which is the Santa express, I wanted to buy the bauchmann you have recommended but I am not sure if it's ok for my 00 Gauge Santa express just because on the bauchmann's plug it says output 1000mA and the original hornby has 0.5mA would that not burn out my loco?
Thanks very much for that Danny! Any DC controller would be fine - the loco will draw as much current as it needs - the higher current the controller can put out, the better!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
So if you take it out of the box and run it, it is then second hand. You send it back then say can I but that second hand class 66 for £90.
haha yeah I guess - though it wouldn't go down to £90 - they seem to be going for roughly £130 second hand!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
and i have looked the fuel tank is smaller on the bachman class 66
Ooh really? That's interesting - wonder if that's accurate?
Merry Christmas,
Sam :)
That class 66 looks amazing
Thanks mate - I am amazed by it!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Does this work on the Hornby tracks,
Will this come with whole set or only the locomotive
Yes this does work with Hornby!! :D
Happy New Year,
Sam :)
Wish you the same... I am planning to get one model set, could you suggest how can I begin.
Thanks
I have watch your review of the class 66. See it look like heaven and I normal like steam train but this beat A4,P class and more. In your video it run like a angel of heaven . It more than a model it like hattons have took it from real life and change it to oo scale. Sam's train if you want one I would have to go for the 66789 BR logo blue GBRF 'British rail 1948+1997' as a have watch your review and it more better they heaven.
haha I agree Ben - it really does look like the real thing but scaled down - incredible stuff!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains You are welcome have a great Christmas.
Wow ! Now doesn’t that just prove the point that we’ve been overcharged and given less than the quality that we deserve!
But Hornby and Bachman don’t like it as has been proved recently
with the Rails and Hattons announcements
To be honest it seems a little childish and not helpful for the Hobby
Who’s next that they don’t like for producing decent models , Kernow?
It’s competition which is supposed to be a good thing
That’s what the monopolies and mergers commission was set up to stop
Well done to Hattons for an excellent model
They can do it with steam and diesel
I can’t wait to see what’s next!😊
Yes it certainly does - it proves what can be done for a reasonably low cost!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi. Do you think it would be possible to convert this model to P4?
I'm too ignorant to know the answer to that unfortunately mate! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I hate deasles but your right these are good
Glad you agree Oliver! :D
Whose stronger speedy Pete or the hattons class 66?????
Still speedy Pete by about 7 times ;)
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
so what's the detail like?
haha! xD
While you were gushing and gasping the loco cab lights do not work on analogue, on the Bachmann on the 66 they do. Your obviously in Hattons back pocket, by the fact you keep excusing the fact the cab lights do not work and keep suggesting a DCC decoder like its an excuse and does not cost much. There are many people who cannot afford DCC or young kids who would buy this and wonder why they have no cab lights. The price of a decoder may not be much to some, but a pensioner or a lad who has saved up it all adds up. I did look at buying a Hattons 66 until a friend of mine who bought one told me the cab lights only work in DCC mode. I believe Hattons have made a mistake, despite the half cocked reason they may give for cab lights not working in Analogue. Bachmann with their class 90 32-612 only have cab lights working in DCC mode and these do not work when the loco is in motion. Their excuse was it makes it more realistic. Well in real life the driver turns the cab lights on and off, there is no automated cab lights off switch on a real locomotive. Who is the driver, we are.
That's true - the lack of cab lighting on DC isn't great, but it was necessary for the total realistic control of the lighting on DCC. While your point is accurate, this model wasn't *designed* for kids and beginners; the price and level of detail demonstrate the model being targetted at serious modellers.
Young kids would buy the cheaper and more basic Hornby version, as opposed to the super detailed and much more expensive Hatton's model. If Hatton's wanted to appeal to kids or modellers on a budget, they wouldn't have produced a model like this.
Do not suggest my 'being in Hatton's back pocket' - to any right minded individual the merits of this model are abundantly clear beyond doubt. I was perfectly candid about the issues I did experience with this (failing axle boxes), but on the grand scheme of things, lack of cab lighting on DC is entirely trivial.
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains I am not talking kids as in 10 year old's or beginners. I am talking about people over 14 or pensioners who may not have the money to just update to DCC, it is not just the chip it is a decent controller too. You obviously judge serious modellers by the size of the wallet. A person can be a serious modeller without being able to splash out loads of cash to get lights. You are missing the point, someone over 14 or a pensioner may have saved to move up a level. If Hattons were just aiming at the serious modeller in my view they would just sell the model with the full bells and whistles DCC with sound. The fact that they are producing a DC model shows to use your words, they are trying to appeal to someone on a budget. Cab lighting maybe trivial to you, and I do realise it is subjective. However, what is the point in having a driver and a detailed interior if you cannot see it. Also cab lights replicate the sun shining into the cab in daylight. This point is not subjective, to suggest that is was necessary for the total realistic control of the lighting in DCC not to have the cab lights working in analogue is totally inaccurate, as anyone with any knowledge of electronics will tell you. It appear's you are just quoting what Hattons have told you when you asked the question. Also the problem with your point is this, the locomotive you are testing is not DCC it is a DC locomotive, so your blurb is not applicable to the loco you are testing. While you have not said this, and you are not accountable for what other people post, it appears this loco is not as wonderful as you have preached, as other reviews are scathing about the quality and problems with it. I do not have one so I do not know. Also, if Hattons as you say were just targeting serious modellers, they would not sell enough to make any money. Always like to watch your videos. I have found some quite interesting.
Here in america we actually kind of had a similar situation happen with a company called scaletrains. I don't own one of their locomotives, because I am more of a steam person, but I have seen some of their engines in person. The level of detail on those locomotives are actually amazing. It rivals and maybe even exceeds this class 66 on their Rivet counter line. All for an affordable price.
Ahh is that so?? I love when this happens! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
No screws? What does that remind me of??? Had a feeling you might put that short clip of the western in!!!
haha yeah!! xD
What an amazing model Sam, an excellent review from you, and it's a Credit to the Hatton's Team for producing a model of exquisite refinement and I wish them well with the sale of this model...Bob
Thanks very much bob - it certainly is - they did a wonderful job! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Guess where my Christmas money is going
Hint: I’m a 66 fanatic
haha I'm sure I can't guess! ;D
Merry Christmas,
Sam :)
Class 67?
BrightWinter721 a Hornby E2 class
BrightWinter721 a Hornby E2 class
I think I got it...
Mallard
" its gonna render all other class 66s useless'
I remember the Bachman class 66 being top notch
Granted it was few years ago
The Bachmann one was decent when it was new 10 years ago - but for the same price, this is 10x better! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
No worries
~David
Buses and trains 121 Although you have misquoted me there; I didn’t say they were useless!
My bad
Cheers
Funny thing, if ESU's Class 66 was OO and not HO it'd make the hattons example look like a triang model..
I got one of these in Euro Cargo Rail livery, maroon and yellow. The plastic bearing caps kept falling off, so I cut them short and glued in place. Imho rotating caps was an unnecessary superdetailing gimmick. Other than that I am extremely pleased with the loco in its detailing and performance. Thank you for the review! 😊 👍
Wow! It is so well made! The Class 66 locomotives are my favorite loco’s, do you know a place where many come on a station?
I agree Jens - awesome!! They're still pretty commonly seen - it shouldn't take you long to see one at most stations I'd imagine! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains oh okay 🙃 i also have a Class 66! But then a European loco (HGK DE64, red with yellow)
As a Canadian I don't really know much about British trains but for all I know currently the 47 is my favorite British loco
Near freight terminals. The Tilbury loop on the LTS gets a fair few. Grays station is probably the best place there.
do you think that the details are good because I do?
Having just seen your review on the Hornby Malcolm Rail Class 66 with the doors shrink wrap covered and seen this... Hornby really should hang their head in shame, but the big question is from me, after 2-3 years, how has the Hatton one performed long term? Great review sir.
I prefer the Hornby one's. They look and run good. And for 67 pounds you can't go wrong. Around 100 with tts sound. Great modell the Hattons one. Is there still enough room for a speaker?
The Hornby ones are certainly much cheaper - but I personally think the Hatton's ones are still best value for money! Yes, Hatton's are offering full DCC sound versions with incredibly good speakers - you wouldn't believe how good they sound compared with the TTS systems that I'm used to!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Amazing review on the Hatton's Class 66! :D
This is probably one of the best quality and most detailed diesels you've ever looked at! This definitely beats your other Class 66 locomotives and even the Dapol Class 22. :)
Yeah I agree mate - just an amazing piece of work - love it! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
That really does seem excellent, looks good quality all the way. If those hubs are fixed on the production models then it will be practically perfect in every way.
I agree Ian - that was the only criticism I could think of! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam, Greetings from the US. I purchased one of these engines and I'm really impressed with the level of details. Can you recommend a sound decoder for the engine?
Thanks
The livery on that class 66 looks beautiful
💙💛💙💛💙💛
I agree Connor! :D
Hi Sam, Another great review and very in-depth in site on the class 66. Great Livery, i do think GBRf do really push the boat out for having many one of a kind liveries in their fleet, this one looks the biz and definitely one to order. Great attention to detail and i do think hatton’s have set a new bench mark in the quality of a model. It does leave me with a very important question... Will this loco run under water 💧 haha, we’ll see but you are very brave, if you ever do try it, some day. Food for thought. 🤔🤔🤔 👍Thumbs Up 👍
Thanks very much Jamie - yeah I agree, some of them are fantastic! haha I don't think I'll be submerging this one any time soon, lol! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great review on hattons 66 . Do hattons actually manufacture these? I'm still quite happy with my 5 Bachmann 66s i purchased around 2010 and only recently come out of storage since 2012 . I think you can go a bit overboard with details on a working model loco especially if you carnt really see it and bits start falling off . I quite happily run a heljan 86 with the complete buffer beam removed when hauling a rake with no interference from the couplings ... if on display or solo you just simply push the complete buffer assembly back into place ... it looks like its part of the chassis but isn't. Its a separate item. I have the 2010 heljan 86 city of Lancaster. Its good if you don't mind running a train whitout buffers but you can't really notice
Hattons don't, but Accurascale have taken the tooling over 🙂
I really want this, but sadly they are all sold out now (1 year later)
If you don't know what my favourite Class of all time is, watch my channel and you will know, but I'll tell you, it's the Class 66 ;)
I love the GBRf BR Large Logo Blue...
Great video, stay safe and take care :)
Ahh sorry to hear that - I think they have just sold out :(
Good choice - I don't blame you for that!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Amazing model. No wonder Bachmann are gnashing their teeth and refusing to supply Hatton's as being a rival manufacturer. It will interesting to see how these Hatton's models do in the long term. With all that weight one wonders how long the motor will last!
haha yeah I know - it's a great shame though - if only they'd compete by producing better models, rather than trying to quash competition by refusing to supply them. Yes that's true - though the motors are extremely beefy, I can't see them failing under reasonable use!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I have just bought the class 66 as hattons is doing £30off so £119 FOR A CLASS 66 BEAT THAT BACHMAN
Ooh fantastic - great value at that price!! :D
Merry Christmas - Sam :)
Remarkable impressive work they did with that beautiful model would buy it
*when you are an American obsessed with Britain and are building a UK model railway buy importing basically everything from Hattons and ROS.*
haha that sounds awesome mate!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam so are you going to actually buy one?
666th comment I'm expecting something bad to happen...
I may do one day - but I'd rather buy models that I haven't already reviewed, for the sake of my channel! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@@SamsTrains go on, go treat yourself to this. Doesn't matter about the channel go buy one as a treat for being the best on yt
Impressive model, really liked the review. I do hope that the axle boxes will be glued on when the model is released, the level of detail on that thing is amazing and puts the Bachmann one to shame. Nice review.
Thanks a lot mate - I'm told they will be, which is great news! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Just came across this again whilst browsing.
Can't believe it's been 3 years!
Hey Sam Great Video i was thinking are you going to get the new A4 Bittern With Two Tenders?
Thanks very much mate, I may well do! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam, I've seen many other reviews of this Hattons Class 66, not nice ones I'm afraid with most of the separately fitted parts coming off or falling off and needing gluing back, some had issues with axel boxes and there were times when Hattons had refused to accept returns.
I'm told the second batch of these locos that should be out pretty soon a somewhat better than the first lot, I'd like to know your thoughts on this as I wanna get myself one of these if the problems are fixed.😊
Yes I've heard about that - the axle boxes were very annoying on the example I reviewed too, though I must admit that was the only problem I had! Let's hope the next batch is much better!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Wow.. best model of 2019?
18:55 LOL
haha! ;D
Well it will infect nature
Did you get the hornby one captain Tom Moore limited edition
No I didn't - they look awesome though! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Let's have a class 68 sound decoder in the class 66 then it will sound like class 68 action
That'd be awesome! :D
Wow, the fact that this might be one of the first production locos in the UK with rotating bearing caps is a little insane. We've been getting rolling stock with them for a good few years here in the US, and it's a standard feature on most high end diesels.
Yeah I know - it is very much about time! ;D
But for just £150 - it's pretty unprecedented, even in the US!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
"The largest order of locomotives since the steam era"
when you realized that BR executed order 66 to purge (or actually replacing) the classic diesels and it's the largest order of diesels
Ahh yeah, that's the sad truth I suppose! :(
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thought it was EWS that ordered 250 class 66's and they were first in country I remember seeing 66001 arriving at our depot
Wow Sam these are awesome, I'll think if I was to get one of these Class 66's it would be the Euro Cargo with EWS branding. As I like the extra WASP Stripe printing on the lower buffer beams which is cool that the normal plain black. A loco with Super Duper detailing from Hatton's and at £150, it is great to see such a price for a model that is DCC Ready which have been nearer the £200 in recent years. Cheers for the review and seeing this Class 66 up close. I am looking forward then, to the soon to be release Three Beasties version for myself.
Thanks very much John - I agree, refreshing to see such a detailed model for such a reasonable price! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The class 66 is my ALL TIME FAVORITE locomotive. I can only imagine the size and weight of a O-Gauge Class 66 loco.
Ooh very good choice - I can't wait to see Dapol's O gauge one!! :D
Happy New Year - Sam :)
You obviously didn't have to drive the damned things for a living.
Sam be like:
Dear Santa, I want a Hatton's Class 66. Thank you very much.
Sam
haha, hopefully santa listens! :D

The Lima 66 should have been the model that saw Limas HO gauge spec applied to a 00 gauge model. Riko International who specified Limas UK models could not be convinced back in 1998 that modellers would be prepared to spend £75 for a locomotive with 4 axle drive , can motor / flywheels & lights. Also at this time Lima & Hornby would not make modern freight wagons again not convinced that modellers would pay £17.50 - £21.95 for a bogie aggregate wagon / intermodal container flat. So as you can see , the stage was set for Bachmann to clean up. Lima & Hornby just wouldnt listen , Bachmann did. The class 158 in 1995 with its 4 axle drive , lights etc being the statement of intent. You can make the Lima 66 look pretty good with some work & until the Bachmann model it looked the part when done up & haul the wagons , understimate how good the Lima mechanism is at your peril, got Lima class 87's at 40 years old & they run like a dream, dead easy to maintain , basically run forever. The problem these days is that freight stock models are to heavy, to much weight thats not needed. Take the weights out , stick on the scales & see what a con models are with all that weight being pulled about that does very little to aid running, all your doing is basically burning more electricity, increased brush wear, more strain on the motor & wear the traction tyres away quicker.
I have a Bachmann 66 , its pretty good for its age, problem is the lousy road holding when hauling Bachmanns freight stock. On perfectly level track its fine , going round by itself its ok, the moment load is added then the middle axle on each bogie becomes a pivot, its garden shed engineering to not have a compensated middle axle. Theres no real need for 6 axle drive , 4 axles is just fine as the Dapol 68 proves. So the with the middle axle acting as a pivot the moment it hits a point or bit of uneven track the front wheel lifts & misses the rails. Rolls Royce models at Rolls Royce prices is what Bachmanns head stated , really. The models use has been somewhat limited, but one of the joys of having the OHLE up is that you can use 25kvac models instead so Lima class 92's & pairs of Hornby (Margate made) class 90's do the work along with Dapols class 68.
Been eyeing up a Hattons 66 for a while, read some good & some pretty dire reviews of these models, some buyers very satisfied, some couldnt get them sent back to Hattons quick enough. Then you see the ESU HO model at over £400. at £150 the Hattons / Bachmann models may appear expensive , i find £150 a fair stack of money, Is it a step forward for 00 , hard to say really, the problem is that the UK market will not stomach £345 for a loco which is how much the Marklin / Trix HO model is & the all singing , dancing ESU model with its smoke unit, dcc features. When you review a model like this putting it on the front of 10-15 of Bachmanns HTA's is whats required as they weigh a ton , the Bachmann one we have hauls 9 with ease when its on the rails & it will shift 4 pairs of Dapols dead weight IKA intermodal wagons pretty easy / up there with the Dapol 68 for shifting these wagons. Mehano's HO model also looks very good, never read anything bad about these. The Mehano tgv duplex we have is a superb runner, (just finally got a pack of the intermediate coaches to make it look the part) & so a Mehano one is tempting, back when Hornby & Lima refused to make freight wagons (despite keep making heavy freight locomotives) so i invested in HO scale freight stock for our locos to haul so a HO model is not a problem.
When i got rid of my Lima 66's i did envisage a fair few Bachmann replacements ,but after seeing how the one we have has been very hit & miss ive held off. I was hoping the Hattons one would address the road holding issues when hauling dead weight wagon sets. Having seen a fair few reviews Im still no wiser :)
Hey Sam what a wonderful loco that is and I'm died in the wool GWR steam man! I think I'll invest in one too! Great review, you didn't let your heart rule your head ref. the axles either! My Guagemaster has simulators fitted, I think this loco would run so we'll using them! Take care now, Terry.
Thanks a lot Terry - you'll probably really enjoy these, they're excellent! I bet this would run great on the simulated gaugemaster controllers! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The amount of locos in my collection is dictated by the following simple formula
N+1
N= the amount of locos I currently own.
haha, so you order one every day?! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains it feels like it.
