  • In this special episode of Harp Tuesday I'm very excited to show off my new Excalibur lever harp! (Made by Camac Harps and purchased from the Virginia Harp Center).
    It's a super fun harp to play - I do some live improv to give you a chance to hear how it sounds! Will be doing a lot more videos featuring this harp on locations around beautiful Victoria, BC.
    The Virginia Harp Center can be found at www.vaharpcent...

    Incredible, I love the sound of the harp! So soft, mellow- but strong. Gorgeous, really! Now I am really tempted to buy one myself, there is an offer of an older, used excalibur...Envious now to play it!

    I've never had Camac in my mind. The harp stores nearby only have Salvi and L&H - which I really love, but this Excalibur just blew my mind. It sounds so rich and balanced. I need to check that out. Thanks for sharing!

      Yeah, Salvi and L&H are great too, but definitely worth trying a Camac if you get a chance!

    I used to play a Camac Celtic Isolde but i had to sell it when we moved overseas. Now I'm thinking of buying an Excalibur as my new harp. Unfortunately, there's no Camac store nearby and the shops who could order from Camac usually have a very limited selection of harps on the floor in their showrooms, so it's almost impossible to compare both harps directly. I'm super grateful for your review, the Excalibur seems to be worth the money!!!

    I was searching high and low for a Camac when I was shopping for a harp, but they seemed impossible to find in Canada! I will have to enjoy it vicariously through you. :)

    I’ve played Camac’s in the past and I totally think the brightness is due to the strings. I helped design the harp I currently play and I requested that the maker use Alliance strings, like Camac uses, and it has a very similar brightness to it.
    Your Excalibur sounds beautiful, btw. Kudos from another PNW Harper!

    Wow I love the sound, absolutely beautiful!!
    You should do a show-off video of all your harps (maybe you've already did, I have yet to check out your videos).

    Hello,
    Crazy question… But a harp is an investment long term, even for life for many.
    So my question is…Is there a method to choosing the colour/finish of the harp for different applications? Could you advise on the colour to choose? Thank you 😊

    Hi +Josh Layne. I've got another question about the Range of a Celtic Harp. Wouldn't it be weird if a Celtic Harp would have the Same Range of Strings just like a Concert Harp? I would be delighted on getting a Camac Excalibur, then I would play all kinds of pieces even so many Harp Cadenzas that were written for the Pedal Harp, but I can transpose them to Celtic Harp!

    Heya Josh, I'm a big fan from Toronto. I have a dusty strings 36 string Koa lever harp. Would love to see more harp Tuesdays showing classical pieces on lever. What do you think? PS: you still doing Skype teaching?

    • @JoshLayne
      @JoshLayne  7 років тому

      Hey, thanks! Will definitely try to do more episodes of classical music on lever harp :) And yep, still doing a lot of teaching via Skype! (At least 60% Skype vs. in person, I think - I love it and it's so convenient :)).

    I’ve been looking everywhere on the internet to find out whether the Excalibur has concert string spacing or even?

    • @JoshLayne
      @JoshLayne  6 років тому

      Hi Lisa, do you mean spacing or tension? The spacing feels like normal spacing to me - the same as pedal harps and most lever harps. The tension is less than a pedal harp - it's strung relatively lightly (about a 4th lighter than pedal) but as someone who is used to pedal harp and has strong hands it still feels very satisfying to play to me. Hope that helps!

    • @lisalohr9893
      @lisalohr9893 6 років тому

      Josh, thanks for replying! I was wondering about the spacing. I learned on a pedal harp but my current Dusty Strings lever harp strings seem closer together. It throws me off. I am thinking about this Excalibur, thanks to your posts, but need concert spaced strings, or whatever the spacing is on a pedal harp. Thanks again for the reply.

      @@lisalohr9893 Have you thought about the 38 strung Camac Isolde ? It comes in two models : the Camac Isolde 'Celtique' which is more lightly strung with the narrowing spacing that you find with most Celtic harps. However, the second model is the Camac Isolde 'Classique' which has pedal harp spacing and pedal harp tension. Both models have the additional option of a decorative soundboard and amplification system.

    Is it possible to get pedal harps at this size?

    • @JoshLayne
      @JoshLayne  5 років тому +1

      Camac, Lyon and Healy, Salvi, all offer 40 string pedal harps. They'll definitely be heavier, due to the mechanism required for the pedals. There's also the option of a restored older harp, such as an Erard, which might offer a similar size. And there are also single action harps, for example: www.fischerharfen.de/en/fischer_volksharfe_mod_2000
      Hope that helps!
