This is an excellent tutorial and really helped me. I just got my 2005 gs in April and was excited to get to modding. I bought a 2007 R6 or R6R shock just like in the video. The 2008 and 2009 R6R shock overall is physically smaller and you can slide it in from the side by removing the chain guard and the piece of metal jutting off the peg. It will also clear the swing arm when installed, so no need for any grinding. I installed the 2007 and grinded the swingarm just like in the video.
Just wanted to say thank you for this video. It was very helpful. FYI, I don't think you should have to grind the swingarm for clearance. Mine wanted to touch, but I just slid another block of wood under the rear wheel to get the swinger up a little more. That gave me the room to install the shock, bolts, etc. Nothing touches once the bike is back on the ground.
I just swapped in an 08 r6 rear shock into my gs500e last night after watching this video. The shocks are identical length and I was lucky enough to not have to grind. There is a couple of mm of room and it opens up as suspension compresses. Thanks for the great video ( I know it's been up a couple of years now)
mark ward Significantly better. If you only weigh around 120lbs it's probably not worth doing but for me around 180 plus gear it's great. I suggest doing a front spring upgrade first if you haven't yet as I saw more improvement out of that.
@@TheDanbulance Zombie thread, but did you use linear or progressive front springs for the front upgrade. I weigh 210 & I definitely need to work on my bike's suspension.
Thanks mate no worries. Yep got the shock off eBay. Prices have rocketed a bit since I did my conversion wait till the US winter before hunting when no one there buys parts.
Yes it will. You may even get away with not having to nip tuck the swing arm. It gave me a much more stable rear end and the compression and rebound give you real possibly to fine tune it to suit your riding.
@@tgiby9062 Not yet, but soon. I concentrated on other work on the bike. Tomorrow the wheels and tank will go to the painter for a fresh coat or two. I might do the shock while the rear wheel is off the bike. Thanks for reminding me. The late model R6 shock is waiting in my store room.
Seems like it would be much stiffer. I wonder what the sag figures are? If you have no idea what I am talking about do a search for Dave Moss. I would think it should be about 35mm for that bike for the street front and rear. If you cant achieve that much adjusting the spring tension, then the spring is too stiff.
Nice vid, my only problem is that I can't lift my fuel tank anywhere near as far as yours. I can't even see what's causing it to hang up, byt it feels like tubing ir wiring.
It will give you more adjustability over the stock rear shock. I wouldn't know what an r6 sits like, the shock is within 1 or 2mm of the stock shock so ride height stays the same
Hi. This has given me the confidence to try and do it. Will have to invest in a grinder just in case. Did you get your shock off ebay or is there a site in Aussie that sells them for a resonable price? I have the 2007/2008 GS500F. An excellent tutorial. Thanks from NZ
Just finished doing this to a 94 with an 10' r6 grey shock looks about the same as the red.....took the left side rider foot rest and chain guard off slide right thru the bottom also the middle! If anybody's looking for torque specs for the 5 bolts in play here: upper/lower shock bolt 29 to 43.5 lb ft the other three 50.5 to 72.5 lb ft.... haven't test driven it yet though...sitting on it, no bounce "no suspension all bike"
Also if you still having trouble sliding the shock thru the window ie no gas tank removal...with this video also checkout Sustitución del amortiguador de GS-500 por el de Yamaha R6R..I know in different language yet he uses a flathead to turn the bottom bracket of the shock to slide it thru the middle....ps what's good about this video is bearing repacking!
Glad to help. The clearence can depend on the shock year etc. I had to grind but if you can get away without it then good stuff. How do you find your handling with the new shock?
Mate I know it was a few years ago now. but what year gs did you have. I have an 05 and am considering either the r6 shock or the katana shock that regular dan did. either way what year was your GS500?
Hi, I bought the same R6 rear shock but for some reason the diameter of the bolt hole on the clevis is too big for the original bolt.. Did you have the same problem? Thanks Gerald
Without u looking back through the video I'm pretty sure I used the bolt that came with the shock. I did have to order it separate because the shock didn't come with it
Off the top of my head I can't remember hey but maybe it was an 08? Don't quote me but you must make sure you have a clevis on the bottom and an eyebolt in the top. For me I noticed no seat height change
Just wanted to say that after checking the price of one of these shocks on Bike Bandit ( $ 751.84 retail , $ 567.30 Bike Bandit price ) , I feel really, really great having paid just $ 84.00 for a 2006 R6 shock on Ebay that is immaculate and had the bolts and collar that I needed already on the shock. Amazing that they sell these for that kind of price on Ebay, but shhhh, don't tell 'em or they might jack 'em up, LOL !!!! I haven't installed it yet, so I will comment again when installed and I have a chance to ride it. Hopefully, the pogo stick action of the stock shock will be history.

+Tweaked86 how much better was the ride?

@@dumptrump3788 If I remember right they were linear springs. I no longer have the bike. Got them from a website called Sonic Springs.

Hey mate, long shot, but would you have the part numbers for the bolt and coller that you used to connect to the shock?
Cheers
I know this is so old but i just did the conversion and im wondering wer you had the preload set and all the other settings
Thanks for the video. I'm intending to do the same mod on my custom GS500F and this video will help me.
you ever do it?

So the point of this is adjustability and firmer suspension? Simple mod, nice.
Yes it will. Just make sure you have an eyebolt up top and a clevis at the bottom, NOT eyebolt at both ends.

very informative video thank you
Must have been that carton of beer we drank lol.
Well I bought an 07 shock, grinded the swing arm apparently far enough to make a hole through the other side and the shock still won't clear it

It was 03 (k3) but it'll all fit the same
Great vid!! Very helpful!
He mate, i want to put a 2001 r6 shock on my gs500e from 1993. Is this possible? Thank you
why not remove the rear wheel and go in that way?
mate was wondering if you could fit a k&n lunchbox filter instead of the air box?
You can but you would need to reject the carbs
easily enough done right? also how much did that shock set you back?
ummmmmm I did this a couple years ago now and the exchange rate was really good think all said n done it was 80 or 120 bucks shipped to Au

Gstwin.com
Stated you have to use the r6 hardware (bolt, sleeve, nut) for the bottom mount
Will the r1 shock work on my 2006 gs500f as well, if so what year did that ri shock come off..?
Mike Ojeda Sr. I don't think the r1 shock will work. My shock came off an 07 from memory it was a while ago
what year is the shocks from? how did it affect the seat height?..thanks and more power to your channel

what will this do to the bike? Will it make it sit up like an r6?
What about 08 cbr600rr on 06 gs500
Will this work on my '89 gs500e? How much of a ride difference is it from stock to r6 swap?
Do you know how many inches the 2006-2007 R6 is eye to eye? Thanks
No sorry but it's very close to the stock gs shock

No worries mate glad you found a bargin
Does this rise the bike height
Would it work with a 2008 r6 rear shock?!?!
To be honest dunno, just enough so the swing arm clears.
Only problem is it's still a gs
Correction was a gs lol.
