Shelter in place is absurd. Narrow roads ...come on! There right there on the PCH, just head West, folks!!!

Pardon my ignorance as I'm not in the US......how come the fires when it's supposed to be cold and maybe even snowing? I'm 10000s of km from the US, FYI

You don't have that right! Southern CA weather is semi-arid, warm, Santa Ana winds gust up to 60 mph, even up to Hurricane strength, these winds come out of the desert and head south west. It's almost impossible to find a wildfire that is wind driven. Snow is up north in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. California has every weather / geology on the planet, as has the United States. You can find the weather on The Weather Channel.

It isn't that cold in southern California. Has been in the 70s (F) in recent days.

meant to say "fight a wind driven fire" -thanks for your interest - I live in Camarillo CA -several miles just due West of the Franklin Fire. Camarillo just had an even more devastating fire (Mountain Fire) the second week of November. I'm glad the rest of the world has an interest in us. Thank you!

6% humidty 40 to 95 mile per hour wind gusts. 40mph wind allows dangerous embers to travel 5 miles.

Building is fireproof, has fire suppression system.HVAC has filtration. If the students scatter they may drive/walk directly into the fire zone, or stop to rest and wake up dead in the fire zone when it reaches them. One fender bender on a narrow road could back up hundreds of cars into the fire zone.

These are the "Last" of the "Last Day's" Matthew 24:3-14. Jesus said it would be this way during the time of his "Presence" and the "Conclusion" of this system of things. He said there would be "Fearful Sights" during this time period. Compare Luke 21:11. These things are happening all over the earth and with greater frequency. The End is imminent. The extreme weather changes, flooding, famines, fires, hurricanes, and earthquakes are all part of the composite "Sign" he gave mankind to watch for before the End would come. Seek God and his righteousness, seek meekness, seek Gods Kingdom while there is still time. Compare Zephaniah 2:3 and Matthew 24:14. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the affected people's.

It's a game of odds. It is rarely like this. Fires impact different areas in different years, and usually affect only a tiny percentage of the total structures in Malibu-Topanga. Evacuations, when they happen, rarely last more than a few days. (We had none when I lived there.) The rest of the time, the mountain views, the ocean views, the relative un-crowdedness, being able to sleep with your bedroom windows open to the sound of coyotes instead of sirens and the smell of eucalyptus and sage and ocean breezes instead of smog ... for some people the benefits outweigh the risks. Of course, besides the chance of fire there are other drawbacks, such as the cost and the commute. But even if you're stuck in rush hour traffic on PCH, you realize that you are stuck in rush hour traffic next to the beautiful, glistening Pacific Ocean, so you better enjoy it while you can.
