Excellent commentary from his fellow Jesuit, Fr. James Martin. If I were voting in the next papal conclave, white smoke would signal an American Jesuit, a wise teacher, a spiritual director par excellence, a great communicator, on his path to lead The Catholic Church!

An important effort by the Pope and his collaborators, urging us to rid ourselves of our selfish individualism. The complex interdependence of spiritual, environmental, social and economic issues must be approached comprehensively by competent interdisciplinary teams in order to tackle the great task of promoting sustainable development of specific regions and eventually of the whole world. Hopefully this inspiring Encyclical will prompt a positive response from all men of good will.

I think it is wonderful that science and the church can work together for the greater good of all the people and our earth.

Excellent, Fr. James Martin, SJ! Thanks!
Maybe more of these "10 Points" can be done from different elements of the encyclicals. (Even from previous ones!)

This would be easier to follow if the annoying background music were removed.

If the catholic church wishes to survive in this day in age they need to continue to adapt and change. The only reason people love Pope Francis is because he appeals to the millennials. The catholic church made a smart move taking Pope Benedict down from his papacy. I hope the cardinals aren't afraid to adjust the church's teachings because that's the only way the Catholic church will stay relevant in the future.

Are you serious? The church needs to change and conform to an evil world?

I'm totally secular in my outlook and Laudato Si is one of the most beautiful documents I've ever read. I love Pope Francis.

I am a Catholic and a vegan. While this information is not taught or known broadly, worldwide animal agriculture is one of the biggest drivers of world hunger, rainforest deforestation, ocean acidification and ocean dead zones, the modern "diseases of affluence" and also threatens to plunge the entire population of Earth into an age where antibiotics become obsolete as antibiotic-resistant bacteria are proliferating in factory farm settings where antibiotics are given preemptively not only for disease control in unsanitary and crowded conditions where disease would inevitably occur, but because antibiotics also cause the animals to mature faster and to be able to be brought to slaughter faster. It takes an average of 16 pounds of grain to produce one pound of edible flesh. Producing meat, eggs, and dairy is also a waste of our natural resources and to create a single beef patty for a hamburger, as much water is used as one months' worth of showering for one individual. The impact on the environment, with the clear-cutting of the rainforest and all other wasteful and harmful ecological impacts of animal agriculture, is a major driver of greenhouse gas emissions. I don't think the whole world will necessarily ever go vegan, but I think the whole world, perhaps led by informed Christians, needs to dramatically reduce their consumption of meat, eggs and dairy. To do less is to indulge in GREED and GLUTTONY. If you're eating in a way that makes it so that others cannot eat, what else would you call that, but greed and gluttony? We were given dominion, yes, to CARE for animals. God never, ever said that he gave us animals for food. In raising them the way that we are, we are slapping God in the face and desecrating the Earth that he gave us, squandering resources, recklessly causing our world to go right up to the brink. This is not, I am sure, the way God wants us to live. I am so glad Pope Francis is focusing so much on the environment. God bless!
