Yep, the prank was real. Until now I still feel for Solar, you can actually see a bit of fear in her eyes when the CEO called her and then saying how BJY was good in acting. 😅 Oh, I can just imagine what went on her mind as the leader while the Queen of K-drama OSTs was saying all those things to them. Crazy!😆 But to be honest, that was a perfect way to introduce the group. Proving they can sing live just as well as their recordings, and that they're a fun group.. different from the groups debuting at that time. 😊
At the point of this video, Solar was on her last chance to be an idol. If she failed, the next step was flight attendant school. As I remember, she had applied and was admitted. So the look you see on her face at that moment is very specific. Her dream had died, and she was going to be spending the next 25 years serving pretzels to passengers at 30,000 feet.
Every person in the video was a big person in Korean music industry. They had immense faith in Mamamoo to bring in that many heavy hitters for the debut video. And yeah…prank was totally real.
"It sounds like the kind of thing that's designed to be sung on stage" This is my favorite track of theirs. Even though it was their debut song and they were still figuring out their musical direction, the song is perfect for them and holds up much better than a lot of other debut songs that try to capture something trendy. It's well composed so they've performed it hundreds of times, including lots of rearrangements. Look up "Mr ambiguous live" and you'll find plenty of different versions of them killing it on stage with a live band.
When I saw them last May I got chills. The power these 4 women have is amazing. I wanted to upload more video I took during the concert but most was ruined by me singing (trying to sing) along. Lol. There was a young couple next to my friends and I who had there small son with them, I'd say maybe 4yrs old. That little bean was singing along to every Mamamoo song. Adorable!!! I know it will be more difficult now, but I hope they tour again in the near future.
Mr Ambiguous... Love the earlier Jazz/R&B songs. They did mess with them, it was real... Everyone in the M/V are people RBW's CEO knew... He called in favours to have them in the M/V The Prank played on them... their Faces are priceless. What makes it so funny is that Baek Jiyoung IS a well know Singer and Actress in South Korea, and the members didn't reconize her. Solar was taking it the hardest, being the leader. In fact “Mr. Ambiguous” features some of K-Pop’s hottest stars, including Wheesung, K.Will, Rhymer, Bumkey, Jung Joon Young, and CNBLUE’s Lee Jong Hyun.
fun fact: moonbyul choreographed this song! also, if you like mr ambiguous, you'll definitely like piano man and ahh oop! they have very similar jazzy, funky vibes with mamamoo just being their authentic selves + moonbyul has a killer rap in ahh oop!
Try to find live performances of this, it is amazing how good they are live. This was their Debut song however, there are 3 pre-debut songs, 2 MVs, Peppermint Chocolate and Dont be happy, and a song no video heeheehaheho, these 3 all were collabs but they rerecorded all 3 and Mr Ambiguous in 2021 and if you can get videos of their 2021 live stream concert it is worth it. They were that good back then. The prank was real, they had no idea and because the actress is a very famous actress, singer and producer they really thought she was serious. Everyone on set is actually a famous person those are not random actors and they were really crying. So the comedy and stuff started day 1. They also were given no budget, so they had to do their own choreo, moonbyul is the one who came up with it, and much of the production is influenced by them, their entire career has been this way. Yes I saw them live in LA last june, they are up with the best of the best vocalists and performers because the talent is real and they are genuine
The prank is real. Kinda mean but try to see it in another way. Mamamoo must had be so nervous upon debuting. It keep piling up. They know how high RBW expectation. The prank could be the moment where the ice broke and Mamamoo able to feel a little bit relax and not screwing up on doing the MV and at the debut stage. 😊
Hi, guys, If I'm correct you didn't do any reaction for Moonbyul's 'The Second World' competition show. I think Moomoos would love that, because that's a vocal competition for rappers.
I understand why RBW thought the prank was a good idea but imo it was cruel and unusual punishment. They had already been read the riot act and told the facts of kpop life: You're not cute and pretty like other idols or tall and lean like models so your path to success has to be via good songs and performances. The girls have said they were working so hard and the pressure on them was so intense that they never had the chance to enjoy their debut. After their debut stage they didn't go out and celebrate - they went back to their rehearsal studio and worked on correcting mistakes. The MV includes includes a bunch of cameos by celebs playing the roles of director, producer, etc, including Baek Ji Young as the prankster, who was ostensibly there to give them tips and advice. I encountered a few nasty directors when I was an actor but their abuse was limited to the privacy of rehearsals. I can only imagine how humiliating it would have been to be dressed down and basically told You Suck by one of the most respected singers in the country in front of all those senior artists, everyone from their agency, and the MV crew. Btw, prior to Mr Ambiguous they released two pre-debut collab songs with MVs - Don't Be Happy and Peppermint Chocolate.
Another way to see is the prank needed for ice-breaking to Mamamoo. As they were about to debut, the nervousness kept piling up. The CEO thought it would be good for them to reduce the nervousness and relax upon debuting. 😊
Yea the prank was real. It’s really unsettling, but it seems to be a cultural thing where they like to pull pranks, and the pranks are considered good if they can get the person to cry. It seems to be common to pull pranks on people’s birthdays. One year the girls pulled a prank for Wheein’s bday where Moonbyul and Solar were telling her they didn’t think Hwasa belonged in the group and didn’t fit their style, etc. Since Hwasa was her best friend since middle school, Wheein got really upset and angry and told them if they kicked out Hwasa then she would leave, too. I guess it got kind of escalated cause apparently Hwasa came in and told them she couldn’t handle hearing Wheein get so upset anymore so she ended the prank. I’ve seen this video so many times now, though, and as much as it still makes me feel bad for them, I think in the end it may have actually helped them loosen up a bit. They were filming their debut video as the first group under RBW. The pressure on them must have felt awful. So I bet the relief that it was just a prank probably helped shake off some nerves. At least that’s what I tell myself now so I can beat watching it. 😂
That actually makes a lot of sense for the nerves. As for Wheein defending Hwasa, everybody should have already known she would turn from a puppy to a full-grown pit bull when somebody messes with her bestie. She's REALLY smart so it's hard to believe she did not realize she was getting pranked. But maybe Wheein's temper flared bad enough that it clouded her li'l noggin for a minute. That's totally understandable because Hwasa really does get those insults thrown at her constantly, starting from before their debut, and worse, even now.
@@jamescurfman3284 yea, I’d don’t remember when the prank was, so maybe it was around a time where fans were petitioning to remove her from the group. They could’ve made it seem that they started agreeing with the idea, so she bought it. Unfortunately I’ve never seen a video of it, just a fan article and a quote from where Wheein was telling the story.
@@moni13000 I saw that but my memory is SHOT these days (I am positive that I am going senile now and it started with the memory going away...). I know I saw it WAY after it had actually happened but I don't remember all the details (I am lucky to remember anything about it at all, really). I'm pretty sure I had to fast-forward through parts of it because I could not stand to see Wheenie so upset. She was MAD and could not believe she was hearing it coming from Solar and Moonbyul, of ALL people to ever talk like that about Hwasa. It must have REALLY surprised Wheein. If that video got taken down, it would be understandable but I think it could still be found if somebody wanted to look hard enough. Maybe it is still on whatever channel I originally found it on. MAYBE even on Mamamoo's official channel because it would have been a 'funny' video for Wheein's birthday. I really don't know.

@@judycasley108 yeah, I remember him saying everyone he trained from the start was debuting and he had to wait. He is an amazing leader for Exo though. Love both groups.
I think the worst prank they did was on MMMTv2 episode 4. Hwasa was so visibly upset you could see the tears in her eyes. It was kind of hard to watch until the CEO finally told her without the others knowing and they reversed it on the other members. I'm happy y'all went back to the beginning to see where it all started. If you want to see a car full of chaos look up how Mamamoo plays in the car or Mamamoo One Lucky day or Mamamoo Moo Moo Trip. Really anything with the four of them together being them especially their earlier stuff.
You already know a little bit about Hwasa, right? Not long before their debut, the CEO of RBW told the ladies not to cut their hair (maybe he had a specific look in mind for them, who knows?). Hwasa does not like being TOLD what to do so THE VERY NEXT DAY, she walked in to work rocking a BRAND NEW Pixie cut. NOBODY outright controls her. She does what she wants, she is who she is. She's the very definition of a strong, independent woman. I admire that about her and I know I am not alone there. The boss was PISSED OFF and just about fired her. She knew she was in trouble. She went home and started writing an apology, which turned into a Rap, which she later showed off. The beginning line is 'I DO ME'. That sums up a lot of her personality right there. It's also one reason why Solar had trouble as Leader. Another problem for Solar is that she was the baby of her family, she has an OLDER sister and never had younger siblings. She was used to being the baby and had NO experience in any leadership position before. And Hwasa is not the only head-strong member. Solar and Moonbyul apparently had (at least) one actual PHYSICAL fight, not just a shouting match argument. Wheein and Hwasa had to break it up and separate the two older members before they really hurt each other. This is how this group has such tight bonds, they REALLY care about each other like actual sisters might. That's what the CEO wanted and sometimes he kicked himself for it because that is indeed exactly what he got from this group who helped build his start-up company; no way in all the hells could he actually fire one of only four people who were carrying the entire project on their backs.
The clip where Solar chokes up and cries because she feels bad for the way she was with Hwasa at the start always gets to me. It was not an easy role for her at first. She has gotten so good though😊😊😊
@@Ming3484 Always, absolutely. That was really hard. BUT it also means she is Human, not perfect. And it means she really does care about the members because she felt so bad about it later. At least the members realized that she was having so much trouble with them, that took a little of the load off. After that, they know where the lines are so they don't cross them again. By the time their Seven Year Anniversary hit, they were probably THE BEST-oiled-machine in to be found among all K-Pop groups. :)
Also, AFAIK Solar wasn't originally destined to be the leader. She was thrust into the leader role when Sujeong left the project a bit before debut. So she had very little preparation for the role.
