Zeelugt squatters struggling, can’t afford to build on their house lots

- These squatters at Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo have obtained their house lots from the government and they are desperate to move but they cannot afford to do so. Shaneeza and her family have been squatting there for the past nine years because they could not find the money to pay their rent. There was only one house there at the time. She works as a sweeper/cleaner and her husband, who has medical complaints, does weeding work and is barely earning. She approached The Shabna Show and we contacted donors who are willing to come on board. They need some assistance from the Men on Mission in Region Three but have not received a positive response from them as yet. Her neighbour, Gomattie and her family are also living in impoverished conditions. They have already paid for her land but has not identified it as yet. Other residents, like Sarah, Vanessa, Noreen and Shayam also share their heartbreaking story of poverty. In the case of Vanessa, a single mother, she has four and she is also taking care of three of her siblings in a tiny house she is renting. She does a part-time job, and like other residents, she cleans shrimp for an extra income. Let help these people have a comfortable life. So much land space we have in Guyana and yet still it's hard for the government to help these people promptly, all the government is doing is rapidly inviting investors to take up our living space , I do hope everyone get the relief they deserve, and I hope after the help these people work and take it from there because poverty will fallow if you continue to lead it.... it's a pain yo see how people are suffering in Guyana .....
It's shocking to see how many people of the Guyanese (700K) population is indigent. This problem cannot be solved by being regularized. The question is financial sustainability. The means to find gainful employment to afford the monthly payments to banks for the houses that the government is giving out. Right now the people can't even afford food to stay alive. The government is doing the right thing, but more needs to be done from a socioeconomic point of view. A well balanced data driven approach is needed. Thank you Shabna for what you are doing. I will continue to help whenever I can.

Excellent work Shabna. Happy you're bringing people's plight to the forefront. I believe there are bigger underlying issues. Prolonged social trauma has devastated so many folks for far too long. All's not lost once the helper and saviour role can be implemented.

Hi Shabna. Please continue to show case the plight of these poor people who are really struggling. Hope the people in authority take note. In Guyana, you have the very rich, the middle class who are getting richer. Then the very poor. Shabna, the best gift you can offer some of these people is someone to talk to them about family planning. Why procrate when they are so poor, especially if they are single parents? The government have a lot of money coming in now so they can help? There are a lot of empty houses along the coast. Can't they be allowed to live there?

The plight of these people needs to be brought to the attention of the government, there is so much land that small parcels can be allocated to help the situation. Some of the oil revenue from Exon mobil can be utilized to help the poor as a policy. The dire conditions of the poor reflects the integrity and humanity of the government, surely part of the oil revenue can be used to help if there is political will. Activist need to badger the government and insist they help the dire poor.

There is some talk of Guyana becoming the next Dubai I am sure the citizens of Dubai are not living in such a deplorable and disgraceful state. Instead of asking these very poor citizens to buy lands and build houses why don’t the government build range houses instead and use their monthly payments as payment against their mortgages? As someone who grew up poor it's okay to be poor but have respect for yourself dont give your self to any and every man just because your poor educate yourself and find someone who values you enough to get married and make you his wife if not then he isnt the right person go back to school it is never too late to go back to school These young women need to use contraceptive's i am a nursing student i am 25 years old and dont have any kid's ,that girl is my age and has so many little kids and pregnant too for young women they need to be educated especially about sexual reproduction especially these poverty striken homes
You can be poor ,doesn't mean you have to get your self pregnant that make thing's worst, these young women need to educate themselves go back to school, without an education you would always be nothing and you would always be struggling due to poverty

I Live in this area, by extension the street these people got house lots, but they like to live here they get the handouts. the mom sends the kids to beg every day, when the kids get the money the used it to consume alcohol. you cant walk here at night prone to get rob.

These are some real horrendous stories to listen to and to see how these people are living. The road is very dangerous for those kids. I honestly hope and pray that they get the necessary help that they need in order to relocate. The one woman that has paid for the land and hasn't receive it she should go in with her receipt and other transactions and get some information on what's happening. Once she paid she should have the land. Why did they took the money without providing her the place? Thats not right! Once there's hope there's a way. The government needs to drop the price for low income house lots
Give free lots to the squatters and let them use their limited financial resource to built a house. So they buy lots and they don’t have peanuts to built a house. They also have a lot of social problems. Unfortunately, this is a world wide problem, sister. And poverty is as old as religion. Even that has been trying to resolve it. Show the video to the government. Guyana have oil, give money to the poor and needy and stop the corruption. Your video didn’t highlight anything new. But it’s a situation that has grown very fast over a short period of time. During the Burnham administration, I have never seen such degree of poverty. It was hardly noticeable. The government needs to create jobs. Sugar was a lot of ppl’s lifeline and that footprint is almost gone from the country. Was it replaced by anything else. Just incompetence! Thanks to UA-cam, the plight of ppl can be shown to the world. However, it’s the government’s responsibility to ensure its citizens are well taken care of! Good luck.
