Beautiful toy, I wish I could find more toys that are that size, most are either too big or too small for me.

fabric backed/impregnated natural rubber would be my bet, not a massive fan of super stretchy stuff so the fabric on the inside would limit the amount of stretch and maybe(?) increase durability

although i am sure it is sturdy and stretchy enough to prevent bursting, i don't think this is something for me, i don't like it if my toys stretch like that, it always makes me scared of them bursting, but i still love how it looks (and to be honest, i am not good enough in repairing like you could, even though i always watch your vids on it while repairing my toys, they always stay to be leaking a bit, but they stay full longer with those repairs i learned from your videos than before i watched them, seam splits are the hardest for me though)

Really useful review, thank you. Like I was pretty nervous about the wear of the material but that seems to be fine if you keep it in check. And I personally really like the color scheme over the standard black and white

latex inflatables are really nice, I've got a really nice and biiig inflatable dragon. I think this one is made with just the dry powder option, but Idk from which shops this has been purchased, since I only bought it off from someone. BUt realllly nice, I also can recommend such inflatables to anyone.

It definitely doesn't hurt to go with a 1mm latex sheet for a rideable like this, but I've had good results with inflatables made from the standard .40mm stuff. I have a few wearable inflatable tails that were made with .40 mm sheet, and they hold up surprisingly well overall! I've sat and lied upon them many times, and they just stretch and give with no signs of popping or tearing.
Oh, you had it chlorinated! I heard it makes the rubber less elastic and makes repairs more difficult. Not exactly ideal for inflatables, I assumed. That's why I chose to stick with silicone coatings that could be washed off if need be. I just might reconsider after seeing your experience with the whale!
That's an interesting observation about wanting the tail on your whale to be a separate chamber. I have a similar issue with the fox tail that I commissioned LatexCatfish to make. Every other latex tail I have uses a second layer of latex for the white tip, leaving the main material underneath to give some extra support. Latex Catfish cut the tip off and glued the white tip onto the end instead, and now that particular tail tip expands outward in a similar fashion to the whale tail when weight is put onto it. There's an obvious stretch ring around where the two pieces are glued together, which bugs me quite a bit more than I thought it would. Again, my two other tails don't do that at all. It stretches out much more uniformly.
LatexCatfish is also notorious for having terrible turnaround times. The few items I've commissioned from them took literal months before they started on them, and each time I had to email them a complaint before they'd even add my order to their queue. The order status on their site is complete bogus up until they actually start working on it, I've learned.

The black and white rubber whale I show briefly is made from 0.4-mm-thick latex. It's definitely plenty sturdy, but I can't really lay on it without laying through it. If you get what I mean. It just bulges out around me. That is unless I really inflate it a lot.
The chlorination's biggest downsides are really the appearance changes. It yellows lighter colors and lightens darker colors. You can see the difference with the balloons. The silicone polish looks the best in my opinion. The chlorinated one really has that industrial inner tube look.
The chlorination treatment made the balloon a bit stiffer, but that played into the same reason I wanted the thicker latex. I imagine very thin latex might be negatively impacted.
I don't think chlorinated latex being more difficult to repair is too big a deal. I don't really feel I am going to damage this whale and if I do I can always locally remove the surface finish. The chlorinated layer is very thin.
I had to email Latex Catfish and ask if it had shipped yet before my whale got placed in queue. That was when they told me they didn't have the colors I wanted.

@@HeathDragon Thanks for the insight! Never considered options like heaver gauge latex or chlorination being a good way to stiffen the inflatable up a bit. Will be attempting making a wearable tail of my own fairly soon, so I have a few more ideas and considerations in mind now.

Very interesting video thanks. I agree that the stretchiness and bounciness of latex inflatables sets them apart from vinyl. Why do you not inflate it to a greater degree of stretch, such that you don't sink through it to the floor when you ride on it? I guess you don't want to risk damaging or popping it, but I suspect at 1.0mm thickness it could cope with much more stress and it sure would give a huge bouncy ride!

    • @HeathDragon
      @HeathDragon  2 роки тому +1

So far, I am very happy that I can lay on it and it holds me off the floor without issue. I would be concerned if trying to inflate it enough to hold me up while sitting on it would leave it with a permanent set. Similar to how a balloon typically doesn't deflate back to its original size after being stretched a fair bit. I doubt it would break, but I imagine it would be permanently stretched. I remember seeing someone way over inflate one and it didn't return to its proper shape. Also, I don't really like how overinflating it makes it kind of lose its whale shape and just gradually becomes more of a big ball as air is added.

Yeah wery good material for play and enjoy. Try making from 1.2 mm soft rubber. Rubber like inner tube rubber. That's material is harder than latex. Good for riding. Latex material is soft. So soft. Rubber are much better.

Imagine if Heath here ordered an Inflatable dragon but with the chlorinated Latex. it would probably last for centuries. I mean for me, if I had the money, I would buy a chlorinated finished inflatable dragon and just play with it endlessly. Granted, there is probably a no sharp objects warning somewhere that could puncture the material if it's maxxed stretchiness is hit. other than that, I hope heath can request, if he has the money, an inflatable Dragon made of Latex (Chlorinated). heck who knows, he might replace his entire Inflatable Arsenal with Latex (Chlorinated) inflatables. Love the videos also Heath!

Great toy, looks like lots of fun. When you say it's 'expensive', how does that compare to, say, a identical whale made of 0.4mm PVC from Hongyi? Double? Triple? More?

Thanks for doing this review! I'm no stranger to latex clothing, but I admit I was very curious as to how the material would work for a toy like this, so it was great to hear your thoughts on it.
I've been very tempted to get one of these whales for myself but Latex Catfish have a very mixed reputation - whether what you pay for is any good or not, seems to depend on who they task to make it and how they are feeling on that day! It sounds like your experience was relatively positive though, which is good to hear.

    • @HeathDragon
