- Ireland, Spain and Norway said earlier this week that they would recognise a Palestinian state, which does not exist in practice. This prompted United States President Joe Biden to reiterate his belief that a Palestinian state should be achieved through negotiations, not unilateral recognition. Dr Simon Frankel Pratt, political science lecturer from the University of Melbourne, tells CNA’s Asia First that this reflects a growing dissatisfaction among Israel’s partners with the stagnated state of the peace process. Dr Pratt believes other European nations will recognise a Palestinian state and increase the diplomatic pressure on Israel.

You are clearly not neutral but have chosen to declare Palestine as a state without a clear understanding of where its borders are and an understanding that they will renounce their clear intent to remove Israel. Israel will return to a negotiation once their hostages are returned and these two commitments are recognised. Palestinians have been offered a state at least five times since 1948 but have chosen to say NO as it would be predicated on recognition of Israel's right to exist and maintain its sovereignty over its internationally created and recognised state.

Before recognizing Palestine, these countries should insist on release of hostages and there could be peace. Palestinians have to first accept the existence of Israel before anything else for two states solution.
