Valley of Fire State Park - Moapa Valley, Nevada

About an hour out of Las Vegas, after a brief drive in the desert, one comes across the Valley of Fire State Park, in Moapa Valley, Nevada. The red rocks, the sand, the colors -- it feels as if you're visiting another planet.
If you're seeking a diversion from Las Vegas, or are winding away on a road trip of the desert southwest, I can't recommend this place enough.
