    I'm surprised you talked so much about what might be limiting humans from growing larger and listed mundane stuff like blood pressure, bone and muscle. It seems like you're saying we CAN'T evolve to be larger, when plenty of animals have accomplished just that feat numerous times in the past. The only thing I can think of that might put some sort of upper limit on humans would be the fairly unique structure of our bodies. The "absolute" vertical design of our bodies might make it so, somehow, our spines simply cannot support that structure if it got too large. I'm not even sure about that though, I believe the fossil record has some pretty big animals with vertical spines like ours (I could be wrong on that).
    As far as the insects go with the exoskeletons, I'm surprised you said that. Prehistoric times had some massive insect specimens. My understanding is insect size is limited by their respiratory system. Their size is limited by the oxygen content in their environment and the atmosphere of the past had much higher oxygen levels at times.
    As a general rule, I am very skeptical when someone says something CAN'T evolve, period. If you look at the incredible complexity of life now and in the past and, after seeing what has been done, are comfortable saying what can and can't evolve, then I'll take what you say with a large grain of salt.

    • @xavierxrc

      If we evolve to accommodate a larger size then we would no longer be human, so the question is still satisfied by the answer. He didn't say anything about evolving into a new species. Structurely we would have to be on all fours and be shaped more like spheres instead of like vertical rectangles now. It's called the square-cubed law from mathematics

    • @SangoProductions213
      @SangoProductions213 9 років тому +5

      xavierxrc define "human" as, each person born will generally define themselves as human, and because evolution happens over many,many generations (ie. you don't get an aligator from a duck's egg), then the next generation is close enough to the last one to say "yeah, they're the same" and because the last generation defined themselves as humans, the new one are humans. And so on so forth.
      The "lines" between species is very much debated, and they are blurry.

    • @SangoProductions213
      @SangoProductions213 9 років тому +3

      There is currently very little to no evolutionary pressure doing anything, much less to increase their size. Technology compensates for biological deficiencies.

    • @Ravinian
      @Ravinian 9 років тому +1

      xavierxrc
      So what you're saying is human's can't grow any larger, but if they do evolve to be larger, then they won't be human anymore. Sounds like you've defined yourself into an unbeatable position, not a lot of fun though.

    Disorders like gigantism caused by tumors isn't a reliable way to determine the upper limit of human height. Their bodies are growing unevenly, with bones taking up the majority of the growth. If they were born as if they were evolved to be at a great height rather than through a disorder, their bodies would be fully adapted to that height and they wouldn't suffer the sort of problems that those with gigantism have. I'd say the upper limit of humans, before their bodies start to look non-human, would be around 12 feet, possibly 20 feet under the right conditions.

    I think the statement you made about insects was false, insects were larger in the past.
    The limiting factor for insects (in the current time and place) isn't gravity, it's oxygen.
    The reason that they were larger was because there was more oxygen in the air (due to pressure or higher concentration, idk). Insects take in their oxygen through their exoskeletons, and as insects get larger, they would need more oxygen to support themselves. But, their surface area would increase by the square, while oxygen needed would increase by the cube. Therefore, more oxygen means bigger insects

    • @ricktheexplorer

    Actually, the primary limiting factor in the size of insects these days is atmospheric oxygen levels. There is a lot less O2 in the air than there was 65 million years ago. That's why there aren't dragon flies the size of eagles, or millipedes the size of men, anymore. But eventually, given enough oxygen to grow massive, insects would hit an upper limit because of their weight.

    The size of insects is mostly limited by oxygen ratio in the atmosphere. They don't have lungs or circulatory system like we do but have internal tubes that aren't effective enough for a larger creature (due to the surface-area-to-volume ratio).
    This is why there used to be a lot bigger insects in the past when there was almost 30% oxygen in the air.

      Yeah, don't doubt me, I stand at 2 meters dead, wich is 6'7, is perfectly normal for people to reach this height, it's just not as common, the average human height is around 1.75 meters, wich is 5'7 or something like that, but it still changes between countries, like in Holland where the average height is around 6'2 or like here in Mexico where the average height is around 5'4.

    • @Starfire_Storm

      I told you that because in some countries it's rarer to see tall people than in others, I stand out a lot here in Mexico because people are generally short, but in Holland I would not stand out as much, wich I didn't when I traveled there, yeah, it's not common to see people over 6'5'' but they exist, and a lot of them, the human can rach around 7 feet without having a disorder, any taller and you do have one, the same goes for being short, shorten than 1.45 meters and you most likely have a disorder

    i was under the impression that insect size limits were largely due to oxygen content. insects use to be a lot larger(think 2 foot wingspan, 60 cm) but gravity has not changed significantly, during that time oxygen content was much higher as well. basically insects breath via small holes in their body that air has to diffuse into, the larger the body the farther the oxygen would need to defuse to be effective. however with a higher percentage of oxygen in the air less of it needs to get as far in to have the same effect.

    What about the "Giant of Castelnau"? Back in 1890, a set of Neolithic remains (a humerus, tibia and femoral mid-shaft) were dug up in southern France. Reportedly, the size of the bones pointed to a human being standing 11' 6" (3.5 meters). I'll concede, however, that no peer-reviewed study has been published on the alleged bone fragments. But still, pretty damn interesting.

  • @oreubens

    3:21 this isn't entirely correct. Back in prehistoric times (carboniferous iirc) insects were HUGE (75cm dragonflies, 70cm scorpions, 2.5m millipedes, spiders with 50cm legspans...).
    What keeps insects sizes small today is the amount of oxigen in the air. Insects take in oxygen through their exoskeleton and so the amount they can absorb is limited keeping their size in check. In that specific prehistory era, there was a lot more oxygen in the air allowing insects to be much larger.

    There is another method for fighting against the limiting factors of great height - gravity and lack of enough oxygen pressure -: Lying down in bed all day long (sleeping (desired) or not). I have evidence that this works, from a person where I work who is I think approximately 7 feet tall or more, and when I asked him how did he grow so much, he told me just that method he used until or yet recently.

    When I was little I was always "the tall one" but then some of my friends outgrew me which messed a little with my self-image as I was no longer enough above average height to be worth noting.
    It's not a problem for me and I know I'm not short by any standard, but as I said, if I could I wouldn't mind an extra 10 cm or so to again be viewed as a "tall guy".
    Also, as most people prefer the guy to be taller than the girl it would make dating tall girls a lot nicer for both me and the girl.
    Somewhere around 190 cm is probably the maximum height one can comfortably be in today's western society as houses, furniture, cars etc. doesn't accommodate people taller than that without some discomfort.

    Given the information in this video about how gravity affects human growth. There is one thing I've always wondered. Now most people know about dragon ball z and how The main character Goku trained in 100x Gravity to get stronger to fight the villain Frieza. It wasn't all at once. He trained 10x Gravity then 20x then 30x etc... Till he Eventualy got to 100x. And muscle is heaver then fat. So the higher the gravity the "heavier" he got. Meaning his boldly fluids and bone structure became denser due to added pressure thus his muscles began to thicken and harden. He gets stronger and is able to take a few more hits. I know this is from a cartoon and everything is quite exaggerated but I've always wondered if getting stronger though this method is theoretically possible for humans? Could we become as strong as goku if we wanted? Lol obviously going from a low gravity environment to a high gravity environment is quite dangerous but humans are adaptable creatures and if introduced to a new environment slightly over time then the translation shouldn't be a problem correct? Or is it just not possible?

    I would thought we would be getting taller on average, perhaps surpassing the upper limit, or at least extending it, as the average person has access to a lot more energy and nutrients especially in more refined and concentrated forms.
    The only thing I can think of limiting us at the moment is simply natural evolution, our bodies aren't adapting quick enough to deal with the abundance of energy, hence diabetes, heart disease and other similar problems.
    That said, I'm not an expert, nor am I studying this topic, this is just a thought or opinion. And as such, I admit that I could be completely wrong. :)

    Actually this video could have been solved much faster if Traci had explained that as an animal (e.g. didyoulisiten) increases in size, its mass increases with the cube of the size (because of 3D volume), but the bone- and muscle strength to carry that weight increases only with the square of its size, and falling behind the larger the animal (e.g. an animal like didyoulisiten).
