I have an ebike with a 48v, 13Ah battery and a 500w motor, bike is 70lbs. I’m a 54 year old, 170lb male and I have gotten 40 miles on a ride with 2 bars (of 5) left. I use pedal assist 0-2 most of the time, my wife has a step through bike similar weight and at 40miles her battery is pretty much done, she is in pedal assist 2 all the time. The deal is if her battery dies we can switch, so the battery anxiety is all mine, lol. I think the best thing about ebikes is that you can choose how much exercise you want to get, we go further and longer with less pain than we could otherwise, which makes it far more enjoyable.

Great video! Sometimes I go on these slow group bike rides (300+ bikes) in both the SF Bay Area & in Vegas, and I totally almost get those high advertised ranges on most ebikes. However, at 6'1"/235 lbs., in the real world, (you're right) that advertised range number is cut up to 50%. So, bikes that I only ride during these events, only need to be charged every two to four of those 8 to 15 mile big party rides.

The Torque sensor kind of changed what you would normally expect from an ebike range test, the motor was probably always providing some power for you with no actual speed cutoff. Where a cadence sensor equipped bike PAS 1 would assist up to it's cutoff speed then any effort would be all the rider, with the PAS keeping you from dropping below a certain speed. Maybe a test with a cadence sensor bike in the future

Nice review. I can remember when I could ride my normal bicycle for 100 miles non stop in around 5 hours. I don't think I could sit on a bicycle even with e assist for 100 miles at one sitting. Now let me hop on the Versys in your garage and I'd be good to go 😎.

I used to do that not so long ago but can't now. And Since I found out about e-bikes, I wouldn't. The fun part is now my wife can ride with me and keep up. 🙃

I will soon finish a range test on my Aventon Aventure 2, and based on early data I expect to exceed 90 miles. I'll let you know the results, CC, when I finish the test.
It will be on relatively flat ground, using no throttle, at normal 10-12 mph speeds, in temperatures above 60 degrees, and in the most economical PAS.
At the moment, I have 10 miles traveled, and battery is at 92%. Rain and cold weather has kept me from completing the test, and forecast still calls for rain this week.

Got 80 miles on my Kepler using PAS 1-2 with top speed limited to 20 mph and pedaling that entire time Average speed 12.4 mph no hills 200 lbs rider. Not much of my 80 miles was stop and go. I ended at 11%..1st day 51% after just over 50 miles. Next day 30 miles with 11% left and it still went throttle only 26mph😂 .. i did ride the Kepler a bit with PAS 0 at my rest area places a couple times. Maybe 2 miles PAS 0 at like 9-10 mph . Well if your going to ride it on pavement, The wider tires waste energy. I wonder how many miles and how much easier it would be if you had thinner tires not like 10-speed racing tires but you know a 2.0 to a 2.8 tire????

Do you notice a clang or clank in the rear motor of your wired freedom in the first few feet at the beginning of every ride once it’s been powered on? I am noticing this now and wonder if it’s just because I roll it backward first sometimes to get it out of my garage?

  • @Goesriding

I really hate how people try to pull the "longest range" bullocks about their bike... your bike can go for infinite miles if you turn off your bike off and walk it...
Good job Brian for doing this to show how stupid people are to pull the longest range stupidity. What drag literally lol.
If you want the longest range, then buy the best road bike and go further, faster, and do circles around stupid ebikers who buy ebikes to ride like this. So pointless and wasteful of an ebike.
