Demon Hunter are the kings of slow-burn metal songs! When i first listened to this album, i thought that it was decent, but the more i listened, the better the songs get.
I'm not gonna lie, y'all... Even though I've always liked Demon Hunter's power ballads, I've always enjoyed the heavier tracks more. At first, this song hit me like most of the other primary power ballads of each Demon Hunter album has... slowed me down, and I just kind of waited patiently for the next face-melting track. But then as I kept the album on repeat, this one started to grow on me. It kept growing and growing... and then I finally get a full layout of the lyrics here in this video... man, what a powerful message. Hit me like a ton of bricks. "For this day your pain is Mine / So let Me carry the weight / Father / Forevermore / In dark, in light, remember me / Searching / Find in the Name / The truth, the right and take the lead" That's some good stuff, y'all.
Blake Douglas I agree with you :), I love the heavy stuff Demon Hunter makes that when played a little to loud, it might cause structural damaged to buildings large and small XD. The Lyrics in this song are amazing :), I personally have been listening to the more mellow tracks lately rather then the more intense stuff I love :). Patience has really been speaking to me lately and I keep hitting the Repeat button so much I might be wearing a spot in the glass of my tablet XD. God bless :)
Blake Douglas does this album have any heavy tracks ? I want to listen to their new stuff but I honestly feel like getting to the heavy part right away. this album gets a little too religious for me
Peter Malchuk I completely agree, man. It is good stuff. I really enjoyed Patience as well. I have since also really come to love The End and Slight the Odds. The End has a SICK riff but is still obviously clean vocals and whatnot... it is crazy how they've won me over with the "not as heavy" stuff. +Deadlypenguin Hey man, I completely get that. Those 3 tracks Peter listed are definitely the heaviest, and are great ones to boot. As far as being "too religious," I get why you might feel that way too. Ryan's lyrics are always heaped in Christian metaphors and allusion, even when they are about something ordinary on the surface, because his dependence on Jesus and His is the foundation of everything. That's why is speaks to Christians like myself so well. BUT... With that being said, almost all of the songs on Outlive are, by Ryan's own words, not directly about being a Christ follower, per se. For instance, this song in this video we're on right now is actually about his new daughter (in total, 4 of 5 of the band guys became first time parents since the last album, Extremist!). The End is about Ryan being paranoid that his daughter would stop breathing during the night. One of the heavier tracks, Cold Blood, is about Ryan's disdain for social media and how it is taking meaningful interaction from us. Another heavy track, One Less, is about Ryan not wanting to be a hyper religious, fundamental Christian who won't hang out with and love those who don't know Jesus (in other words, Ryan doesn't want to be in only a Christian bubble where he doesn't reach out to people, maybe like you, who aren't religious), because that is the opposite of what Jesus taught us... Jesus taught us to spend time with and love the marginalized, the people who don't look or think or talk like us. That is all paraphrased from the song meanings Ryan wrote that are included in the Deluxe Edition. Hope that helps my man, and happy head-bangin!
I can respect that. I love the album but personally I don't know if they will ever do a song as good as "just breath" again. in contrast another favourite of mine is "dead flowers". I don't care much for religion ( personal opinion, I'm not going to force it on anyone obviously ) but I do love the sound of some good metal!
These guys never fail to impress. Their releases usually catch me off guard, but I get so hooked on them, refusing to listen to anything else for a couple of months. In high school my buddy had their first album and said they were an "average metal band". I didn't start listening until Summer of Darkness and have been a massive fan since.
I remember getting Outlive in the mail and listening to it for weeks after I got it. From start to end, the album is solid, but this song sticks out to me as something special and emotionally touching, almost spiritual in a way in just how beautiful it is. I listened to it again recently and suddenly found myself listening to it more than almost all the other songs on the album. I think it's because of the fact that Ryan Clark just became a father, along with the other members of the band, and it hit me in a way that almost none of their other songs ever could. Ryan said that the song, along with a number of other songs from Outlive, were focused on his newly discovered fatherhood and his experiences going through it. I've always wanted to be a father, a good father, who will always be there for my child, no matter what odds are stacked against me. Whether I adopt or I have one with my girlfriend (whom I want to make my wife), I want to be the father to my kids my dad was to me. He was there for me from the very beginning, pulling me from an alcoholic mother, got me into music, supported my dreams, and stood up for me when I couldn't stand up for myself. When he passed, I felt a piece of me die along with him. I never got to talk to him much after I left Illinois. So this song reminds me that I might be in Ryan's place one day and I need to be prepared to sacrifice so much I never knew I was ready to sacrifice to be a dad. I absolutely love the chorus, too. "When the loneliness ends, Will the panic begin? I never know... Are we ever the same? All we need is a way, Where do we go?" Upon hearing that, I sat back, thought about the real meaning of the song, and put it next to what I wanted my future life to be as a father to my son or daughter, and cried. It's...sobering, yet incredibly scary to think about. I don't know if I'll even be ready when the time comes, but Demon Hunter made the thought just a little more comforting with "One Step Behind." Thank you, Ryan, and all the members of Demon Hunter. Thank you so much.
This is such an amazing ballad, and one of the reasons why demon hunter provides variety in a metal album. these songs provide a place of rest in the album, and make for great balance to a record. When I get the honor of seeing them hey incorporated this kind of thing in there performance which added to the level of depth to there concert.
Martin Rogers I got this album's box set, which came with a book of lyrics and explanations from Ryan. He said he wrote this song to let his newborn daughter know he would always be right behind her on her journey through life. It was my favorite track on the album even before reading that, but reading those words have me chills.
I was going to say this! Exactly. Driving I teared up. It's the mix of the melody, the message of melencholy and a kind of saving or savior to help you that last day. The right mix for tears
For some reason a lot of people seem to forget that this album exists. It may not be their strongest outing, but man it has some killer tunes that dig their way into your earhole and stay there forever. Demon Hunter can seemingly do almost any style of metal and nail it without making much effort. They seriously need more recognition than they have now.
My first son is going to be born any day now, and for the last couple weeks I've been thinking about this song a lot. Everything from the tune to the lyrics always impacted me on a deep emotional level, but now even more so.
This song is song is about coming together in union, specifically with our good and perfect Father. When life crushes us, he catches the pieces and rebuilds us into somethings we haven't seen yet.
What have the artists said about the song? “In the midst of writing this record, my wife and I had our first child. We named her Ryan after myself. This song is for her. It’s true what they say: Nothing can truly prepare you for parenthood. It is, on one hand, a simultaneous demand of everything you’ve learned in life - patience, understanding, fear, doubt, trust, faith, sympathy, hope, frustration, joy, etc., and on the other hand, unlike anything you’ve experienced before. Bringing a child into the world in this day and age can be terrifying. I’ve seen just how much the world has changed since I was young, and it’s easy to be fearful for the years to come. I wrote this song to encourage her, to caution her, and to let her know that I’m always close."
Yeah. I agree and that's a noble intention. She'll have an art piece that something she can lean on. I have also learned that very seldom do our action have isolated affects. He wrote this for his daughter, being a picture of a good father. In that spirit of his God given intent, God can use this element to tell a story about our good and perfect Father, that he can be a father to the fatherless, all the orphans of the world; that He will carry the burden weight. Christ wasn't carrying His cross (what did Jesus do to deserve a cross?) He was carrying ours. If something happens to Ryan then same way that my mom died back about 9 years ago, she'll have to lean on her Heavenly Father. I fell into a life that was completely different from the shelter I grew up in and God had to fill the gap and be all that He said He would be in my life. The events in the bible are real events that are historically recorded, and happened in a way to draw a lesson that we can all learn from, otherwise whats the point in reading it?
I started listening to Demon Hunter in 2011 after my cousin died of a heart attack found out a couple years later the Demon Hunter was one of his favorite bands after listening to One Step behind my jaw dropped because my daughter's name is Cadence and the lyrics are very relevant to the situation this song lets me know that God is definitely playing a part in my life as well as my cousins before he died as he renewed his faith eight days before he passed I would love to know where Ryan Clark came up with the idea of this song
