This was chock full o' interesting facts! And not just about the cool glasses. I'm fairly certain I had some of the McDonald's glasses back in the late 70's. I had no idea Howdy Doody ran for so long! AND I didn't know that Sabrina the Teenage Witch was originally a comic book. Thanks for sharing yet another great video! :-)
Thanks for watching and your insightful comments. You're right, Howdy Doody was on for quite a while! Originally it was on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and then went to Monday through Friday in 1948. In 1956 it went to once a week on Saturday mornings. Sabrina was part of the Archie comics world, but it was the animated TV series (in its second season, as The Archie Comedy Hour) that shot her to stardom.
I collect Monarch Foods items and there was a series of glasses, featuring mascot Leo the Lion in the 1950s. After watching this, I wonder if the glasses originally came with some kind of food inside.
I think coffee and tea were the main two, but the company did every sort of condiment and even cooking ingredients, such as spices and cloves. I think it's still a regional company in the Southeast.
Another great episode, Jim. Great topic! Collectible drinking glasses from that era were so fun. I have several of the DC Super Heroes series of Pizza Hut/Pepsi glasses in my collection. I also remember having the King King (1976 movie) glasses from Burger Chef/Coca-Cola as a kid. The Rescuers glasses are awesome. I come across Bernard, Bianca, and Penny quite often at toy shows and antique shops and have seen Medusa, Brutus & Nero, and Orville once or twice, but I don't think I even knew about Evinrude or Rufus until now. Love 'em! I'm surprised that they didn't follow those up with glasses from Pete's Dragon that winter, but it's November release date likely coincided with other holiday-themed promotions.
Scott, thank you! I so appreciate your support. Those DC and King Kong glasses are so cool. I agree, The Rescuers glasses are great. Glad to hear I was able to show you Evinrude and Rufus! Pete's Dragon would have been a great follow-up, but maybe part of the reason that wasn't done is that Pete's Dragon has only one animated character! On the other hand, Pizza Hut could have featured cartoon versions of Pete, Lampy et al as the Little Golden Book and the storyteller record album did. that would have been fun!
Love this, Jim! I haven't collected drinking glasses yet, but your video is certainly inspiring. I have several vintage plastic character related child size mugs, though. Have you come across any of the metal covers for those early jars / glasses?
The giveaway plastic mugs are really cool, such as the Hanna-Barbara and Pogo themed examples. I personally have never seen the metal covers for the jelly jars, only a few photos.
I have been collecting character glasses for over forty years.
That's awesome! You must have an amazing collection.
Love it!!!
So happy you enjoyed the video, Dean! Here’s to you. (You have to imagine me raising one of the character drinking glasses to you.) 😉
Cheers mate!!

Could be. What kind of foods did Monarch produce? Thanks for the comment and for watching!

Remember my grandmother having a set of some of these, or similar, and drinking vanilla flavored milk out of them. Good times.
That's a nice memory of your grandmother, Joe. I'm sure she had the glasses just for you!
