- We're so used to narratives out of Africa being about war, poverty and devastation, says TED Fellow Wanuri Kahiu. Where's the fun? Introducing "AfroBubbleGum" -- African art that's vibrant, lighthearted and without a political agenda. Rethink the value of all that is unserious as Kahiu explains why we need art that captures the full range of human experiences to tell the stories of Africa.

"happiness is a privilege in this current, splintered world where remaining hopeful requires diligence."
so true
What is it with this people with the dislikes👎🏽whats so wrong about the talk or this people never get to see the right side of things in their lives. Smh
I am on board with all that she said, very good.
Just for the sake of imagination. That is a beautiful mission. Often times we get so absorbed by the rules and guidelines. I believe ART is unlimited and free. Your story is inspiring.
Fun is political. What a needed and refreshing perspective Wanuri offers.
Yes. There needs to be a more normalization of all people. Stop putting labels on them and just have them be seen as living life as everyone else. Because that's how it is. We are all pushing through this life and all want to be happier.
Diversity was the cause of numerous falls of civilization.
That's an historical fact, that's what we are living now.
Allow us to react please.
Diversity didn't even exist until relatively recently, all populations were almost entirely homogenous. There are no civilisations that fell because of diversity, you have no examples that imply otherwise.
BS proof?
I think you might want to learn a bit more about European history.
A truly incredible speech ! Her words were vibrant and inspiring! I am definitely going to read her stories and watch her films ! She is an original ! unique and artistic ! Much love and respect from Greece !
Dear Americans: Africa won't just stop existing because you hit the thumbs-down button. Calm yourselves, take a deep breath. You can get through this. It can be hard to get your head around at first but...other cultures exist.
I can't believe how many people there are that just follow TED to dislike every video and spout racism in the comments... Honest to god
Primitive urges? You mean art? The topic of this video is art. Every culture makes art, are you upset because you don't like this particular art?
(Also it's pretty funny for an American to come to this video and complain about 'inferior culture')
Finger painting is art. Cave paintings are art. Something can be primitive and art at the same time. There's nothing special about art in itself, for example native art is garbage.
Now, I'm not sure what you mean about it being funny for Americans to complain about inferior culture. Who else should complain about inferior culture, if not members of a superior culture? How else will culturally inferior people learn?
You're attempting to retroactively justify your earlier ignorance, but in doing so you're only making yourself look worse. You accept that this art IS art, but you also claim other people should stop "humoring" them so that they modernise. As if rejecting art is going to bring the whole continent up to your standards. That's the conclusion that you necessarily follow, and it's insane.
If "culturally inferior" people are to learn, it probably shouldn't be from the trashcan of the West. The USA is a laughing stock worldwide, and should probably fix itself before its denizens lecture others around the globe.
American English has its own spelling and syntax, which is how I knew (incase you were wondering)
Sure, melting pot etc etc, but if you think the USA isn't racist then you're delusional.
She lives in a beautiful world 😊
Yes, Africa needs to propagate, and believe in, a happy narrative.
Edit - punctuation
this is beautiful and seriously needed,
People getting mad over African art...
vtech325 RIGHT! Ffs these assholes are a black hole of misery.
It seems like a majority of Tedtalks subscribers are mad about everything.
Not to mention Majestic Casual miasma
Most of these people who are outraged are white nationalists or people who just believe in this fake theory of "white genocide".
Majestic CasuaI Who cares if there was an influx of those ideas. Shouldn't a diversity of ideas be welcomed more or just as much as a diverse population?
Good talk. This comment section is toxic.
beliefless dogmasless you child
I thought this talk was so delightful.
Jut found her, and I’m obsessed..
Awesome and so inspiring to all! Thank you for sharing...Peace Love and Light!....Blessings to you and your family!

I fully agree
I will never say this hard enough : I fucking hate the ted jingle at the beginning
A challenge worth taking on. #funafrican
amen !
This is just an an average art talk, I see no reason at all to be opposed to this short talk
Why is she wearing the flag of the province of Noord Brabant?
Bubblegum?
brilliant
WE
Maybe she should of just talked about art instead of introducing....yeah
First got one
Xe muc
Completely disagree with the notion that happiness is a privilege in todays world. Sends the wrong message that happiness is only possible if you acknowledge the perceived understanding of the world today.
Look there is a woman talking, people have to hate this video of course! TED, you should just close the comment sections on your videos and disable the like/dislike ratio...
Nah... that's never productive honestly. It's important that people are able to discuss things, even if there are trolls everywhere.
emberchord so just silence everyone because they hurt your feelings?
emberchord No! That should never happen you god damn fascist!
First.
"Art"
It's art whether you are triggered by it or not. In fact, it's even more valid art if it manages to trigger you...
Sweet Meats I think you are the one who is triggered
Just curious, what do you thing the 'E' in TED stands for?
Lame
that is bad art ,
those are poor ideas old ideas,
that continent is just a reminder of the worst of the world.
the future will be different
How is writing about people growing plants a "bad art"?
sorry if offend you i just say what i think when it comes to blacks everybody is so sensitive
No such thing as bad art. Just because high-minded serious art gains critical praise does not make other art bad in any way. And all art, popular or exclusive, is a recombination of earlier ideas.
you should listen this song is so good
