  • Dating to 1944-45, these silent films contain a record of Luftwaffe pilot kills over Europe. These kind of "gun camera" films were used both to document and verify kills and probables, but also to assess the techniques used in the dogfights.
The film contains various encounters beginning with an attack by an Fw-190 on a Lagg 5, or Lavochkin La-5 This was one of the Soviet Air Force's most capable types of warplane, able to fight German designs on an equal footing. In this case however the Soviet pilot was shot out of the sky.
At 1:25 is footage of the shoot down of a P-38 Lightning by an Fw-190. At 2:30, a B-24 Liberator is attacked by a Bf-109 / Me-109. At 3:34, an attack by an Fw-190 on a Boeing B-17. This approach is typical, from the rear and aimed at the engines and tail gunner. At 4:29 and 4:50, 5:19, 5:55, 6:17, more Fw-190 attacks on the B-17. The attack at 7:43 is very close, likely indicating that the tail gun on the bomber was put out of action. Around 7:42 you can see a large piece of aircraft depart (or possibly someone bailing out through a roof hatch?) At 7:54, 8:39, 9:37, Fw-190 vs. B-24 Liberator. At 9:56, in an astonishing sequence, a Liberator takes a severe beating and is wracked with explosions of cannon fire.
The aircraft that were being used in the film are the FW-190 and the Messerschmitt Bf 109. The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 Würger (English: Shrike) is a German single-seat, single-engine fighter aircraft designed by Kurt Tank in the late 1930s and widely used during World War II. Along with its well-known counterpart, the Messerschmitt Bf 109, the Focke-Wulf 190 Würger became the backbone of the Luftwaffe's Jagdwaffe (Fighter Force). The twin-row BMW 801 radial engine that powered most operational versions enabled the Fw 190 to lift larger loads than the Bf 109, allowing its use as a day fighter, fighter-bomber, ground-attack aircraft and, to a lesser degree, night fighter. The Bf-109 was a German World War II fighter aircraft that was the backbone of the Luftwaffe's fighter force. The Bf 109 first saw operational service in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War and was still in service at the dawn of the jet age at the end of World War II in 1945. It was one of the most advanced fighters of the era, including such features as all-metal monocoque construction, a closed canopy, and retractable landing gear. It was powered by a liquid-cooled, inverted-V12 aero engine. The G-6 variant (indicated in the title cards in the film) was nicknamed by Luftwaffe personnel as Die Beule ("the bump/bulge") because of the cowling's characteristic, bulging covers for the breeches of the 13 mm (.51 in) MG 131 machine guns, with the separate Beule covers eliminated by the time of the G-10 model's introduction of a subtly reshaped upper cowling.

As a teenager, in the mid-80’s, through family in Germany, I became friends with one of these German fighter pilots who showed me photographic stills like this. He survived being shot down 3 times, only to be struck and killed by a drunk driver. He never saw the 90’s.

Adolf Galland's book "The First and the Last" sheds a ton of light on the successes and failures of the Luftwaffe. He spends a bit of time explaining the different theories on how best to shoot down bombers. An excellent read if one wishes to dive beyond these videos and what these fighter pilots were up against.

The second half of the video is pretty much just Sturmbocke units in action. They were flying modified FW-190A with extra armor. In combat they assemble behind the bombers in line abreast formation and charge straight in, keep firing as long as possible and only break away at the last moment.

08:56 to 9:36 A clear example of a Sturmbocke attack. V-shaped attack, each Fw 190 targetting a bomber to split the defensive fire of the gunners and prevent them concentrating on a particular attacker. Some of the 190s are still carrying their drop tanks, which you can see when they break to the left. The 190A-8\R2 had armoured cockpit panels, cockpit, and cowling with formidable armament. It allowed the slow approach from behind but they still had to sit through a minute or so of American gunfire.

Indeed interesting. Stats have proven that only a small percentage of Allied combat infantry actually fired their weapons in battle, I wonder if the same applies to air gunners? So I would imagine that the same was true for a lot of gunners. But there's plenty of evidence that at least some gunners tried to shoot down German planes. Especially if its an fw-190A-8 which had terrible high altitude performance. Also, there is a lot of shooting going on you just can’t see the tracers because it’s old film. You can definitely spot the sparks where the bullets land on some of the bombers.

Attacking astern was likely the most common as the Luftwaffe pilots were often having to climb and chase the bombers. Given the opportunity they would I think have preferred head on or beam attacks. Best of all, I think, gain height above and behind enemy bombers, then zoom climb and attack from below allowing target to cross field of fire.
Despite the damage being inflicted on bombers the Germans were massively disadvantaged, mostly I would suggest by poor radar and vectoring onto enemy formations.
This contrasts with the RAF during the Battle of Britain; in theory they had far poorer aircraft and aircrew yet enjoyed much greater success because of very effective radar and aerial organisation of forces.

I think "captured" is a more appropriate word. We probably gave them back, post war. And copies are fairly easy to make.

Arc Trooper lol all I did was scroll through the comments and could only find one which still means you’re blowing it out of proportion. Oh and I’m actually quite interested in these videos as I haven’t really looked at gun camera footage from German pilots before. I’m not a “Hollywood” fanboy or whatever. I’m just pointing out that you’re on a which hunt here.

I think you'll find that the overwhelming majority of all ammunition ever fired in war never hit anything.
