I had the older low sawtooth X. They were indestructible. I have owned them for years. The tread is almost gone, so I have been to the store and tried the new ones. The old ones fit beautifully right out of the box. Regarding the new ones, I don't think the "improvements" are all they say. They are still very comfortable. The sizing is different though; I had to go a half size up. The flat laces stay tied, unlike the round ones, however, they are pretty flimsy. Oboz makes the best hiking shoes of any that I have ever worn. I will buy a new pair but I don't understand the need to mess with success.
I wasn't clear in my last review. I did not buy the pair of the lows in the local hiking store because they didn't have the size I needed. Instead, I purchased a pair of Sawtooth X low waterproofs directly from Oboz. These did not disappoint! I bought a 1/2 size up. Aside from that difference, the quality remains the same. They do come with round laces! Again, the shoes felt great right out of the box. I wore them around some to get the stiffness out, then proceeded to explore the Canadian Rockies, wearing them for a week. The shoes broke in beautifully with no problems whatsoever. I am just as happy with this pair as my old ones. I even kept the round laces from my old pair as a backup, since they are still in mint condition!
This is a good pair of shoes which I purchased for $85 from another retailer (note: Enwild is a great company and I would have bought from them but I had a gift card for the other retailer). Unfortunately, they only came in hazy gray. The lacing system and laces could stand an upgrade. Instead of eyelets, they would do better with loops and the flat laces should be replaced with round laces. The shoe also had a strong rubber smell which remained for about a month. However, these problems as well as the bland color, hazy gray was all they had, don't detract too much from what is otherwise a good performing shoe. It offers ample protection from rock/root strikes, a locking heel cup, and a decent insole. Overall, a nice shoe, especially for the price I paid.
Which model offers more foot cushion The X or the sawtooth II? Thanks,
