Fantastic idea, the visual outcome is totally the best way for me to remember what tension I need. I'd also do this with different weights of fabrics just to see what they require at a glance.
What great information! Unfortunately I may have to watch the last part again as I was somewhat distracted by your adorable kitten, especially when she was peaking through from behind the machine :)
Thank you so so much. I have been fighting with my serger for 2 weeks since I got it. I was ready to completely give up on it and return it. I haven't been able to get my tension right. You just made a light go on in my mind. I have watched so many videos, and I just couldn't even get my head around it at all I am going to come home from work tomorrow and do this you are the only person to be able to explain this so I understood it thank you so much ❤️ 💗
Thank you so much for this. I have not used my serger yet (about 2 years) because I am a bit scared, but this video is so helpful. I shall try this method.
I purchased a serger recently and it is still unopened in the Box. I don't know why I thought I needed one, but I have one just the same. Your videos are very thorough, informative, and not full of extra things we don't need. Much appreciated. I might just open that box after all and take some of your advice.
This is hugely helpful, thank you! I bought my overlocker a few months ago and used it a bit, but have had a hard time figuring out the settings. This is great!
I seem to be having an issue with my fabric rippling, like I have to sort of gentle redistribute the stitches once I finish and I have absolutely no idea what tutorial to look for - I don't suppose you have anything?
The stitches are showing a lot on the right side of the fabric when I open out the seams so I'm going to use this method to get the tension right and hopefully solve the problem. Great tutorial.
I love your teaching channel. I have a PFAFF Creative 1475 CD sewing machine that will not come on without trying several times. Do you have a suggestion, I would like to keep this machine. Thank you for any advice you might offer. Shirley I have a
Great idea. Other test needed is with knit too. Maybe it could be done with a coverstitch too? Im more struggling with that one using different knit weights...
Wow!!!! Such great help. Thank you!!!! I have a different serger, therefore, should I start testing on my serger with all number 3 across the UL,LL, RN,LN? Thank you for your video. I can now read the stitches and I will start the same test on my machine only need to know if I should start all tension on 3. Thank you, thank you!
This is a great video to help me re-establish a relationship with my singer s0100. I can’t get my machine to work with a right hand needle only. But it works fine with a left hand needle only. More fiddling around to be done. I guess this tension sample should be done with every new fabric that I work with? Or is this just a way of working out what thread goes where and what tension disc to adjust? Either way, it is a great tutorial. Thank you for posting it.
The needle may not be fully inserted? It may be blunt or the wrong type. But otherwise, yes. The idea is to understand your tension dials better and what they do, when you do, when you work with other fabrics, you could repeat the exercise, but soon enough you’ll start to see where you need to adjust the machine, and it’ll become second nature, you’ll do it without too much thought.
@@AbisDen I tried that, perhaps there is some debris in the receiving part. Either way, I have new needles on order too. This is the third overlocker/serger I have owned. They are a trial if you don’t sew often enough to keep skills fresh. But thankfully your videos have helped me understand how to problem solve, not just you, but also the comments from fellow commentators.
What a good idea! I suppose it would be different with different fabric so, it is a good idea if using a fabric I haven't sewn with before to test in this way? Or, would the tension be pretty much the same?
With every new fabric I’d always start with the default tension and go from there. I’m still a relative newbie after using my machine for just over a year and still struggle to work it all out sometimes even though I’ve been sewing for 37 years and even checking the books I have leaves me scratching my head sometimes, practice makes progress!
Please help me figure this out ❓🤔 My upper and lower looper thread does not stay on the top edges It dips down and back up about every 5 stitches 🤦🏻♀️
I test every fabric I sew or serge on the machine I’ll use to check the needles, thread, tension and pressure are correct. I don’t always make a tension chart. This is useful for everyone to make to learn about how each tension affects the stitch x
Hey Ariel, the point is, you make your own for your machine - every machine is different so making a tension chart will help you figure out the settings for your machine x
Hi Abi. This is fantastic , but I do the same for a coverstitch machine which I’d driving me crazy as I sew only a few incites and the threads break mainly the needles. Can this sister be use for that mach8ne as well, and if so can you make a vid about the coverstitch ?
@@AbisDen thanks Abi, I wasn’t sure that my message made sense but really looking forward to the video with the same help but forthe coverstitch can’t wait thank you
Hi, I am new to overlocking, and I only have white thread that came with my Brother 3043DWT machine. I would like to try this tension chart but not sure what brand of thread to purchase for my overlocker. Any suggestions would be helpful please. Amazon for example sell a thread for serging, embroidery and quilting by Ilauke which is a polyester thread. Would this be suitable as I can get 12 colours in a set. Thank you.
Hi Natasha. Welcome to the world of overlocking, I’m happy with moon thread from coats but I’ve just discovered New Brothread, it’s got a lovely feel to it. I don’t usually buy cones but these are lovely. Video coming soon x I’ve not heard of ilauke but give it a try x
Thanks for this video am grateful but i just don't understand why my right needle thread keeps cutting while serging 😭 except only when I use 3 three with left needle
Hi Abie. Is the tension of 3 just for this test and all models or is this the preset tension for your make of machine. I’m having issues on a fleece material. I have my differential set to 2 which is the best to stop in stretching and wavering. First 2 - 3 inches looks perfect and then I start to get upper looper V’s randomly and then it goes curved and the left needle stitches skip. Any ideas why this is. I’m a bit of a novice and can never get it right on this machine except for cottons.
Hey! That sounds frustrating. Have a look at the needles. Some fleece needs stretch needles others do better with ballpoint. I’ve just released a new video on cleaning your machine. Take a look at that too. Good luck 🤞🏼
Miss abbi I have a question I am having problem with the knives both upper and lower blade when trying to stitch the upper blade pulls all the way up and you hear a click and then hits the lower blade....is this a timing issue
Oh this is fantastic! That‘s what I need to do with my fiercely bitchy Coverlock machine!!!!! This expensive beast has a quite challenging learning curve….
I taught many people who took a long time to understand. I tried lots of different ways to help them. One lady took three years before I saw the penny drop, her face lit up with a difference. Keep at it. Is it the tension that’s messing up? Sometimes the slots are too big and you have to take care and check thread slid between the discs.

Your machine comes preset at 3 or 4. For example, Janome, singer and Kenmore preset tension settings at 3 and brother at 4.
Thank you Abi

Thank you so much for your videos!
How does the findings/settings change when using a different fabric like a single layer of chiffon?
Changing needles and knife adjustment for lighter weight, one less needle for lighter weight.
Please help me figure this out ❓🤔
My upper and lower looper thread does not stay on the top edges
It dips down and back up about every 5 stitches 🤦🏻♀️
Sounds like the thread has popped out of your tension discs ☺️
Do you do samples like this at the beginning of each sewing project to get the correct tension for the fabric you are using?
I test every fabric I sew or serge on the machine I’ll use to check the needles, thread, tension and pressure are correct. I don’t always make a tension chart. This is useful for everyone to make to learn about how each tension affects the stitch x
