1:04 Brazilian here, and I'd like to talk for a bit about the "cachaça is rum" debate if anyone's interested. I will start by conceding that yes, cachaça is pretty much the same as rhum agricole (don't tell my Brazilian friends I said that!), _however_ It was probably developed _before_ most rums (surely before rhum agricole was first distilled in the French Caribbean, cachaça probably started being distilled in engenhos -- Brazilian sugarcane plantation -- as early as the 1530s), but the process is very similar (I think it's perfectly reasonable to say that every spirit distilled from sugarcane products is a type of rum). Besides that, there is clearly a distinct culture that has developed around cachaça and cachaça-making which is separate from Caribbean rum -- believe me when I say cachaça is a huge deal in Brazil, and the differences between cachaças can be even bigger than the differences between, say, Cuban and Jamaican rum. Don't think that cachaça is "just" Brazilian rum, and that if you've drunk one, you've drunk all. There is a lot of variety, and if a drink enthusiast is ever in Brazil it's highly encouraged to try many different types, neat or in a well-made caipirinha. Sidenote, it is possible (though not likely) that the caipirinha is actually a Brazilian version of the old-fashioned. It was probably invented in high-class cocktail parties thrown by rich São Paulo landowners during a shortage of whisky, which was (and still is) widely consumed in Brazil, in order to appease old-fashioned drinkers (hence the similar preparation -- a caipirinha is not shaken like a daiquiri, even though the ingredients are the same -- spirit, lime and sugar --, but built in the glass in much the same way as an old-fashioned).
Problem with cachaca is its global reach has been very limited for most of modern history. Only one or two brands made it out (I think 51 was the only brand I ever saw in Australia for years) and only the most hipster of bars would ever have it. It's only now that we're truly seeing the gates open and more brands make it onto the global market; we now get Novo Fogo, Sagatiba, Leblon and occasionally a harder-to-find smaller brand. Though now I live in South Africa and again, there is just one kind of cachaca in just one bar in my town (I don't even know what kind it is; just gonna assume it's 51 or Leblon). The upshot is that our perception of what you can do with it is still very limited. Given it's basically a rhum agricole you would think it would lend itself well to any drinks that call for rhum, but bartenders still seem very reluctant to experiment with it and will only ever do caipirinhas.

I love this format tbh. I would make a series out of this, with some strange riffs on other classic cocktails, like “Will it Martini” or “Will it Sour?”
(7:00) I'm wondering if the Italicus would make a good alternative to the simple syrup in an Old Fashioned with another base spirit. I like to use St. Germain instead of syrup in a whiskey Old Fashioned (around here we call it an Old Saint), and I suspect that many other sweet liqueurs will work. Of course, is it still an Old Fashioned if you do that?
It would be an Old Fashioned style cocktail according to the Cocktail Codex but it wouldn’t really fit into the Old Fashioned family of Spirit, sugar, bitters
When my dad was younger he used to have one straight, neat peppermint schnapps every night after work. We got curious as pre-teens often do, and would pour some in a glass and walk around outside drinking it. My mom would have a fit when she found out, but no one knew we were drinking alcohol (if they weren't up close), and it gave us minty fresh breath to boot!
Seeing the hello fresh add gives me hope for a future episode or series where you can show us how to pair cocktails and foods. I've been trying to figure it out myself and made terrible mistakes
@@howtodrink I'm new to the cocktail experience and still finding those flavors in general. Ended up having a lemon drop with seafood...don't just don't

This episode was a lot of fun. I laughed out loud more than once. And, once again, you do the BEST sponsorship breaks. You're pretty much the only youtuber I watch that I don't skip on the promo because I enjoy what you do with them so much. And it's fun to see Meredith getting more and more vocal on the show. Great job, you guys.
I make a rum old fashion with Dark Pilar Rum, Caramelized Fig Syrup, and Angustora bitters. It's flipping fantastic so I could see why the rum old fashion works. Enjoyed to video and seeing you suffer a little. Keep up the good work!!
The Ancho reminded me of one time at a party when someone brought a bottle of chili pepper vodka that they were clearly looking to get rid of, and I started making mules with it. The chili and the ginger went together really well. Other people started asking me to make the same drink for them, and suddenly that cast-off bottle was empty ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
If anybody tries these, maybe use Minttu for the peppermint one. Minttu is 50% ABV so it should get closer to Old Fashioned alcohol levels (or even overshoot it slightly).
Orange peel is a key ingredient in Mexican-style coffee, so coffee liqueur with Mole bitters and orange is basically Mexican coffee, the cocktail, which sounds delicious.
Loved this episode - such an old fashioned fan. Often do a Mescal old fashioned with mole bitters, Demerara simple and a twist of orange… if you’re really feeling frisky add a half dropper of saline! Hooeeey!
@@brianriley9055 could work - sometimes slated rims are too much for me. But you could do like a little dusting. Or, put salt on the big rock so it slowly melts into the drink as you enjoy
I love this series as an idea. It's something I've recently touched upon with a friend in regards to things like Moscow Mule or a Dark and Stormy. The base drink has a concept behind it but can be executed in numerous ways.
This was a quite interesting episode. It may just be me, but I really enjoy these experimental episodes, where you throw non-standard ingredients together and see what happens. It appeals to the mad scientist part of my brain.
Out of everyone who is sponsored by HelloFresh I don't think I've seen anyone actually show the product before cooking. Thank you HTD. That actually makes me want to buy it a little more honestly.
I have been binge watching you so much lately. You’re a super genuine dude with a fantastic personality! Just followed you on twitch too since I’m a gamer. I appreciate what you do man you’re awesome.
Great show & love the idea of experimenting! I do love a good old fashioned. Of the ones here I'd love to try the Mr. Black Whistle Pig Coffee O.F., maybe treat it like a morning/brunch drink, like you would have a mimosa or bloody mary. That Gosling's Rum O.F. sounded wonderful!! I'd like to see you play around more with that Ancho Reyes O.F. too, adding instead that honey syrup & salt or other spice. Maybe whenever you make a drink, but have other ideas afterwards,...write them down & do a whole show of "Second Try" drinks.
What a great episode! I'm in Wisconsin where they think old fashioneds come with muddling and mixers. I've been saying for years that this drink can be made with any spirit. And I do it in similar ways
HAHA, I read the title and was like…this sounds a lot like GMM. glad to hear him address that in what were literally the first words out of his mouth. This channel appears to have more integrity than any other entertainment that I can think of. You never let us down or pull the wool over our eyes, and we love you for that ❤️
Here's hoping he makes more content like this. I'd love "will it sour", especially if it gets him to do my personal favorite drink, a calvados (apple brandy) sour
Loving the videos lately! Really looking forward to the next history heavy episode though! Gotta love the 40 minute videos about rum and whiskey and whatnot
I may be seeing things that aren't there, but it looks like you added an more upbeat song to the rum Old Fashioned section to start playing as you started to build the drink to indicate a more positive, energetic atmosphere to complement your excitement for the concept of this drink. If so, that was a nice touch editing-wise. If not, well, it worked, haha. It also looked like video-wise the flow was a little more dramatic and faster with more exciting angles used as well. Even it it wasn't intentional, I think it was pretty great editing.
I think Rhett and Link would welcome their influence on a genre they can't really explore due to their family friendly content. And yes, more would be appreciated! This was a fun exploration of a basic formula. I think maybe as a cherry on top you could take into account all the components you explored and make the best drink you can imagine from your favorites.
I watched the whole ad. I'm in the market for a meal-prep kinda thing, and the presentation was well done. Regarding the cachaca, I'm not surprised that you were leaning towards basically turning it into a caipirinha. You've made one before, and it just feels like the natural route to go there.
I would love to see more videos with this format. I already kinda stopped watching Will It because it’s just them eating good food pretty much and nothing interesting happens. But this is a neat variation. Maybe he could do something like a Will It Mule or whatever the other similar drink is called. I can’t remember right now.
Honestly yeah. It’s definitely not as fun recently. Really just watching ‘Will It’ just to see the absolutely incredible skill that the Mythical Kitchen has; I definitely still enjoy the series but for totally different reasons.
The new Will It's also lose an element the originals had, which is if it Did, you could try it yourself. Now if it Does, it's always with the asterisk that it's painstakingly prepared by professionals. It Does, sometimes, in theory. Sort of feels like cheating. I still enjoy them but the segment is fundamentally different than it was at the beginning.
Not going to lie, I was hoping to see a lot more spirits. Where's the mescal, the absinth, the expensive islay scotch, the lighter fuel, I mean the everclear, the Baijiu or sochu, or something like akvavit ???
While I dig Meredith picking random bottles, I agree that an episode that looks at base spirits in this matter would be rad. I suppose the counter argument is that most of those base spirits with OF ingredients already exist as drinks, but it'd still be cool to have someone compare them side by side
@@Ghonosyphlaids exactly, the Oaxaca old fashioned, scotch old fashioned, absinth old fashioned, etc. make for nice cocktails, but not a fun game. We know they old fashioned already, no point in trying them in a video like this. Peppermint schnapps, ancho reyes, Mr. Black? That’s much more interesting. Baijiu, sochu and akvavit are fine suggestions though! Akvavit especially could be a fun one
I don’t agree, that’s what made this interesting. Of course something like the Goslings here will make a good old fashioned, a rum old fashioned is nothing new, that’s boring. Making a decent old fashioned out of peppermint schnapps or ancho reyes? Now *that's* interesting!
This is like building a house, and you know what to do for walls and a roof. However you keep getting handed these bizzare foundations and can't just tell the world you can't build a house on Styrofoam, you must show them.
The transition into this ad was possibly the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen on UA-cam. Brava! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Also - I love seeing more of Meredith on the show. You work so well together!
9:30 there's actualy a 'cocktail' (using that term loosely here) called the snowshoe that is essentially whiskey and peppermint schnapps that works pretty well.
Kinda ironic that you post this right after my husband said we're going to a place in Virginia Beach tonight that has a make your own old fashioned or Manhattan menu, I'm very excited to try it out.
Greg, I love your content. I just started working in the liquor industry about a year ago and your videos perfectly make that connection between the work I love and the content I love. Your video concepts are well thought out, entertaining, educational, perfectly sarcastic, and creative. I hope to see continuations on all the little series' you do like this will it, the matrix videos, the "what is" videos, really just anything. Thanks for doing what you do and for being a great resource and superb entertainer for this industry. Salud!
Where is our next precode movie and drink show? I loved that episode. Also keep up the good work. Every Thursday this show makes me smile even though I am a tea toller. Also soda jerk episode would be fun
I don't drink often, but thanks to this show, have gotten more and more obsessed with bitters. Just a dash in all sorts of non-cocktail beverages is a fun way to make flavors more complex and interesting.
I love seeing you apply your knowledge of these ingredients and understanding of how to balance them on the fly. So I would absolutely enjoy more videos where you are given ingredients and are forced to either do riffs on establish drinks or invent new ones on the spot
Assuming you keep this series up and try out other drinks with random spirits, I think it'd be fun to have an All-Stars episode where you take the drinks that came out the best and develop them into something more nuanced and original. Like the Mr. Black Old Fashioned being developed into something on its own.
Throwing a thumbs up for taking the slow mo close ups we know and love and applying them seamlessly to the HelloFresh ad. Also yes, I suppose the content surrounding the advertisement was also fun 🙃
Lol, thanks for bringing back this memory: Peppermint Schnapps was the bane of my existence in college. Not because I drank it, but because (many) more than a few members of our marching band spiked the hot chocolate they guzzled during the 1st half of football games with it … & then my job was to conduct their inebriated selves in pieces like the 1812 & William Tell overtures! And a good number of the sots were lower brass players (including one friend who would, many years later, become my husband🤷🏻♀️), which really messed with everything. Fortunately for me, the percussion section leader was pretty much a tea totaler, so I had at least that going in my favor! Thanks for the flashback!
I know not everyone is going to be on this one but that was a fantastic Hello Fresh commercial. The integration with the show, the easy process, it made consider HF. Great Job guys keep up the great content.
The Old Fashioned and the Dark and Stormy are my top 2 fave cocktails, so the Gosling's Old Fashioned is hella up my ally. The next one I would try is the Mr. Black. This was awesome, Rhett and Link would be proud.
ngl that was one of the most compelling ad reads I've seen. I'd be game to just watch you cook with the same sorts of closeups and camera angles as you make drinks
Hiya Greg, loved the episode. I recently experimented with twists on the old fashioned myself, and found that a nice mezcal (tbh I went half and half with tequila) with agave syrup and some smoked chili bitters, garnished with a lemon twist (and a slice of chili pepper) makes an amazing drink. I'm anxious to hear your take on that! Cheers
Excellent work from everyone at how to drink as usual. My favorite videos are the ones that make me want to try and make the cocktail, I found none in this one but entertaining nonetheless. I turned 21 last year so I don’t have a ton of time training my palate, I would have to say old fashioned used to be my favorite because it used my favorite spirit and it was super easy. BUT! After making Craig’s favorite gin drinks it definitely turned me to where I think gin is my favorite spirit at least for mixing. My go to quick drink is now a Tom Collins with various syrups that I have made thanks to your channels help. I am currently experimenting with infusing lavender into a London dry. Around 500 ml with 4 tbsp of lavender flowers infused For about 4 hours. I feel like I’m piggybacking off of the earl grey marTEAni tbh. But here is how I have made the lavender drink. 1oz blue Berry syrup 2 oz gin 2 dash ango bitters .75 oz Lemon Shake with ice I find that it has a nice lavender flavor at the beginning a little bit of sour in the middle but not to where it overtakes the blueberries that come in at the end. It is however nothing special in my opinion, just being honest. I would be welcomed to try anyones suggestions to help me improve this cocktail. I have tried adding mint, misting the glass with a bit of Jägermeister, different bitters etc. I haven’t tried adding egg white, but it’s on my list.

I love this format tbh. I would make a series out of this, with some strange riffs on other classic cocktails, like “Will it Martini” or “Will it Sour?”
8:28 “this is an exercise in the most deprived futility’s “ I love this show lol
I had the same thouģht. Likewise with the schnapps and the aperol.
It may not be an Old Fashioned, but it is part of the family of the Improved Whiskey Cocktail, of which the Old Fashioned descended from.
The St. Germain version is intriguing, and I happen to have a bottle. I'll need to try that
I have been looking for something to use my st germain in so I am definitely going to need to try this!
The way all the positivity flowed out of his voice when he looked at the vodka was priceless
i already love this concept, PLEASE do more
When my dad was younger he used to have one straight, neat peppermint schnapps every night after work. We got curious as pre-teens often do, and would pour some in a glass and walk around outside drinking it. My mom would have a fit when she found out, but no one knew we were drinking alcohol (if they weren't up close), and it gave us minty fresh breath to boot!
Nice story.
That sounds sarcastic but it's not.
Seeing the hello fresh add gives me hope for a future episode or series where you can show us how to pair cocktails and foods. I've been trying to figure it out myself and made terrible mistakes
Honestly I think cocktails are mostly so LOUD flavor wise they just kinda go wherever they want.
just had a rum toddy with Pizza, so I might also need this advice.
Cocktails typically don’t really pair well with food since food and cocktails compete to be the main flavour
@@karangupta4615 that sounds worrying
@@howtodrink I'm new to the cocktail experience and still finding those flavors in general. Ended up having a lemon drop with seafood...don't just don't
I love this! I am sure Rhett and Link would consider episodes like this a loving homage. As a long time mythical beast and lover of your channel I am confident of this.
In honor of warmer weather, I anxiously await the "will it tiki" episode!
Love and adore Meredith!
That sounds legitimately delicious.
That does sound really good.
My mouth is watering. I don't suppose that caramelized fig syrup is a secret recipe that you could share?
Hooeeey!
What about salting the rim instead of adding saline?
@@brianriley9055 could work - sometimes slated rims are too much for me. But you could do like a little dusting. Or, put salt on the big rock so it slowly melts into the drink as you enjoy
Would agave work better than demerara?
I love this series as an idea. It's something I've recently touched upon with a friend in regards to things like Moscow Mule or a Dark and Stormy. The base drink has a concept behind it but can be executed in numerous ways.
This was a quite interesting episode. It may just be me, but I really enjoy these experimental episodes, where you throw non-standard ingredients together and see what happens. It appeals to the mad scientist part of my brain.
@14:39 Orange twist and coffee is great. I just put a twist in my espresso shot strait up. Love it!
This was great! I love watching greg trying to figure out recipes. These types of episodes are a lot of fun.
Love a good "torture Greg" episode, but it's also always fun when Meredith is more of a character in the show. This format definitely has potential.
I haven't laughed this hard for a while. A+ choices, production and Greg's reaction.
Not to mention the vast quantities of drink visibly spilling all over the bar and every other surface in a 5km radius with every close-up... 😄
Out of everyone who is sponsored by HelloFresh I don't think I've seen anyone actually show the product before cooking. Thank you HTD. That actually makes me want to buy it a little more honestly.
I love when a drink breaks Greg it's so funny
I have been binge watching you so much lately. You’re a super genuine dude with a fantastic personality! Just followed you on twitch too since I’m a gamer. I appreciate what you do man you’re awesome.
Hey don't forget Meredith! Jk
Another great episode. Love when Meredith gives you challenges, especially.
holy moly those are some gorgeous glamour shots. you make food look gooooooood!
I was there during the Twitch stream when this ad spot was filmed. It's so cool to see how it turned out!
0:10 "Let's talk about that!" 😃
We got the whole range of Greg’s drink emotions in this one!
I need more "Will it Old Fashion?" So I can figure out what to do with the liquor my roommates keep buying.
What a great episode! I'm in Wisconsin where they think old fashioneds come with muddling and mixers. I've been saying for years that this drink can be made with any spirit. And I do it in similar ways
Greg: "How far can we stretch the definition of an old fashioned here?"
Wisconsin: "Hold my beer!"
Now I'm curious. What's goes in it?
Edit: thats wild. Because of the "hold my beer" I tought of a beer Old Fashioned. That'be weird to see.
@@artbk a Wisconsin old fashioned is brandy with sprite.
wisconsin: wait a minute i’m already putting enough weird shit in here maybe hand me the beer back
HAHA, I read the title and was like…this sounds a lot like GMM. glad to hear him address that in what were literally the first words out of his mouth.
I'd love to see a version of the best way to make an old fashioned for each spirit (playing with different syrups/bitters, etc.)
Even it it wasn't intentional, I think it was pretty great editing.
love the homage to gmm. great content as always
I think that this could be a really cool series!!!! Maybe a "Will It Tiki" in the future? Please!!!!! 🥺🥺🥺🥺
Love hearing Meredith's input! Nice to have the conversational aspect to the show!
Really like this format - the response and drink improv based on rules/structure, and the breadth of options.
Love this format, but Meredith should be held to the rule of picking a true spirit
Spirit of truth!
Will Kao Ling Wine old fashioned?
I mean we got some interesting results here despite that so I'm not upset
I don’t agree, that’s what made this interesting. Of course something like the Goslings here will make a good old fashioned, a rum old fashioned is nothing new, that’s boring. Making a decent old fashioned out of peppermint schnapps or ancho reyes? Now *that's* interesting!
the hello fresh ad made me realize your camera setup is perfect for cooking Greg. Everything looks so great.
Ooh I like this idea. Maybe you can do “will it martini 🍸? In the future?
The snake tongue reaction really says it all on some of these. Also these new close-ups are a lot of fun.
This is like building a house, and you know what to do for walls and a roof. However you keep getting handed these bizzare foundations and can't just tell the world you can't build a house on Styrofoam, you must show them.
"Glass of sorrow" - love it!! 😁😁😁😁
The sheer amount of plastic packaging in that Hello Fresh sponsor section is deeply upsetting
The transition into this ad was possibly the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen on UA-cam. Brava! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Also - I love seeing more of Meredith on the show. You work so well together!
Malort Old Fasioned
So fun fact, last night I was morbidly curiously looking for malort infusions, and I only found one.
@@danielbickford3458 only infusion: infuse it into the trashcan
@@MrKinglyProductions like I said, it was morbid curiosity
This was a fun episode and I like how Greg and Meredith play of each other.
12:25 it was at this moment where Greg contemplated using the knife next to him on Meredith... but he knew she would overpower him.
I love making a rum old fashioned. I personally enjoy el dorado 12 year as my base spirit and plain old ango for the bitters. It works so well.
9:30 there's actualy a 'cocktail' (using that term loosely here) called the snowshoe that is essentially whiskey and peppermint schnapps that works pretty well.
I don’t know what it is, but each sponsor segment and behind the scenes glimpse just really makes me think Tool Time. I love it
Kinda ironic that you post this right after my husband said we're going to a place in Virginia Beach tonight that has a make your own old fashioned or Manhattan menu, I'm very excited to try it out.
Love the mini-montage of Greg smelling the Italicus with the bitters bottle next to it to match them up.
@8:05 the light starts to fall.
But I really enjoy a Plantation rum Old Fashioned
The camera work in the frying pan was just **chef's kiss** perfection!
And yes, the camera work around the pour IS perfection
I'm loving these "Meredith Picks Stuff" videos. Keeps Greg on this toes. 😉
This!!
I Brazilian and never heard about Novo Fogo Cachaça... Learning something new every day...
Assuming you keep this series up and try out other drinks with random spirits, I think it'd be fun to have an All-Stars episode where you take the drinks that came out the best and develop them into something more nuanced and original. Like the Mr. Black Old Fashioned being developed into something on its own.
loved the episode. To be honest, that Ad was great too. I think a fun addition would be a total time ticker in the bottom to show how quick it was.
Throwing a thumbs up for taking the slow mo close ups we know and love and applying them seamlessly to the HelloFresh ad.
Also yes, I suppose the content surrounding the advertisement was also fun 🙃
Lol, thanks for bringing back this memory:
Peppermint Schnapps was the bane of my existence in college.
Thanks for the flashback!
mer’s selections really bring out the creativity in you greg
The dual sniffing maneuver is legit the best way to test flavors before adding them. +1 for dual sniff method.
The Ad for HelloFresh was actually wonderfully done. For once I didn't skip the ad portion. Good job H2D, excellent execution
Cheers
The goslings description had my mouth watering, now Im going to venture into the world of rum old fashioneds.
That was the best AD and combination of content ever. definitely the best sponsorship blend in an episode.
1oz blue Berry syrup
2 oz gin
2 dash ango bitters
.75 oz Lemon
Shake with ice
I find that it has a nice lavender flavor at the beginning a little bit of sour in the middle but not to where it overtakes the blueberries that come in at the end.
