    This series of videos aims to fill a gap: to tell you which devices are capable to create a podcast with 1-2-3…-8 people present and 1, 2, 3 or even 4 people interviewed over the phone or a VoIP solution like Skype or Zoom.
    This is the 3rd video of the series, which explains some basics that you need to conduct phone interviews: what is „mix-minus“ (which makes sure that the podcasts guests on the phone hear you but they don’t hear a feedback of their voice as an echo while speaking) - and how to set it up using the BEHRINGER FLOW 8 bluetooth-controlled digital mixer (229€!!!)

    Great video! Did you make the follow up guide for multiple mix minus on the Flow 8 yet?

    • @PodcastMeister
      @PodcastMeister  2 роки тому +1

      Hi, thanks! I didn‘t make a follow-up guide yet as even with the firmware update there‘s no USB mix-minus (to my knowledge), so the second mix-minus has to be set up just like the first, using the monitor mixes (of which there are 2) an additional iRig2 and phone. But let me know your specific situation, I may be able to help.

    4:30 Why do you prefer the iRig 2 over a simple Y-cable which splits the signals from a TRRS connector into separate phones and mic connectors? Most smartphones' headphone outputs will easily drive most prosumer line inputs. Network calls (and even VoIP calls) are compressed and band-limited as it is so there's no real danger of losing quality to impedance mismatches. Similarly, a happy impedance/level balance can be struck for the signal returning from mixer back to the phone.

    • @PodcastMeister
      @PodcastMeister  3 роки тому

      Thanks for the question. The issue is not really the signal that‘s going out from the phone into the mixer, but the line level output that comes from the mixer - that is in my experience way too hot for the smartphone. The iRig2 helps to attenuate that line level signal and it also has a gain knob on the side that helps you fine tune the level.

    • @PodcastMeister
      @PodcastMeister  3 роки тому

      Btw, the TRRS-splitter cable setup works well with ie the Zoom H5 and H6. But that is such a cumbersome setup that I would not actually recommend to use it for phone interview recordings (you can find a sample drawing of that on the link in the description amongst the other setups)

      Happy that it helped. This little wonder is pretty much your cheapest and most straightforward option for that. The Zoom Livetrak L-8 could do it as well for about 150€ more, and of course the Zoom Podtrak P8 and the Rode Rodecaster Pro - but they are way more expensive. Good luck with the setup!

    • @PodcastMeister
      @PodcastMeister  3 роки тому +1

      On second thought, you can also try it with the Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 3rd Gen. That‘s even below 200€ and has a built-in software loopback which you can set up for Teams. (I have a similar video for it)

      @@PodcastMeister I watched all your super informative videos. 👍 thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I’m not convinced by the rodecaster and podtrack because they don’t have xlr/phono combo jacks. In the end I was looking at the livetrack l-8 and scarlet 8i6 as per your recommendation. One has physical knobs and sliders, the other one cheaper and more compact I was leaning towards the livetrack. But it seems one can only turn on phantom for all mics at the same time, not individually, which seems to be not a good idea. So focusrite might be the right choice. I wish the flow 8 was available one size larger so I don’t have to upgrade in case our production grows a little.

    • @PodcastMeister
      @PodcastMeister  3 роки тому

      @@BenjaminWeinlichYT if growth is a main concern, then the 8i6 is fairly limited in that it has only 2 mic inputs. I would not worry about phantom power much - as long as you don‘t use mics that are more than 20-30 years old or ribbon mics, phantom power will not do much harm. If you‘d be using fethead or cloudlifter preamps they would need it anyway. The L-8 is probably the best choice then. Its only downside is that it does not have a built-in USB mix-minus, but it makes up for it with its 3 monitor mixes and the trrs-phone-mix-minus. Just my 2 cents.

    Hi Awesome Video! Very informative.
    What i'd like to ask is whether this is useable in a live situation.
    For Example, I perform with backing tracks and a click track. Is the headphone mix separate from the main outs where I can dial in a monitor mix for myself on the phones out and output a unique mix without the click track to some PA speakers from the Main outs? Is that possible with this?

    • @PodcastMeister
      @PodcastMeister  3 роки тому +1

      Hi, thanks for the comment! The headphone mix is the same as the main outs, but you can happily use the monitor mix for your headphones instead. So I would simply leave the headphone out port empty and plug in the headphones into i.e. Monitor out 1 instead and then mute the click track from the main mix (but leave it turned up for Mon1). I hope it helps, let me know if it worked for you!

    • @Dinhew
      @Dinhew 3 роки тому

      @@PodcastMeister awesome that's great! One more question. Are the monitor mixes 1 & 2 mono or stereo? Or do I need and adapter to plug into both and output stereo?

    • @PodcastMeister
      @PodcastMeister  3 роки тому +1

      Hi, in the specs they say it‘s a „1/4 inch TRS“ jack“ but it also „accepts cables with 1/4 inch TS connectors“. I‘m assuming they are mono, as with the headphone port they specifically mention that that one is stereo. In any case, in my understanding, you can simply plug in your headphones into one of them and you‘ll hear it in both ears. I haven‘t tested it though., but it should work.

    very informative video! thanks! I do have a question, are there any alternative to irig 2? will the irig pro or the tc helicon go guitar pro work with this mix minus set up? how about the orginal irig (the tube one) will it work as well?

    • @PodcastMeister
      @PodcastMeister  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks! I haven't tested the iRig Pro or the TC Helicon Go Guitar Pro, however, the iRig Pro does not have an amplifier output, so even if it works, it's more difficult to connect it back to the mixer (you need to come out from the headphone port and into a stereo channel in the mixer with a 3.5mm to dual 6.3mm cable) - and it's 3x the price of an iRig2. The iRig HD2 can do the same and that in arguably better quality, but it's 2x the price. The TC Helikon Go Guitar Pro also seems to be able to do the same - but again, it's double the price. I do have the original tube iRig and I could not make it work for mix-minus.

    • @raisinyao
      @raisinyao 2 роки тому

      @@PodcastMeister Thank you for your reply! Yeah original tube irig doesn't work I can hear the caller but the caller can't hear me back and I don't know why but a split cable I think works with this set up and original irig doesn't? anyway It's very hard to find irig 2 here in The Philippines and I think it will be obsolete and local resellers won't reorder stocks so I have no choice but to gamble and purchase TC Helicon Go Guitar Pro; however, I don't know how and if it will connect and work with my phone since I'm android user and most of these small interfaces are more ios friendly than android.

    • @PodcastMeister
      @PodcastMeister  2 роки тому +1

      Hi, from what I remember, layers are the different choices of what the faders control: the main mix, the monitor mix(es) or the FX mixs. „Layers follow“ will simply make the app follow what your device is controlling at a certain moment. (ie you press Mon 1 on the mixer, then the app will also follow and the app faders will control the Monitor 1 output).
