- On June 17th, 1997, United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia delivered the keynote address at the Acton Institute's 7th Anniversary dinner, held at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His remarks were entitled "On Interpreting the Constitution."
I cannot stop listening to this man now. Somehow I never paid much attention to him while he was alive and presided as a supreme justice, my loss. What an amazing individual, so exceptional. I cannot stop listening to him.
@ Maria A. I had the complete wrong impression of him when he was alive. He is a pleasure to listen to - such a brilliant mind and with so much wit!
Likewise. I can only share this with my kids, and it’s working.
I was lucky enough to have found him(on the internet) a few years before he was murdered. A great loss for mankind. One of the few irreplaceable intellects in history. Milton Friedman is also on that list.
I was so sad when he passed away.

I call him the father of originalism. A formidable legal genius and an immeasurable blessing to the United States. May God continue to rest his soul. El Nino!

@@arinzedike9693 To be honest I think he is a Originalist but nowhere near Scalia. But then again Very Few Wil be near Scalia. So it's a unfair comparison.
Gorsuch is a charming Man with a easy way about him. A kind of man's man and woman's man. Good looking, soft spoken and charming with that point where you don't want to get his back up. (But he's big on precedent. As circuit Court judge he had 97% in that regard). He's a bit of a charmer that has kissed the Blarney stone as they say. Nothing wrong with that. That's why, I suspect, his nomination was relatively easy. Scalia was wonderful with his humour and an eloquent writer, speaker and his straightforward approach to complex problems. Simply a genius. But he didn't think twice about Dissenting when he thought it was warranted. Kavanagh I suspect is somewhere in between. I've read his opinions (not all Obviously). He's not overly eloquent but very proficient. He's not an admirable writer but more than competent. He is Big on Due Process. It's a "horses for cources" thing is suppose. He's Fair and Straightforward with a Great Mind. One cannot ask for much more.
I'll Always be a Scalia fan but has a soft spot for Gorsuch. But I also like Kagan a Lot! Kavanagh is a family Man and will be great at the Supreme Court.

why did people not like him.?. all he did was stand for the constitution and if it was not in the constitution it should not come too the Supreme Court. as he said if you do not like Roe vs. Wade than vote it out or the same with the Death Penalty. the states have that right as some have done with the Death Penalty. voted to get rid of it.
I have always believed that brilliance is at least partially defined as “ being able to describe a very complex subject in a simple and easy to understand way “

It would be interesting to hear something on the role of the American constitution in contributing to American global dominance (economically, militarily, cultural etc...). Anybody have some reading analyzing that question favorably or critically?

i don't remember him claiming the US Constitution was the first, only that it was the best. The Magna Carta reads like kindergarten speech compared to the Constitution, so what if you got to say 'first, lawl xd' in the metaphorical youtube comments section of history.

Presidents being able to appoint supreme court judges is the point of flaw where the corruption started. Each judge of each circuit should have veto power over every appointment to their circuit, if (during an interview) they can find a textual flaw in the reasoning of the appointee.

*Danni* Opinions are like noses, everyone has one. Your opinion can become the way it is done by changing the Constitution. Thankfully we had intelligent men writing the Constitution who were forward thinking. It is a shame they didn't forbid women from being judges.
Your idea assumes the sitting judges will veto or accept based SOLELY on the appointed judges credentials and will not display favoritism or politics into their decision. The most obvious result will be a liberal court will always remain a liberal court and a conservative court will always remain a conservative court. One can always find a flaw, or interpret a flaw.
Precisely why founders wanted only originalism as means of interpretation. So it doesn’t matter who appoints the judges.
