We've had that worst case happen 3 times where we live. We're on the bottom floor of a 3 story apartment building. So each time the main line gets plugged up, It comes out of the bathtub and toilet at warp speed. The first time it was caused by an idiot that got evicted...He decided to empty his cat litter box into the toilet and kept flushing until it wasn't visible... We're on the bottom of the system, so guess where it all collected... Another neighbor got screamed at by the maintenance manager, he told everyone on our side of the building NOT to use the showers and NOT to flush the john's until the line was fully snaked out. This ditzbag gave her kids full baths that evening (plumber was scheduled first thing in the AM).. When asked why she would do such a stupid thing, (as it flooded our bathroom out) She had the nerve to say "My kids always take a bath before going to bed, It's not backing up for us-So it's not our problem) (She got evicted a few months later)
The other issue that caused the back ups twice more? FLUSH WIPES ARE NOT FLUSHABLE!!!!! Those nasty wipes contrary to advertising are NOT safe for septic or sewer lines!! The last two times we had the pipe snaked (think main sewer trunk line....Big Boy!!) The company pulled out massive handfulls of those nasty wipes. It was like a rock hard stoppage in the pipes!! If you're worried about getting your rear end 100% squeaky clean: Get a Bidet- Your 'exit ramp' will thank you for it!

Ugh I live on bottom floor apartment right now and we expect about 2-4 times a year for the main line to get clogged and stuff to completely run up in our toilet and through the bathtub... The maintenance men that come are obviously not fully knowledgeable and we are always left with a huuuuge mess to clean. The owner isn't seeming to even try to get it fixed over all these years, but claims it happens from roots from trees. I just don't know but everything just always feels like it's held together with glue and everything always feels dirty to me now :( I want to move so bad.

Backflow sewage getting into a home from the cities main can be easily avoided by a backflow preventer device their not required code in most states areas of the usa but it should be considered as a requirement for all new home construction and a requirement in home already built most installers recommend two of them and also recommend a 5 inch sewage pipe with a minimum sidewall thickness of 1/4 of a inch staring from the city main line right up to your house and space them 8 feet apart.

Major oof. Anyone who owns a home needs to know several key things about their own house. At the very top spots on that list are where your water and electrical shutoff points are. Knowing where those are could save you literally thousands in damages in the event something goes wrong with certain pipes, fixtures, or appliances in your home. A single fried outlet or a wet patch of floor is better than a charred shell or a black mold infestation by a long shot.

In that last week my toilet and bathtub overflowed with raw sewage three times including the day of my move. On that day I once again notified the building and moved my unsoiled things out. Those that were soiled I left and thankfully was partially reimbursed for. A similar thing happened at my current building when I lived on the first floor. Long story short. I have a story about failed plumbing. I was sleeping, it was 5:30 AM. I heard dripping noises in my bedroom, which is about 4 meters away from the bathroom. Turns out, they were renovating the apartment upstairs and the plumbers closed all the valves except one which was connected to a washing machine faucet. Given that the pressure is highest around 5-6AM because nobody is using the building (it's a 19 story building so it has its own pump), the faucet flew away and our apartment was pretty much flooded. It was funny and terrifying to see a waterfall coming down my living room window.
The worst part is that due to the bathroom upstairs being renovated, the workers didn't bother cleaning the mess made by destroying the walls and all of that ceramic crap ended up in the drain, which led to more floods, albeit only limited to the bathroom and the distribution box. Luckily, there were no blown fuses nor electrocutions. I guess you've seen all sorts of stuff...

My bathroom was the closest to the septic tank, well needless to say WE HAD A BLOCKAGE. All the sudden i feel cold water splash up on me. I tried to jump up before it hit me, but it was far too late. Me and my Dad (both plumbers) spent our friday night unclogging our septic tank. Also, when we went to take one of the concrete caps off the first tank the pressure that came loose from the tank was crazy! The house was only 5 years old, and somehow our septic tank was slam full. It sounded like someone took a cap off a soda bottle. Anyone ever experienced that?

I lived in Jacksonville Florida for a while in an apartment with *so* many problems. The plumbing was probably the worst though. In the 6 months I lived in that apartment, I think I came home probably 7-10 times to find the sink, toilet, bathtub, and even *dishwasher* flooded with grey-brown water. This would happen whenever it rained heavily which.... it was Florida.... during the summer...
I remember you could tell it had happened again every time you walked in the door because it smelled like a sewer because... well.... there was sewer water EVERYWHERE.
    Disgusting.
Literally had black and brown "mystery sludge" covering any dishes in the sink/bottom rack in the dishwasher, multiple times.
Ultimately had to just move because the apartment maintenance couldn't figure it out.
    *Edit*
Interestingly enough I had a friend who was a plumber there. He said he got called to a small house with 5-6 girls sharing rent. They had backed up the (only) toilet a week earlier, and hadn't called. They simply kept using it and would occasionally try and re-flush, which obviously failed. They only called when the feces/urine/water was literally at the rim and they couldn't go any more.
He walked out and told them to call back when they'd finished shoveling out their toilet, but that it wasn't his job to literally clean out over a weeks worth of negligence.

In 2013 there was extreme flooding in southern Alberta, Canada. If you didn’t have flood waters in your basement, you surely had sewer backup. My basement had about a foot of raw sewage covering the entire basement floor. It was BAD.

what I saw was the main water line braking at the and of my small street, the water was above the sidewalk. I walked there to have a look, giant water spout.
then the fire department came and was like GTFU later I found out why. the water knocked away all that sand and made a GIANT explosion crater in the floor. where I was standing the stones were holding themself up

I like your channel cuz it's not like the typical, plumber reacts and that's it. I like that you give tips after the fail, and that can be helpfull to the people that are studing that.

Best story I have is one night around 2:00am I got up to use the toilet. Sitting there doing what you do I can hear water running in the pipes.
I knew it was going to be a bad night. Checked all the plumbing in the house, all looked fine. I grabbed a torch and took a look under the house. Water as far as I could see.
I shut off the water and went to bed, that’s a daylight problem.
Turns out the slab from my driveway had settled on the main water pipe into the house and crushed it.
It cost me 2K to get the line reroute into the house. It was over a decade ago so it was a lot of money. But not expensive for the work they did.👍

I agree 100% people should know where their stop cork is. Really, whoever you buy or rent from should make sure you know before you move in. When I first moved into my flat, one of the taps on my bath got stuck on at full blast and I had no idea where the stop cork was. I eventually found it (inside a small hole in the very back of a kitchen corner cupboard) but by that time, the bathroom and hallway were flooded, I had put a hole in my kitchen lino (moving my washing machine to check behind it) and I had removed a section of wood from under my kitchen cupboards as well as the side panel of my bath. I thought stop corks were always under the kitchen sink but mine isn't for some reason. It was a nightmare. This was literally the same week I moved in.

I live in Wichita Falls, Tx, just a couple hours north of you. I woke up one morning to the sound of gushing water, and when I went to investigate I saw that my toilet was shooting out clear sewage about 2ft high. It lasted for about 30 seconds before I ran outside to see what was happening... the great city of Wichita Falls decided to pressurize the sewer lines to blow out a clog, and well I got stuck cleaning up their mess since they disappeared when I told them what happened. I would have at least liked a warning beforehand.
