PLOT: In 1836, the Mexican army, led by General Santa Anna, is invading Texas. Hoping to create a diversion for Santa Anna's forces, General Sam Houston (Richard Boone) orders Colonel William B. Travis (Laurence Harvey), joined by Colonels Jim Bowie (Richard Widmark) and Davy Crockett (John Wayne), to lead a small, heroic band of American and Texican fighters in a resistance battle at the Alamo mission. The carnage at the Alamo further spurs the Republic of Texas toward freedom.

John Wayne did a great job directing and starring in this epic about the Alamo, especially considering this was his first time ever directing a movie. The action scenes and battle scenes are done very well, and he definitely picked up tips on how to do them properly from starring in John Ford's Cavalry Western Trilogy. And Richard Widmark's(as Jim Bowie) Seven-Barrel Pepperbox Rifle was really cool.
Duke learned from the best by starring in the masterpieces of the Western genre by the legendary Director John Ford like Stagecoach (1939), Fort Apache (1947), She Wore A Yellow Ribbon (1949), Rio Grande (1950), The Searchers (1956), and The Horse Soldiers (1959). Not to mention the Western masterpieces he starred in for the legendary Director Howard Hawks, Red River (1948) and Rio Bravo (1959).
John Wayne used all of that knowledge and directed a great classic himself, The Alamo (1960), that got a well deserved Best Picture Oscar Nomination. It was great year for War Epics too, considering Stanley Kubrick's Spartacus (1960) starring Kirk Douglas and Otto Preminger's Exodus (1960) starring Paul Newman were also released that year.
