It's amazing to see this beautiful machine still flying. My dad, Dee Cullum, spent 11 years of my childhood restoring that plane in his garage in the late sixties and early seventies in Vallejo, California. His attention to detail was excruciating. He sourced parts from as far away as South Africa, and he had to machine many of the engine parts himself (because they just weren't available); this was a lot more difficult in the pre-internet days. In 1976, we towed it out of the garage to the local airport, where the wings were attached and the real fun began. Go, NC1479er4!!
This Fairchild is 84 years old. The same engine ! This is awesome. This is flying art. What a rare thing to fly in this plane. You are an amazing and lucky man, Dewey. In a way, it’s reliving and experiencing life long ago.
Love your videos, Dewey. So well thought out, so well accompanied with commentary and uplifting music, and of course, so chock-full of amazing aviation at serious HD quality. I've been motion-sick from other guy's videos, they're shot so poorly, but yours are so well done there's never been a problem.
I designed, drew and built a 1/4 Scale KR-21 Bipe From the original Blueprints. I love the way the 24 gear squats as it unloads the flying speed, very cool.
Very nice job Dewey, We appreciate you bringing this to us. This means a lot as we are finishing up a 10.5 year restoration on our 1934 C8-C here in Orlando. We just hung the wings last weekend. There are still lots of little things left to do like wheel pants, wing gap fairings, and the top OH on the Warner engine. We hope to have it going by the end of 2019. This video provides us with inspiration overtime we watch it. Thanks, Rick
Thanks so much Rich. I keep having fun so I'll continue doing the videos. I'm glad that there are some people out there rebuilding the antique aircraft such as you. If I get in the Orlando area I would like to stop by and maybe interview and see your restoration, if that would be fine with you.
By 1938 the greasing of the rockers must have been engineered out. The 145 Warner in the 38 Ryan SCW no longer needed greasing and had a full engine cover.
I Knew i recognized Andrew! I have seen him many times at Reinbeck and his father years ago with the Tiger moth. I attend Reinbeck fly in R/C, events. SMALL WORLD !
TIM HARDIN I said that andrew is one of the most experienced WWI pilots in the world and he ferries antique airplanes all over the country. Andrew has a lot of experience in WWI and in antiques.
So this video was posted just over a year ago, on May 26,2017, correct? WWI occured b/t 07/28/1911 and 11/11/1914, and if we estimate Andrew was a young 18, in 1914. That would put him at roughly 120+ years old today, correct? I'm not being argumentative, I'm just blown away by you're saying he "ferries", as in currently active, that's why I asked if it might've been WWII. You need to do videos with him, while we're still blessed by his presents at his age and still flying as of about a year ago.
TIM HARDIN yes Tim. Sorry that can't understand. Andrew is now 120 but does look a day over 60. He still is one of the most experienced pilots flying WWI aircraft. ;)
Why is it not running with a cowling then to help stop the oil splutter? Gorgeous plane yet cleaning the screen would start to grate on me.. I love this design. I come back to this video for a dream quite often.
Dewey-- The video part of this looks quite good, and as some have mentioned, the drone shots are great. But as you mentioned about audio being "not so great"--- 1) The music volume vs. speech volume is a pain. Yes you turn down the music when talking is about to begin, but dialog is so quiet that one must keep remote in hand and constantly work the volume button. 2) When he powers up for takeoff, that is NOT a time to bring up the music! In fact it may be a time to mute it completely. Thankfully you quickly edited to an outside shot with engine sound in forefront. 3) Your headset's mic tone is very abrasive, specifically in the 2.5 to 3 kHz range. The mics you use on the ground and the music playback do not have this problem, so am pointing to the DC mics. You can find someone in your area to show you how to massage this audio while you're editing. That said, I'm sure some will be whining about choice of music, or having music at all. Piffle I say! Music is a good enhancement to many things in life, including flying, and this music is pretty nice. Just needs to be tamed in volume.

Love the Fairchild! Oh my, got a glimpse of your Travel Air back there! You're life I would die for. Straight up.
Beautiful plane! Love these types of videos. I learn so much of GA history from you.
I love these videos so much ...
Now I know what I need to replace my Cessna 140 with !!! Thanks for the inspiration.

Still a classic flying machine..praying for more meaningful flying hours

An aviation gem !
What a plane! Aircraft of the 30s have something that makes them special.
Love the golden age stuff. Even the cylinder cooling fins are works of art......
very nice, loved the drone shots!!! Super well put together video Dewey, can't wait for more of these types of videos!
Listen Peter..... I for one thought some of the ground shots were damn good too......... :-) HA!!
Agree, the overhead aerial shots from the drone of the wings with N number on the wing and the misc playing: outstanding!
Very nice drone shots. Fantastic video. Thanks.
Thanks so much. I had a great time see the plane
It was better than ok .it was awesome!
One of the best flying videos I've seen lately. Well done and thank you.
max2gain thank you so much.. I really do appreciate.

What a lovely vintage machine, you have some really good friends Dewey and those Quadcopter shots are really good.
awesome shots. the drone work and even the multiple positions at the beginning with the hangar and even the sound. top stuff man
In a word..........Beautiful! Regards John Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺 PS that's a terrific looking hanger
Thanks so much John.
This is the aviation heaven
Awsome he was coming to my town Harrisburg
Beautiful Bird - love the 30's
Thanks xPump. I like antique aircraft much more than the modern day planes.
Nice plane, congratulations
Just gets better and better at the Dewey Drome!
Jeff Boatright exactly

Love the drone intro

Beautiful video! Very fond of the F 24 series; especially the early, less well known versions. (Like your portable fueling rig too!)
+David Duganne thanks for the comment and watching the video. I'm planning on doing more video's of the older aircraft.
Yes smiling Jack definitely did have a Fairchild 24 Warner powered not a ranger engine I believe
Didn't this engine originally have a cowling on it from the factory?
I take it that this is not the Fairchild 24 from Hagerstown?
At ~9:15 mark Dewey mentioned a ferry pilot that was a pilot in WWI. Did he mean WWII? Or did he mean he ferry's WWI a/c around?

The landing gear has no spring action?

The C8A models had completely open rockers so they threw even more grease.
Why is there a portapotty behind the hanger?
Because that is where you have to go to the restroom. LOL.. I don't have the luxury of all those nice things :)
All that money for antique airplanes, but none for indoor plumbing. Good to see you got your priorities in the right order!

No one wants to hear the music over the sound of the airplane.
No one can hear the sound of the airplane. So I guess you want to hear wind noise but I'm sure you all ready know that.

Great Plane 😊 don't like the music 😢 especially when it's louder than the Engine 😢
Wow! Nice.... Please stop ruining videos with MUSIC! I wanted to hear the engine and every little nuance.
Nice! However it would have been nice to se A LOT MORE pre flight start up and take off control information. Way too little how to.
que lastima que caguen esos videos con la musica.
Can do without the 🎶
This music is stupid
Lose the stupid music!
