After he died, Tyson himself transferred that title back to Ali. Everyone now considers ali the goat, not because he had the best boxing record, but because he was the O.G. The reason why being the O.G. is important is because if you took any boxer today and took them back in time, they'd probably lose to the champ. Simply because of less knowledge overall about the sport, which equates to less of everything else relevant to the sport. So if we took Tyson back in time to fight Ali, he would lose. @@michael43567 Rogan was saying that Hawk was like Armstrong in that people who know very little about skateboarding/biking at least know Hawk/Armstrong. How could an underrated person be the face of their own sport? Sure skateboarding isn't as main stream as boxing or golf but saying Hawk is 'underrated' would not be the word I would use. I don't rate athletes across different sports, that's like comparing apples to oranges. Is Tupac underrated with respect to other genres? Possibly, but my point is that you've categorized someone into a bigger category that it just seems meaningless and frankly, pretentious.
I grew up around skateboarding and Tony hawk was always a household name to us, Even bigger when the games were released i still play pro skater 5 from time to time it brings me back to the good days where me and friends would get together and build our own half pipes / skate rails etc, We had a amazing time at one point we got the local council to get us planning permission on a plot of land near the football parks. We did everything from packing people's shopping in supermarkets to BBQ's and party get togethers as a small group of friends we raised £40,000 within 10 months towards the total cost of our skate park which 15 years on we see kids enjoy what we dreamed of which is a blessing, Tony hawk had and still has a huge influence on us all

On some real shit, growing up as a snowboarder, we were always treated like the misfits. Posh people skii'd, young people double laced up on one blade. So, we lived, eat, breathed snowboarding. When those sloops melted, we had nothing to do so we connect with skateboarding and their version of rebel life. So, when it was warmer months , we were slamming Tony Hawk pro skater and tring to learn how to skateboard (Not the same, I was terrible) the X games in the late 90's was PUSHING boundaries every year. I remember were I was in 1999 the day the 900 happened. It was fucking magical when it did. For a second we all was not sure if he stayed on and then replay, we all went nuts!! That 900 in the summer pushed us to bigger and more technical tricks in the winter. Tony Hawk is a boss!! He is a living legend in all extreme sports.

Jordan, Ali, Woods, Phelps, Bolt, Mayweather, Messi, LeBron, Kobe, Tyson I could name 20 more legends that get more praise & recognition that Tony Hawk. Shit Joe called him the "lance Armstrong of skating" meaning he feels the name Tony Hawk doesn't hold enough weight
Living the actual dream 😂
Literally
I grew up around skateboarding and Tony hawk was always a household name to us, Even bigger when the games were released i still play pro skater 5 from time to time it brings me back to the good days where me and friends would get together and build our own half pipes / skate rails etc, We had a amazing time at one point we got the local council to get us planning permission on a plot of land near the football parks. We did everything from packing people's shopping in supermarkets to BBQ's and party get togethers as a small group of friends we raised £40,000 within 10 months towards the total cost of our skate park which 15 years on we see kids enjoy what we dreamed of which is a blessing, Tony hawk had and still has a huge influence on us all
Now that we have a skateboarder, can we get Travis pastrana? Would be great to get some X games legends.
Agreed, Matt Hoffman also!
Yes to this fuck yes
'Gleaming the Cube' was a hugely influential movie to me, I was 8😍 thanks for that awesome memory Tony and making that movie incredible!!
Did no one catch that eye brow go flying at 9:58 ?? 🤣
wasnt that when houses costed like $75
😂😂
Ahahah
In that area of San Diego. 100-150k
That’s why his dad call that an “invest” imagine how much those are rn
Who remembers gaming on the sony Playstation killing combos lol game was so unrealistic but jesus was it a GREAT GAME! I remember fighting over the controller with my big sister lmao damn time flys
spine transfer in and out of the cathedral in Underground 2
@ArmchairWarrior oddly enough I never played on that. But i do remember golden eye on N64
There hasn't been a controller quite like N64 since
constantly manualing to keep the combo rolling lol
@King Richard the Lionheart for some reason i cant picture any of the levels except this one where you in like a parking garage and you roll down into a a half pipe and then you can spine transfer into a second on on the other side . I would use the chest code no gravity and just do impossible spins lol dam i miss being a kid !! Nit have to pay bills or go to work lol i cant belive im saying this but i miss middle and high school or maybe I just miss having a social life now that im married with three kids and a mortgage lol...its sad when your ten year old has more plans on a friday night then me unless you could my plans of doing lundry and cooking dinner amd catching last night new episode of 48 hours lmmfao damn getting old sucks
Jesus loves you.
This podcast with Tony is gonna blow up 🌋 🌋 🌋
He’s definitely got that Tom Delonge San Diego talking style.
Idk he’s way cooler than delonge
North county vibes.. I grew up in North county, born in Mexico and sound white*if it makes sense* as fuck lol
Super.
@Anthony Swiss lol
alejsil1 I grew up in Fallbrook. Tony Hawks parents apparently have lived there.
For Us skaters in little old Perth 1990 this guy was our hero .Legend of the sport
Someone actually saying can you do that trick to Tony Hawk 😂😂
He’s actually not a super good street skater. He does insane shit on the ramps but apparently struggles with street lines
His solo skate on Gleaming the Cube was ART
I met Tony Hawk in the late 80's at javernicks ramp in Loveland Colorado. He was super talented and nice to us kids watching
Even though I stopped skating years ago this man will remain one of my heroes. Shred on Tony.
“Bro theres no way you’re girlfriend has her own house” “she saves bro, she saves”
A man of culture i see
Hawk was THE SKATER as a kid growing up in the 80's. Hosoi and Cabellero were always my favs but Hawk's talent was undeniable. That's when P&P was running the industry. Every skater I knew had a Tony Hawk board. Those Bones Brigade tapes back then were like gold.
Tony hawk is a legend man.
Tony just seems like most humble, cool, and wholesome dude. I’ve never ragged on celebrities/athletes for *needing* to be a role model, but when it naturally happens, it deserves props. Dude has inspired millions and is still so chill. Thanks for the interview Joe, this was great.
%100 fact vert skaters were shit on when street took over. i was there lol
Street
Honestly seems like he never got old , love this guy
i've never had any interest in skating but man do i love tony. he's such a great guy
Skating was such a major part of youth culture amongst suburban kids in the late 90's and early 2000's. Every kid I knew played the Tony Hawk games even if they didn't skate.
Tony Hawk was my favorite game growing up. Nobody could beat me 😂
I skate street but I still love tony hawk like cmon who don’t love this guy. He seems so down to earth like somebody you could just sit down with and have a good talk and shit I gotta watch this whole ep
I wasn’t even into skating but tony hawk was so cool I had to get his stuff and try to become a skater 😂
Grew up in Santa Barbara where Powell Peralta factory was. Remember seeing a Bones Brigade Demo on Vert Ramps at Mackenzie Park in 87 or 88 I think. Never got that good at skating, but just want to thank Tony, Lance, Mike Mctwist Mcgill, Steve Caballero, Tommy G and all the rest for the good memories. You guys defined the greatest time of my life. Hope to meet some of you guys somewhere someday.
I know I’m not the only one who thinks Tony Hawk looks like Bill Gates’ cooler little brother.
Just looking at Bill Gates when he was in high school makes me want to slam his head into a computer.
Tony hawk is low key the biggest bad ass.so humble.such a great skater.legend.would looooove to meet him.
He has shown that if you hone your craft, do what you really genuinely love. The money will come regardless.
Its soooooo fascinating watching legends talk about themselves, especially when they're people as humble and interesting and engaging as Tony Hawk,
I remember being a little kid going to the local mcdonald’s all the time just to play PS1 back when they had the Nintendo 64’s in the kids place. Those were really the days!
It’s so awesome to hear this year’s later after being in that group of kids who were young and picking up skating as the THPS games came around. Amazing story, glad he stayed with his life’s love
That Boy Tony Hawk a damn Skateboard savant!! "The "Rain Man" of the sport!! I will never forget that first menu screen instrumental from the first game!!
Damn. Genuine people stand out so easily. He is beyond humble for what he has achieved.
Bones brigade and power peralta where the pinnacle of 80s skating. I bought so much merch from them
*powell peralta
Him and bob burnquist were my FAVs on the original pro skater 1
Really down to earth - probably chill af to blaze with
Tony Hawks the man, those games will always be nostalgia
To keep in perspective how much he was getting paid, he was also making $150,000 a year at age 19 in 1980s money.
For reference: ua-cam.com/video/fTTxRPvOC04/v-deo.html
Also it wasn't 250k. My bad. 150k.
holy shit
$150k in 1985 is about $360k today.
Recall years back Millencollin - no cigar blasting and getting Tony to do some madshit on my Ps1 😂🔥
I’ll always have love for tony hawk he’s like the jordan of skating
Let's be honest, THPS 1 & 2 propelled him into the big time just with the soundtracks alone.
This dude I can’t believe I was apart of the wave that used to hate on Tony hawk smh man the best ever
you should get rodney mullen on too, super cool and laid back guy.
@Tony Montana agreed hes too chill ahahah
Tony Hawk is a legend!!! Grew up watching him/ playing THPS 1 and 2
PLS have Rodney Mullen on!! The GODFATHER of skating
Dark Knight stairs are flat-ground? Rails are flat-ground? Go watch a skatepart of his.. i can pretty much guarantee you that hes got more than flat-ground
First time I have ever heard anyone describe Rodney Mullen as Meh. Dude is pretty much Neo on a skateboard.
@@l3joint wtf
@@l3joint how do you sleep at night talking that much bullshit?
@@l3joint He is the reason why people are skating the way they are today.
Tony Hawk is chill asf
It amazes me that the skate community talks shit on this man. He is a true legend.
No they don’t the skate community loves Tony Hawk. Your trippin
@@kimjong699 youre trippin. Kinda obvious you don't skate because almost every reg skater will trash him and a lot of pros call/called him a sellout. Not all but A LOT
NORTEskXIV I think because most skaters don’t skate vert and when most skaters think of the goat we think of Rodney Mullen, nyjah huston, Eric koston etc. and tony hawk gets all the attention, but personally I’ve always had a lot of respect for tony hawk and grew up playing his games.
@@NORTEskXIV they dont tho..What does skating have anything to do with peoples mouths? He is loved by everyone, stop being a moron.
@@kubby6196 it definitely has to do with the division of street and vert
1:48 holy shit, so THAT'S why in Tony Hawk's Underground, when Eric gets all the glory by poaching the rooftop gap you did in Hawaii, your character writes in their name under the "Pro" list at the Vancouver level and tells the guy "Someone made a mistake". I never knew that part was based on a true event from Tony himself. Then again, maybe it wasn't, but that's crazy coincidence
