Sad thing abt Martin Scorsese is that none his movies move me.Not a god damn one. I watched it today. The theater room was actually in the basement of the cinema, so when I walked out it had this weird similarity to the movie itself. Strange sensation to say the least.
I just saw Parasite...and I am in awe. This movie deserves an award beyond an Oscar. I thought subtitles would have hurt the movie, but it had me more invested.
Soft spoilers talking about visual stuff in the movie: Many talk about the vertical symbolism for class, but one youtuber (don’t remember the channel name) noticed that the characters not only talk about this ’line that shouldn’t be crossed’ there’s a VISIBLE line in the house architecture. The two most noticable moments that I remember is when the housemaid wakes the rich mom in the garden. The housemaid politely tries to rouse the mom a few times before taking a step forward and clapping her hands together, waking the mom. It’s filmed from inside the house and there’s two glass pannels connecting, creating a line between the housemaid and the mom. When the housemaid steps forwards and claps, she crosses the line. The second time is when the son talks to the rich girl at the garden party, asking her if he’d ever fit in. Again there’s a line in the glass between them, separating them and separating the classes. If I remember correctly, the line could be anything, a wall, a door, a line in the floor (just remembered), when the rich mom takes the main guy to her daughters room, there’s a line in the floor and the characters walk on different sides of it. It’s really stunning.
I have watched so many break down videos after watching the movie in the theater twice back in October. Each video has something new to say about the movie that I have not realized or considered. Amazing.
At the end of the film, when the father is walking toward the stairs from the backyard, he starts out by walking in the shadowed grass and then crosses the line into the sunlit part of the grass.
After this movie I got into Korean films starting with Kang Ho Song movies. He is the reason I started watching. Amazing actor and definitely one of the best I've ever seen!
I love 'Helpless' It's stars the same actor who played the rich husband in Parasite. Helpless is very very underated Korean film and it's based on a Japanese novel. I highly recommend you guys Helpless. Also 'Hope'(or Wish) another extremely underated one. Please try both, they're amazing.
People who wont read subtitles, i pity you. Such a visual movie, you could show someone whos seen it a cellphone, pizza box, cigarettes, knickers, a diary, peaches, a cake and a rock and they would know exactly what and whom you were talking about.
Ki-taek: She's rich, but still nice. Chung-sook: Not "rich, but still nice." She's nice because she's rich. Hell, if I had all this money. I'd be nice, too! This quote from the movie still etched in my brain to this day. This is the family drunk scene.
@@ariesgonzalezag You're right not being able to empathize with them. They're not good people. Good people wouldn't do what they did. But there are no good people in the movie, maybe except for that poor chauffeur that got framed for car sex. Chung Sook is not nice, because like she said 'if I were rich I could be nice'. She's poor, the whole family is poor. Therefore, they can't afford to be kind. The nastiness is ingrained in their being so they can survive.
As a Korean-American teen, I'm really glad to see Parasite do well in America and other countries as well. Thanks for a great spoiler free review !! (p.s. I'm a long time fan of your vids)
I can’t say that I “liked” it, it is more than that... I definitely think it is an amazing film and I am still meditating on it after two days since I watched it. It is like a sad song which touches your soul.

This movie is brilliant. It’s one of those movies which the more you think of it the more you want to watch it again. It reminds me of Shakespeare kinda.
Song Kang Ho OR Kang Ho Song, in English, is an amazing actor. He is always just the common man, which makes him more relatable than superhuman protagonists and sociopaths.
Korean names are placed such that last names (Song) come first when formally addressed, followed by their first name (Kang-Ho). In English it can really go either way

This is exactly why beyond doing great things for the people involved in the industry, why I think the Oscars help even if they are kind of a joke. People like Jeremy would probably never have watched the film had it not gotten that recognition. When more people give films, particularly foreign ones, a chance it just makes me really happy!
Most people in the world give "foreign films" a chance. In case you didn't know, almost the entire fucking world is "foreign". We're the ones who are giving your Hollywood trash a chance. And don't you forget it.
@@SpaceCattttt First off, no idea why you sound annoyed, since that wasn't what I was saying. My bad on not being clear because I mostly refer to Americans because that's where the majority of the most popular films come from as well as most of these youtubers are based. This extends to the UK too. Secondly, "my Hollywood"? Mate I'm not even American, I'm Rwandese lol. Technically saying foreign films is weird because American films would be foreign to me but I was sort of going by the category of The Oscars. I'm pretty sure beyond the countries they mostly come from, a lot of these films that are classified as foreign by the Oscars don't receive a lot of attention in other countries and continents. It isn't just Americans, here in East Africa for instance a lot more Kenyans were able to watch it because of all the awards and the cinemas deciding to show it. They heavily marketed it around the award recognition angle, which is obvious but they would never have shown it otherwise. Hollywood films reach a far wider audience worldwide because they are simply the most popular on average, I don't see why this would not be obvious?
@@Dushine What annoys me is the distinction people make between American films and foreign films. All films are foreign in most countries, yet American films are the only ones who are usually only referred to as "films" or "movies". In the rest of the world, people might say that they want to watch this "American film". But Americans always emphasize all non-American films as "foreign". And because the emphasis for them, is on those films being foreign, a lot of Americans will dismiss them for that reason alone. And that pisses me off. And what pisses me off even more is how a Rwandan person should defend this horse shit attitude, just because American films are the most popular globally. Does that automatically make American films the standard and all other films "foreign"? No, it doesn't. American films are foreign to you and me. And if Americans can make such a fuss about foreign films, then so can we about American films.
@@SpaceCattttt Ah I get you man, I'm not really defending it though? I'm simply saying that's how it is. I feel your pain and normally I refer to Parasite as a Korean film, both in conversation with someone but also online. It sounds weird to call it foreign so my bad if you thought I meant that's how I refer to them. I was merely speaking in terms of how Americans see it. I don't agree and if anything I prefer films outside of Hollywood, I have so for the past decade basically. I do agree a lot of Americans do kind of look down on films not from America and nothing shows this than the Oscars making a "best foreign film" category which is so dumb. As happy as I am that Parasite was seen by a lot more, it DOES bother me that it takes a movie that good having to basically sweep the Oscars for someone like Jeremy to see it. It tells you how much they aren't bothered but to each their own I guess. It just feels a bit hypocritical and all that. I simply use the word foreign because when dealing with people like in this case that are mostly American, it makes things a lot easier to say. A very good point about how Americans emphasize "foreign" as opposed to "Korean, Japanese" etc though, that's something that feels like you are holding yourself above other films from other countries.
0:45 You can offer your everyday person review, which is why I like to see your reviews... you are just one of us, not someone which is worried about cinematography, the lighting or quoting the directors name.
eh, I don't know who the "us" is. I mean, I'm curious about JJ's opinions (at times), but don't give much weight to them as to whether I'd like a movie or not. And JJ does quote director's names a lot. Like when he trashed Knives Out, he kept bringing up Rian Johnson. IIRC, he brought up RJ in the very first sentence, and kept mentioning him, and saying stuff like "Knives Out isn't as clever as Rian Johnson thinks it is ..." lol
I'm worried about cinematography and lighting, those are important parts of a movie. I still like to watch Jeremy. I've seen enough of his reviews to know how our tastes differ from each other.
Yeah it probably holds more weight if you save them for REALLY special films. I mean Age of Ultron and Kung Fu Panda 2 got Awesometaculars (great films but not life changing)
vane c It absolutely was. I haven’t seen 1917 yet, but I have seen Jojo Rabbit and Marriage Story and I’m still 100% confident in saying that Parasite and The Lighthouse were the two best films of last year.
@@BorrowedMemories On point. Be carefull..choose your words wisely about this movie. The fandom doesn't accept criticism. You may end up with a rock in the head or something :)
@@BorrowedMemories No, YOU can't do both. The average director can't to both. Bong Joon Ho can though and that's why this movie was the second best movie of the year, second only to The Lighthouse
Typical contrarian "Oh you enjoyed something that most other people enjoyed too? Must just easily buy into bullshit, unlike me, a genius" That wasn't the ending you moron. It was right in the middle of the film, if anything it was part of the setup for the ending. It also plays into the themes of the movie of how money and the struggle to move up in class will turn people against eachother
I find it fascinating how Jeremy only reviews foreign films when they reach a certain status. I get it, he is free to review any film he wants, but with all the "dogshit" films he's seen in the last year alone, he coul have watched a couple amazing foreign films and have a good time. Like c'mon man. There are other countries on the world, you know?
Aidawan Flennson I know right. I didn’t like the whole tone of this review too. His whole attitude and voice sounded sounded super blasé like “hell ill review because it’s got western recognition”.
So what do you do check out which country released which movies every single time and then spend hours deciding which one's are worth watching from every country??Gimme a break.
There are tons of people who don't like to watch movies with subtitles as it pulls them away from what's going onscreen. Subtitles aside the style of foreign movies can be too different for some as well. Lastly people like to watch actors they are fans of and you don't get that with foreign movies. Don't be looking down on people just because they like what they are used to.
Well, in general Americans or probably anybody, aren’t going to watch a foreign film unless they hear a lot of good things from their peers. I don’t watch foreign films in my own leisure time, unless I hear a lot of good things about it. I probably would’ve never saw Parasite if it wasn’t released or praised in America, just because good foreign movies are rarely talked about in America, since they don’t come out over here. There are a lot of American films out there and most, if not all American movies get more global distribution than foreign movies, so he’s going to review the more “global” movies. Most foreign films aren’t even accessible in America because they only release in their respective countries, so you can’t complain about him or other Americans for only seeing American films. His job is reviewing movies that come out in the American/global box office. He could review other foreign movies, but he’d be straying from his main demographic because not everyone cares about a lowkey foreign movie or a movie they have no way of seeing.
well part of Jeremy's job is that he has to review new releases to let people know whether or not they should check them out it's not like he's reviewing dog shit movies from 20 years ago just for the hell of it
Let's be honest he did a review just because Oscars hyped it, otherwise he wouldn't watch it. Chris Stuckmann reviewed Parasite months before the current hype.
Jeremy is my favourite YT movie reviewer... he’s just so laid back and really knows how to connect and talk to the casual fan while also going in depth for hardcore fans. Excellent work Mr.Jahns
Korean movies have a theme in them no other movies can portray. Mother, parasite, memories of murder, burning, poetry, the day after, alone in the beach at night, oldboy, and peppermint candy are just a few of great korean movies. Watch these and you will not understand how korean film just got the spotlight. For years, amazing korean directors made fantastic films and never really got the credit for it worldwide. Thankgod atleast now, people will watch more of the korean art films.
I agree! I’ve been in love with Korean movies and directors and actors since I saw my first South Korean movie about a girl who thinks she is a Cyborg! I taught myself how to read Hangul too after being in awe of Korean storytelling

I respect Jeremy giving this movie Buy it on Blue-ray. He could have easily giving it Awesometacular just to follow the trend but he liked the movie a whole hell of alot, and was honest. Korean fan here Jeremy, thanks for giving it a chance!
So happy that this movie is getting the recognition it deserves! As long as people can get over the fact that subtitles exist then they’re most likely going to love it!
I watch a lot of Korean dramas/movies/shows. All of them with English subtitles on. Let me just say, a few years on and I am now able to under the Korean language. (I haven't attended a single class for it.) Subtitles are amazing. They tell you the meaning of the word being said immediately. Plus together with the actions, they show you the context and situation in which the word can be used. That 1 inch isn't a barrier. It's something that has helped open up my world.
It didn't get Awesometacular. The highest it could've gotten in his list would be #5 because Fighting with My Family (#4) was Awesometacular, but I think he wasn't that passionate with the film.
It finally came to my local cinema after winning the Oscars. Treated myself to it for V day. I was not prepared for how funny it was! But I left the theater a little perplexed by the ending, but stopped midway down the hallway as I left and had an "aha" moment. Haven't stopped thinking about it ever since. Definitely seeing it again.
Usually I find subtitles annoying. But I feel like the subtitles just kind of worked in this film. I don’t know how to explain it but I just think everything just fitted together like a puzzle. One of the best films I have ever seen in my life. Saw it yesterday, absolute work of genius.
This movie is extremely special... can’t explain it but it just keeps getting better after every view... Bong and his team really made something incredible 💯.

Parasite has the depth of a Shakespearean tragedy, with dark but witty undertones that shows how badly we dehumanize the poor to the point of thinking they cannot do wrong.
Everyone's talking about the poor dad and the poor daughter's performances, but did anybody else love the rich mom? She was so hapless and daft, yet so believable. Also does anybody know why she was unconscious on the table when she was first introduced? I was expecting the movie to eventually explain that but I don't know if it actually did.
Alcohol more likely. The amount of alcohol in her house and the amount she buys at the end for a kids birthday party lol. Probably she was buying it for herself instead
Great review. I watched Parasite for the first time today and knew nothing about it. Wow.....what a movie. There is so much to absorb after seeing it. I think you absolutely have to watch it again just to get to grips with the story. The acting and cinematography are brilliant. Soft spoilers talking about visual stuff in the movie:
Many talk about the vertical symbolism for class, but one youtuber (don’t remember the channel name) noticed that the characters not only talk about this ’line that shouldn’t be crossed’ there’s a VISIBLE line in the house architecture.
Accented Cimema is the youtuber i saw, who talked about the things you wrote here, I'm not sure if that's the youtuber you meant?
I have watched so many break down videos after watching the movie in the theater twice back in October. Each video has something new to say about the movie that I have not realized or considered. Amazing.
At the end of the film, when the father is walking toward the stairs from the backyard, he starts out by walking in the shadowed grass and then crosses the line into the sunlit part of the grass.

Exactly. Increasing exposure is pretty much all the Oscars are good for.
Hollywood: You can make a deep thought provoking movie or an entertaining movie. Not both.
Parasite: Hold my beer.
Hold my plum juice

Finally Jeremy, you reviewed it! It's never too late. You're great at it, even if there are other reviewers out there, we like to hear from YOU!
He could review other foreign movies, but he’d be straying from his main demographic because not everyone cares about a lowkey foreign movie or a movie they have no way of seeing.
well part of Jeremy's job is that he has to review new releases to let people know whether or not they should check them out

This movie is extremely special... can’t explain it but it just keeps getting better after every view... Bong and his team really made something incredible 💯.

Nothing will ever warm my heart more than seeing Bong Joon Ho smiling at his Oscar in the background when he won
Parasite has the depth of a Shakespearean tragedy, with dark but witty undertones that shows how badly we dehumanize the poor to the point of thinking they cannot do wrong.
Parasite is so good it created a new Jeremy Jahns rating.
“Worth buying on BluRay?” nah
“Awesometacular?” nah
“Worth awarding to the Oscars?” 😏👌
Thank you Jeremy for your personal reflections regarding Parasite. To me, this was an “Awespectacular” review! Keep it up, man! 💥👍💥👍💥
0:25 I don't care about the Oscars, I care about Jeremy's Opinion. That's why I am here.
I was here 6 years ago and I will be here 60 years later.
I think she was just so exhausted with dealing with the son.
Drugs maybe
Alcohol more likely. The amount of alcohol in her house and the amount she buys at the end for a kids birthday party lol. Probably she was buying it for herself instead
Great review. I watched Parasite for the first time today and knew nothing about it. Wow.....what a movie. There is so much to absorb after seeing it. I think you absolutely have to watch it again just to get to grips with the story. The acting and cinematography are brilliant. Besides my all time favourite foreign language movie (cinema paradiso) I aqm struggling to think of another movie that is this good. It deserves the awards it has recieved.
You're late to the party, but I'm glad you liked it. One of my faves in 2019.
On a bus ride home watching recommended videos about parasite and right as I finished it I see you uploaded this lol
Hey Jeremy, I really enjoy your contents! Are you going to review "Train to Busan"? It's another Korean movie on Netflix. I want to know what you think of it.
So, this movie had to win 4 Oscars to Jeremy watch it. Priorities, I guess...
He is so fake.. "movie person" = someone who watches the Oscars
was thinking the same... plus the review was just “you’ve to see it! it won oscars! go see it! yay! it won it won it won thats why go see it!”
@@saugatkarki3169 Sure that's the way you feel about movies you see twice in the movie theater. I bet he didn't want to make this review feel redundant.
@@saugatkarki3169 didnt seem so in his review. Gave a quick synopsis and premise.
When a foreign movie(of which you don't normally watch gets alot of praises and wins 4 Oscars) of course you'd have to see it for yourself
I liked the part where when the whole family gets over their differences and finally unites to kill the parasite for good!
sabi6684 Plot twist
Which movie?
and then the parasite finds its way up the dude pooter and he infects everyone. insane.
the real parasite was friends we made along the way
