Mackie SRM150 powered loudspeaker review and user guide

  • A review of the smallest member of the Mackie Sound Reinforcement Monitor series, the SRM150. Despite having only a single 5.25" cone loudspeaker, this unit manages to sound surprisingly good, even at relatively high volume levels.
    Review includes demonstrations with an SM58 vocal microphone as well as with my Takamine TSF48c acoustic guitar.
    Part of this video focuses on inconsistencies and 'creative' aspects of Mackie's specification sheets. The company has long been known for flowery language and hyperbole in its marketing materials, so let's see just how accurate their specs are.

      @@GLBProductions Actually, I have used them (2) in a "Nursing Home", living room environment. I recall setting up a keyboard in front of a fireplace with a wheelchair/sofa audience of about 20 people. Placement is important. If they're too loud your vocal mic will pick up the monitor and add "mud" to your FOH system. The best placement is on a mic stand, in front of you, pointing back at you.

    I use a pair of these powered speakers with a mixer for small venues with great results.
    Also, as far as the speaker mounted on a stand facing upwards helps to avoid going straight into your audience's ears with any possible excessive volume.
    Bottom line: they work great.
    Thanks for the excellent review...!!

    I recently purchased the Mackie SRM 150. This is an excellent personal monitor for keyboard. I have a mic input on my keyboard so this is also my vocal monitor as well. My keyboard has speakers that are rated at 30W, which is good, but needed just a bit more and this did the trick. I actually have it set at the 9 to 10 o'clock position, 12 o'clock is a little to much. It is a little punchy in that it doesn't have a lot of bass, but I have a 10 powered sub woofer added that I got from an old surround sound system. It adds the extra bass I'm looking for. I did try the mic stand set up but it is extremely wobbly! I do not recommend this set up. I use a separate mic stand and have it centered above the music stand as opposed to having it on the left or right so I can hear it from both ears about the same. I highly recommend this as a personal monitor, just plan on getting a separate mic stand for it.

    • @markhourigan7795
      @markhourigan7795 7 років тому +1

      I used a headphone amp to add the sub woofer. Behringer Microamp Ha400 Ultra-Compact 4-Channel Stereo Headphone Amplifier is the one I got on Amazon for about $25. I use one channel for the Mackie SRM 150, one channel for the sub woofer, and I have the other two available for headphones if I need them. This allows you to adjust the level sent to the sub woofer and the level sent to the Mackie SRM 150. When I increase the volume from my keyboard, it also increases the volume to the Sub and SRM 150. Hope this helps.

    Nice thorough review of a great little compact monitor. I have used one for 6 years as a personal monitor with a live band, small PA for indoor meetings, personal monitor for acoustic guitar/coffeehouse gigs, and in a pinch, an on stage mixer for mic'd electric guitar and acoustic guitar mixed in the SRM 150 and sent line level to the house system as one guitar channel. It is a little workhorse and if used within it's design envelope will probably last forever. Cheers!

    is it normal to hear a very little HUM when nothing is plugged into it? is it because it is a class D amp?

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  6 років тому +1

      No you should not hear anything - if the unit is humming there is likely some issue with your A/C power supply. Class D amps do not generate more or less noise than other amp classes per se, they just have a different way of managing the incoming power :)

    Nice sounding monitor. One question. Can you turn it upside down and mount to a microphone stand to retain the horizontal orientation of the sound coming out instead of it being angled?

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  5 років тому +1

      You could try but you would probably damage the threads in the top before long. Plus all your controls would be upside down - not recommended!

  • @peterbrown619
    @peterbrown619 8 років тому

    I've used the SRM 150 with a microphone boom on top and it was not easy to secure it. The weight of the mic on an arm acted like a lever and swung so undoing the threaded extension on top of the unit. I have had larger lock nuts made to try and overcome this problem but it needs to be tested before you go live.
    Now my question!
    I use the srm150 as a monitor but want to daisy chain the feed to a further two passive speakers for other band members. I have some JVC 4ohm 20watt speakers from an old stero unit. Is it possible to use these?
    Liked your detailed presentation.....good work.

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  8 років тому +1

      +Peter Brown Yes, I was rather dubious about that setup myself! Much easier to use a separate mic stand for the SRM150 - speeds up setup time too.
      The output of the SRM150 is line level, not speaker level, so you would need to use an amplifier for the passive speakers, it's not possible to power them directly from the SRM150.

    Thank you Bruno for the wonderful review! I have one question and if you have a moment to answer that'd be much appreciated! I have a Mackie mixer with only 2 x Mon send which are shared among the musicians but I would need an extra monitor for the Singer and I was considering to buy the SRM 150 as a personal monitor for her. If I connect the microphone to channel 2 and then use the thru output of the SRM 150 to feed one channel of the main mixer, would this work without affecting the FOH band mixing? Also, would I be able to add vocal efx from the mixer? Thank you in advance for your attention. Best wishes.

    • @GLBProductions
      @GLBProductions  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching 😊 Yes you can do this but bear in mind that it would become a stand alone monitor with just her voice in it. You would not be able to add any additional reverb from the mixer.

    I am looking for product this year for an audio upgrade at my church, oh, hi again Bruno, and I like this review (well I like all of your reviews, I'm such a novice). My question is about mounting this on a mic stand, does it do well with fold up portable stands or is the heavy round base stands more stable with this speaker due to its weight?

      Dennis Neuhaus Hello Dennis :) I've used the SRM150 with both types of mic stands and had good results in both cases. Just make sure you use a quality stand from a company like K&M. John Collins Thanks for the info. When you say you connect the second SRM150 to 'the monitor' is that the first SRM150? So you have three SRM150s daisy chained together? What input and output connectors are you using, and does it occur regardless of what order you have them in?

The reason I wanted to use it as small feedback monitor as playing small venues with amp in front of myself 2 guitarists + vocalist would give us much more clarity in hearing ourselves as the noise from the front ie audience can effect what we hear from amp. Great and very complete review.
    I have tried one of them recently along with a 250 watt floor monitor . Because the Mackie SRM150 is nearer the vocalist it is very easy to hear. The floor monitor with their 12 inch speaker offer a richer tone but the sound is somewhat lost over the entire stage and more difficult to hear over the band's sound. I will be using a combination of floor monitors across the stage and some mackie SMR 150 for the vocalists and drummer.
    Merci beaucoup.
    Thanks

      robled555 Je vous en prie! Yes, with live sound it's important to get the monitor as close as possible to the performer, especially in the case of vocals. You can also try sidefill monitors, which I prefer because they get the speakers up off the floor and at ear level. See what works best for your situation and volume level.

    A peak light would be good.

      PhotoMusicMan Agreed, plus some form of signal present indicator or even a simple meter. No doubt Mackie have their reasons for leaving it off.

      GLB Productions Do you think only having a 3 band EQ would make this quite awkward to use as a vocal monitor?

      PhotoMusicMan Depends on the situation, what vocal mic you are using and how loud you need it to go :) It's not as good as having a 4-band parametric, for sure! The unit is quite well-voiced and I have found that I can get a surprising amount of level out of it.

      GLB Productions Off topic, but have you seen the QSC Touchmix? It looks amazing but you have to use the internal effects and can't use external reverbs. I doubt they would measure up to the SI Compact effects. Just wondered if you have any thoughts. It is light and would save me taking out a whole case of effects. My poor back these days!

      PhotoMusicMan Yes I have. The only issue with that mixer, which it share with other entry level digital mixers, is that it has physical gain controls, which means that you cannot have full 100% remote control of the mixer. Also I don't like mixing on a touchscreen, I like a mixer to have physical faders. Of course, all of these add weight and bulk, so you need to be aware of your priorities.

    Mine gets used for voice, inside, outside, covers one heck of a big area of audience easily, but for guitar, the SRM 150 is pretty useless, just mushes up, even with careful EQ adjustment.
    I like it mounted on the mic stand as a monitor in the band. I have a special bracket which isolates speaker vibration from the mic stand, avoiding feedback. Great.
    As a PA, my Lunchbox acoustic leaves this one way behind for both guitar and vocals.
    Mackie is very good all the same & always does a "pretty good job with most sound applications.
