Habba Khatoon was born in the 16th century in the village of Chandrahar, located in the Kashmir Valley, which is now a part of Jammu and Kashmir, India. She was born into a humble family and demonstrated a natural inclination towards poetry from a young age.
According to popular accounts, Habba Khatoon's poetic talent caught the attention of Yusuf Shah Chak, who was the ruler of Kashmir at the time. Impressed by her abilities, Yusuf Shah Chak married Habba Khatoon and bestowed upon her the title of "Zooni" (meaning "Moon" in Kashmiri). Thus, she came to be known as Habba Khatoon, combining her poetic name with her married title.

However, their marital bliss was short-lived due to political upheavals in Kashmir. The Mughal emperor Akbar's forces invaded the region, leading to the capture and exile of Yusuf Shah Chak. Habba Khatoon was forcibly separated from her husband and was left in a state of longing and sorrow.
After being separated from Yusuf Shah Chak, Habba Khatoon faced many hardships and wandered through the valleys of Kashmir, singing her melancholic verses. It is said that she would often sing her poems near the River Jhelum, expressing her pain and longing for her beloved.
