I like both versions of him. He was always a great leader and overall character in the past adaptations, but ROTTMNT Leo’s personality change is actually quite refreshing.

I prefer the new one because the relationships between the brothers are much healthier than the 2012 adaptation, and I loved 2012 so much. But this show, the fights, the continuity, the wholesomeness, it’s all so perfect, like a fresh new canvas of family misadventures.

Because of both that, and Splinter's hands-off approach being probably a mix of ptsd, depression and wanting the boys to have a stress free life, Raph became the responsible one. For this team, learning ninjutsu and martial arts is more of a hobby to emulate their favourite action star. As a result, they don't have the same level of dedication. Especially because, until the first episode, their lives were relatively calm to the point April had been in their lives for at least 3 years and no one in New York is paying enough attention to care. In summary, the team is a little more lax than previous incarnations and Raphael has to sometimes play the part of scary older brother. Leo is still a great tactician but, because he never had to shoulder the responsibility and his dad wasn't recognising the potential he had (because this Leo acts smug to hid an inferiority complex that rivals Donnie's), he's never needed to be the responsible one. Then again, being the leader in this version is more about making sure everyone takes part in missions so its more being the Team Dad.

Rotmnt is nowhere as good as the 2012 one but gosh the designs and the animation are really nice, and it's really funny too
