As a huge habs fan I hated Quebec and Boston and wasn't crazy about the Whalers BUT I respected them. They had some really, really good teams in those years and they gave both the Bruins and Montreal fits. But they never seemed to have the goalie who could get them over the hump. I miss that organization, I miss the building and the atmosphere-great fans.
They had Liut for much of their playoff years, but they needed 2nd line scoring depth and just didn't have it.
You are right. My Bs always beat them in the playoffs but it was always a good series. They played good d and had timely scoring. I can't even think of a goalies name who played for Hartford during this time.
Courtnall's goal goes in the record books as unassisted, but Roy deserved an assist.
Obviously not, once Whitmore got control of the puck, this neutralized Roy's pass up the ice.
Whitmore sees Roy handle the puck..."pff i can do that too, just watch me"...DOH!
Whitmore really blew that one, wowsers.
Nice vid!! Do you have all 6 games of the 89 Stanley Cup final? I loved the Habs as a kid & would love to see them. Also the 5 games of the 93 final would be epic!
Kay Whitmore going Kay Whitmore. And Russ courtnall doing Russ courtnall things against the Whalers.
I had to look it up but I thought he was a pretty highly thought of draft pick and sure enough, he was picked in the second round and the 3rd goalie picked in the draft (Sean Burke was the first one taken just ahead of him). But he never developed into a number one kind of guy and that was the only thing (in my opinion) that stopped the Whalers from being among the NHL's big boys-they never had a world class goalie. (*Mike Liut was technically a world class goalie but he was already almost 30 by the time he got to Hartford and by then he was having to face Patrick Roy just to get out of the division).
Here in America, it was on SportsChannel America.
The fourth post-season meeting between these two teams and the fourth time the Canadiens disposed of the Whalers.
I bet if Kay Whittmore could of replayed that, he would of played the puck back instead of ahead. Montreal had some really good if not great players. Today, their team is not very good. I cant wait until they become great again.
You got the rest of this game?
Whitmore: DANG IT!!! If you're goal tender TEND the GOAL!! Shit happens.....
Tough way to lose a series. But that was more than a capable MTL team! Atta boy Rusty!
Et pourtant on disait de Roy qu'il était bon tant qu'il n'essayait pas de manier la rondelle.
Terrible way to end a series.
wtf was the goalie thinking ? Courtnall an Bobby Smith . Two of Savard's best trades
Kay Whitmore was on something. You can't do that in overtime in the playoffs.
@@daboys1215 Watched it again, French commentators, Typical. All they can talk about is how Roy originated the play . But Damm , Mtl. had an amazing team then though ! In any other city there would be a banner in the rafters .
@@daveyboy_ Roy did originate the play. Whitmore was still an idiot for doing that though.
@@daboys1215 My point was . That there was more to the goal than that but in Mtl francophone reporters always pull that crap. They've been doin' it since the days of Richard !
Do you have the links of the match in full? If yes, can I give you my e-mail address so that you can send it to me?
Oops, Kay Whitmore...
The old Hartford civic center,
That year the Habs had a power house team. But Calgary was hungrier for the cup.
I'm a Habs fan and I've always felt that the Habs team that lost to Calgary in '89 was better than the one that beat Calgary in '86.
Calgary spent most of this season in first place overall, so their Cup win was no fluke.
@FischerFan I totally agree. I think the '89 Habs were better than the '86 and '93 squads that won the Cup. In '89, Montreal just had the misfortune of running into a great Calgary team. They would have beaten anyone else.
@@briancusack4386I remember five years earlier, in 1984, something that my older brother told me while I was a passenger in his van. He had developed an affinity for the Oilers. Even though the Islanders were the defending Cup champions, he advised me, 'Don't sell that quarter-final result short! Calgary just MIGHT BE the second-best team in the League!'.
@@FischerFan Your brother was onto something. In '84, I still think the Islanders were the second best team in hockey. In '86, though, Calgary was right up there with the likes of Edmonton, Montreal, and Philly.
Even though Montreal did not win the cup that year, it was an excellent season. #1 Calgary met #2 Montreal in the Stanley Cup finals. It's not often that the leagues two best teams meet up.
