If a driver does deliveries all the time with the same truck. It’s easy. Not to mention you have to have spreader chains. And most trucks are different. Every driver could do this with practice. Most don’t do deliveries all day.

Some folks complain about a driver being old and slow but some of them save a lot of time by doing a real quality job. You can dump stone fast but make more work when it comes to spreading it out and leveling it off.
    Keep up the good work.

I found an employer who does not care how long it takes for me to do my job. Now I can take pride in my job, make people happy and do the job once properly rather than spinning my wheels.
Honestly, the guy who shorted my hours every paycheck and treated me like garbage ended up being a few loads short on his projects. He even claimed I was a little on the light side, but little did he know just how light. Maybe by about 20 less hours a month should do sir..

Yep. Back in my rookie year I was asked to spread gravel on a driveway. I didn’t even know this could be done. I thought the chains were for securing the gate if the locks failed.
The man said “can you spread it nice and even?”
Me in my rookie confidence “Absolutely!”
After dumping 4 three foot tall piles he lost his mind.
I’m lucky I didn’t get my ass kicked that day!
“And don’t you ever come back!”
It still rings loudly in my ear today.

I just tell them I can't spread it but I'll try. Even though I can spread it. That way there is no high expectation, and they are happy when it's done. I took the chains off my truck so they would be less likely to ask . If you tell them you can spread it, they have to high of expectations expecting you to do all the work. Once the material starts to come out, just drive forward in a low gear, and that spreads it well enough to pretty it up with a machine. Was just doing parking lot/driveway yesterday. Never had any complaints. Most people are just to cheap to rent or hire a machine

Many contract haulers for quarries employ drivers working part time. All they can do is drive the truck and dump the load. Ask them to spread and if they say I'll do my best, you're better off spreading yourself. Getting tones of gravel out of the grass and out of ditches etc is frustrating. Let them dump in small piles down the drive and you can spread and grade from there. Asking the trucking company up front for a driver that can spread has been one that has been met with,"all we do is deliver and dump the pile where you want it" The old days of customer service are "gone".

I drive a dump truck and no I don't have 40 years of experience and I can't do what he just did in this video. I'm sure this man gets paid great but I don't get paid by the job. I get paid by the loads. I will spread rock if need be don't get me wrong but when you are an owner operator and have more then one place then you don't have time to take and be precise. As the next customer might not be as happy that you took so long to get there with the load they ordered. I literally was dropping and going for one customer as that's what he wanted. In order to get where he was I had to go into the busiest part of town for every run and he asked why I was late I said in a calmly manner, sir the way I have to go it's really busy with traffic, I get here as fast as I can. He said well I need them faster and he kept on and on so being an owner operator I said well you can take your quarter ton truck and go get the other 5 loads of 22 ton you need of rock. Have a nice day. He did apologized for being rude. I do this because a company I worked for told me that I was in charge of my truck, even though it wasn't my own, they told me if a customer gets rude with you or you don't feel comfortable with what they are requesting, decline the request and bring the load back to the query. I have never had to bring one back. Yet...

this is what happens when the client has money. they give them the good truck driver. regular people have to deal with the new guys. but yeah it's a good thing people have money so they can get the premium drivers

Good driver! I've not done much spreading like that. However, as a driver, it isn't my job to do yours, unless contracted to do so. As an equipment operator, more power to the driver. If you are going to do it, be good at it! As a driver that seldom has enough open overhead to do this, it's pretty impressive. A good driver can save you all kinds of time and money, a bad one can cost you plenty. Same can be said for equipment operators.

Practice makes perfect doesn’t mean every truck driver is a bum just mean some guys. I’ve been doing it longer sometimes.
