  • Rima Curry is still reeling over the death of her beloved husband, Steve. The 71-year-old retired electrician succumbed to the searing 120-degree heat while hiking in Death Valley. He was an avid outdoorsman who would disappear for days on end to explore national parks near his home. Death Valley was on his bucket list. It comes as two women also died while hiking in hot weather in Nevada's Valley of Fire State Park.

As someone who lived in Arizona, after that temp goes beyond 110 you just don't feel it anymore and that's what causes people to mistakenly think it's not going to get any hotter, but by the time it goes up a few more degrees your body is already dying and you just don't know it. Best time to hike is 5-8 am then 7-10 pm. Don't go alone and never forget to take water and some kind of shade. Even if it's just an umbrella.

if i may add to the conversation, I remember hiking to the Rainbow Bridge in UT, and while it was not as hot as 100, the hike was too long for 1 day, so I CAREFULLY PLANNED. Didnt carry much food, just trail mix, beef jerky (big mistake), some other food, and most of the weight in pack was water. I dont think I even carried more than a gallon goin in. I look back on that hike especially since it was a 2 day solo hike, which can be much for some. Barely saw anyone on the trail going in, probably just saw 1 Park ranger, and I knew all I had was me. Long story short, slept alone under the Rainbow Bridge (hella creepy, kept feeling like someone was gunna rob or jump me while I slept alone in this canyon), and basically had to plan to hike just after noon and not too far in the evening. I had heat exhaustion which was crazy, I remember just collapsing into my car, but the trip back I kept having to push myself because even though the moon was beautiful, the desert is a deadly place. I was 24 and not even peak condition.

Who the hell in there right mind would go to death valley in that kind of heat??? No wonder he died. I remember when I was younger I was walked home after leaving work and I had a 5 mile walk home and it was over 90 degrees outside and I ended up collapseing on the side of the road and I wasn't even at the half way point yet. Luckily my aunt was driving down to see my mom at home and saw me collapsed on the side of the road and she picked me up and brought me home and it took several hours for me to regain consciousness. I am extremely sensitive to temperature changes and i can't be in tepms over 70 degrees for more then 10-15 mins cuz I get heat exhaustion and heat stroke very quickly. Anytime I leave my house on hot days I always have water with me and I have a plan of where I'm going, how long it will take to get there and I stop at every shady spot I come across on my path

My toddler and I went on a short mini hike up this trail by my house. it was only 75 degrees but it felt so hot! It felt like the sun was right above us the whole time. I kept dunking my son with water the whole way. I could never imagine going hiking in 100 degree weather. When you exercise your body gets hotter, so hiking in the heat makes your body overheat fast!

I work outdoors in Phoenix on the Broadway curve project in freeway construction and I'm in my mid-sixties. It's been between 112 to 120 degrees now for one month straight and hasn't gotten below 93° at night for 3-1/2 weeks!! Everybody out here is constantly watched over made to drink water and made to take short breaks in air conditioning. If you stay in the heat too long it comes to a point where your body cannot cool itself off anymore and that's what happened to that gentleman!! I feel really sorry for his wife because it was completely preventable & unnecessary! Also, it's not over yet because we still have August & September so be aware out there!!!!!

I grew up in a desert lake town, and we often had 110+ degree weather this time of year. I would walk in the morning to the beach, and back home around dusk. OTW to the beach, I would wear a hat, SPF, and bring plenty of water to walk the 3 mile journey. I'd always be wiped out by the time I got to the water, and I would still rest in some shade, or inside a store for a few minutes before moving on. I couldn't imagine hiking in the desert when it's over 105 without cooling stations and plenty of shade to rest under. And I'm also a very experienced hiker. But until October 1, I'll only hike in High Country.
And if you insist on hiking in the desert during the summer, you need to start ideally around 5am and be back no later than 10a. The earlier you get back, the better.

This is why you shouldn't do any outdoor activities in extreme heat. I would not even go outside beyond doing whatever I have to in order to get from point A to point B if it is above 90 degrees.
