In the film Mildred Pierce, Joan played a genuinely good, caring, supportive mother, and it was Mildred's daughter Veda who did all the abuse as an archetypal incarnation of the spoiled brat "ungrateful child."

In real life, per Joan's own confession to Bette Davis as dramatized in the tv drama Feud, Joan was a "Veda" to her own mother: at an even younger, shocking age 11 seduced her stepfather into a long sexual relationship.

Fame alone does not bring happiness; it can be a liability, not asset, unless one is an attention junkie. To viewers of CC's tv appearances, as her regular role on The Secret Storm and later guest roles on well watched nighttime series, she was well known. And on her appearance with Joan on a 1968 Jerry Lewis Telethon where Joan promptly grabbed her hand and yanked her offstage, likely it was as at age 28 Christina in glam attire and coif and dazzling smile looked gorgeous, and towered over Joan. The Queen Bee could not have it. Yet CC stayed a good sport for that occasion.

But I really don’t t understand people that have never met Joan Crawford curse Christina for being a “vicious liar.” How in the world would you know? Just what makes it so hard to believe? I grew up in a home with abusive parents that were horrible behind the scenes. I had a sibling that was a particular focus of the mean and awful treatment. I believe Christina Crawford. She was adopted which is already trauma as it is a legal form of human trafficking. I mean she was purchased after all. And her mother was abusive. It may not have started that way but it got that way. And a lot of people hated Christina for airing out that dirty laundry but that was also a healing process for her and a lot of people victim blamed her by not believing her. This is the experience of many adult children of abusive parents. They're often belittled for airing out that so-called dirty laundry when in reality what the parents are really pissed about is that their child dared to hold a mirror to their face.

Joan was a A malignant narcissist who never met a drink she couldn’t abuse. The glamour was the disguise she used to hide the monster inside. FYI Joans entire household corroborated Christina’s version of events. As did a good majority of her friends and costars including Kurt Douglas and Lana Turner, it wasn’t just that Joan was abusing her daughter and son, she was bragging about it (That’s according to Natalie Schafer, Mrs Howl from Gilligans island). Why, because child abuse wasn’t illegal at the time. But thanks to Christina publishing her book it’s now illegal to raise a child that way. Children now have rights that they didn’t have back then. Joanne may have been talented, she may have been pretty, but she was also a monster.

Affects of Joan's past abuse by others, and mistreatment, spilled into her raising her children. She was strictly on all four, but the first two were also mentally and physically abused.

That's just how it was. It literally says "spare the rod, spoil the child" in the Bible. It's completely unfair to cast someone who spanked with a wire hanger once as a monster. I remember my cousin was a holy terror when he was a kid, my aunt would actually tie him to his bed, like Christina says in her book that Joan did to her little brother, no one in the family thought it as abuse not even my cousin. As an adult he would laugh and say he would’ve been walking on the rooftop if he hadn’t been tied to the bed. 🤦‍♂️ I’m not saying that any of this was right, I’m just saying that it’s the way it was, things obviously are different now.
