The game of Basketball has been my passion since I was 5 years old. I grew up as a kid watching my dad's recorded VHS tapes of playoff games through the 70s and 80s, and collected all the Basketball cards. Something about the game and what it represents just hooked me from a very young age.
My love for the game only continues to grow as time goes on. I love studying and analyzing the game, with an unbiased perspective. Feel free to subscribe, follow me on social media, and celebrate this amazing game and it's rich history with me!
I post videos every week on NBA history, predictions, hypothetical scenarios and current NBA topics.

What is your favorite rivalry in NBA History?
Curry vs King James
@@the_sports_nerdnot a rivalry when warriors were ganging up lebron
@@the_sports_nerdwarriors* vs Lebron 😂👀
@@nathanwhyte90481-1 without KD
I wanna say I'd have Russell-Chamberlain as the top rivalry.
They played the same position; far and away played each other the most times in all types of games more than any other pair listed or not; and there's was the 1st true rivalry, superstar or not.
We talk of Magic v Bird, but before them Russell and Chamberlain framed what it meant to watch 2 talented superstars go at it time and time and *time again.*
There's no league to save if Russell and Chamberlain don't drum up enough interest clashing every Sunday on ABC to garner initial interest and thus investment in the NBA.
Just my thoughts.
1) CP3 vs Scott Foster
2) Dillon Brooks vs Everyone
3) Anthony Bennett vs Basketball
4) Tracy McGrady vs the first round
5) Paul George vs the 4th quarter buzzer
6) Draymond Greens limbs vs the nearest opposing player
7) LeBron James vs loyalty
8) Dwight Howard vs allegations
9) Kevin Durant vs a Twitter feed
10) Kobe Bryant vs passing
7) LeBron James vs his hairline
8) Steph Curry vs his ankles
9) Joel Embiid vs the playoffs
edit:
Poole vs Draymond
Ja vs staying on the court
Larry Bird vs Isiah Thomas' coaching career
🤣🤣🤣🤣
11) Kwame brown vs Anthony Bennett GOAT debate
Bird has beef with everyone in the 80's lmao
Isaiah too 😂
Bird such a dawg
He is legit the coldest white boy to ever ball
@@loonatheconversenike4565 that should be another list video: baddest white boys in NBA history
#1: Larry Bird
Dirk and Luka are somewhere on that list, not sure which position yet
Bird vs the 80's
Ironically the only guy he didn't have beef with was his biggest rival
Jordan stan vs Lebron stan
Sorry Jonny but you really missed on this one.
Obviously Rasheed Wallace Vs the Refs takes the 1 spot
Need for Sheed ❤
Players who have beef with the refs is another topic for another video
#1 should be Rasheed
Ball dont lie☠☠☠
Facts
Jonny: because nobody gives a darn about two scrubs having a beef.
Kenyon Martin and Tim Thomas: are we jokes to you?
Jonny: yes
The top 2 will never be passed
There is prolly like 2 3rd graders out there that will eventually become the #1
Dumb thing to assume but OK.
Wemby and Chet
@@xlamb7460😅
Didn't get a chance to watch Chamberlain and Russell. But Magic and the Lakers Vs Larry Bird and the Celtics is what turned me on to basketball.
Wemby vs Chet could be great in the future
Chamberlain vs. Russell is and will always be the greatest player rivalry of all time and absolutely should have topped the list. No two opponents of that note ever had more matchups, they were the perfect antithesis of one another (greatest offensive player vs. greatest defensive player, individualist vs. team player, stats vs. rings, etc.), they were much more in the press as a rivalry due to the fewer teams, television channels and news publications, they met each other 76 more times in the regular season and 30 more times in the playoffs than Bird & Magic, which is 5 times the amount of regular season games and more than 2.5 times the amount of playoff games, and last but most certainly not least, most importantly, they played the same position and actually went head to head in the games.
its close but i think magic bird takes it on several issues... first the whole rivalry was the 2 greatest teams lakers celtics... not that sixers are not great but not the same... also many of those were just massively lopsided... the celtics were a great team vs 1 guy often...
magic bird was literally a rivalry you could not plan or write any better than what happened. college hated rivals. check... rookies together.. check... two best franchises.. that are complete opposite and hate eachother.. check.. a new owner on the lakers hell bent on beating celts.. check.... a media darling magic vs a grumpy bird.. check... white vs black.. check.... a failing league in need of a compelling story . check.... two teams with other great players and storylines... check... the only thing missing is the positions.. but bird at sf/pf and magic at pg/ sf same size sort of.. they often ended up on eachother... its impossible to duplicate this rivalry ANYWHERE in team sports .. then you add how they hated eachother then became great friends and then basically handed off the mantle to MJ at the Olympics... how do you beat that? very matched teams and awards... celtics were one bias death away from the rings being 4 to 4 or flipped 5 3 in favor of bird... Russell Chamberlain was not the dame
I have to say, in terms of legacy, yes to the first two spots, but MJ and Isiah have the most animosity out of any of these for sure. It's to the point that Magic, Larry, and Charles are saying they should make up, and they remain adamant about never doing so.
Honorable Mentions:
Yao Ming vs His foot
Tracy McGrady vs 1st round
Joel Embiid vs ECF
keep going...
😂
Allen Iverson vs Practice (PRACTICE!?)
LeBron James vs Finals 😂
Steve Nash vs WCF
Klay Thompson vs aging gracefully
Ben Simmons vs layup
Doc Rivers and 3-1 game leads in playoffs.
Giannis and Harden are worth an honorable mention I think
Johnny, you nailed the top 3. But Erving Bird must have been higher. They even came to blows and played in one of the greatest series of all time in '81. Definitely better and more important than many of the other ones, especially Westbrook Durant
Exactly I was definitely thinking they are higher than KD vs Russ because those were BATTLES and even preseason they had fights... should been at least 7 or 8
Wow, this is such a simple but great idea, Jonny. Great idea.
Thanks man! This one was actually my editors idea, so shout out to him :)
@@jonnyarnett indeed. Shout out to him!
Thanks a lot!!!
@@RTBiz you're very welcome. I think you guys have something here. Jonny, itd be nice to see another video going over the next best rivalries, and then in another video cover the rivalries between teams. LA-BOS, DET-BOS, DET-LA, CHI-BOS, CHI-DET, BOS-NY, etc.
I don't know if it deservers a spot on the list but Dame waving Russ goodbye has got to be the most savage moment in NBA history
Can’t wait for Wemby vs Chet to be on this list.
I don’t think you’ll have to wait for long . . .
Soft rivalry
Bird's career was basically having fierce rivalries with other top stars :D.
LeBron and Paul Pierce is a rivalry that comes to mind
Facts
Hey Jonny! Still waiting on that "best two-way player" video. Thanks for this video
Top 2: Jordan and Chamberlain
I feel like this is just the best player lmao, unless it’s the modern nba as offense matters much more
@eatyourcereal3873 it should be a video of big man and a few guards
@@UnconventionalReasoningHakeem’s knocking on the door. 👍
@@PeterAtkinson Probably Kobe and Kareem ahead of Hakeem.
Hakeem only had four seasons with over 25 pts/gm, 92-3 to 95-6. Easily his peak, with 2 titles, 1 MVP, 2 DPOY, and 1 Olympic Gold. Is overall pts/gm was 21.8, and even dropping his last three seasons, it would be in the 23-24 range.
But Michael and Wilt top 30 pts/gm, a 20% jump over the other contenders. That is huge.
Honorable mention if not top 10 is Kobe vs Garnett. Two fiery competitors that met 3 times in the playoffs
04WCF
08 Finals
10 Finals
Thanks for doing this video! I can't wait to see who you place for the best all-time team rivalries.
🤜🤛🏀
Glad I get notifications for all your videos.. I kno I’m bout to b entertained and intrigued each time
I agree with the list, especially the Will vs Russell. I am glad people talk about that, as it defined an era. There were lots of amazing players, but Wilt always being talked about, people forget the dominance Russell had over him. It is a time to study, since few today know about the fact Wilt was always causing more issues on teams than being a good team player.
Bill Russell vs wilt Chamberlain was hardly a rivalry tho because it was way too lopsided towards Bill Russell and his Celtics. The media built it up like that because they played the same position and were the best players in the league wilt was the best offensive player, Bill was the best defensive player. Wilt was flashy while Bill was a social activist and low key. Wilt was all about his stats while Bill only cared about wining . So it looked great while they built in up but 90,% of the times the result was the same with wilt putting huge numbers on Bill but Russells Celtics winning comfortable.
@@joel8692 I can agree with quite a bit about that, except that it wasn't much of a rivalry. It was a show of the difference of philosophies toward how the game should be played. Do the stats people drool over actually matter toward winning? Russell proved it didn't, but Wilt still kept trying. Does teamwork win, or does showboating? Same result. We have all these players nowadays that are constantly showing off, but how many of those players have wins? Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett showed that it was still true 30 years later. While showing off does draw crowds, rarely does it produce the epic results, unless your name is Jordan and perhaps Kobe. Wilt was great for the tickets, but bad for teams. Russell had the wins, but a little less on the tickets. I would still prefer Russell, though.
I would add Shaq vs Hakeem there as that TV commercial was fire
definitely needs a part 2
Awesome video, Jonny! This was fun to watch. It is informative and you made great points for each rivalry. I also got to learn more about the 80s NBA. My favorite rivalry is the Magic-Bird rivalry. Both were so skilled and the Lakers-Celtics matchups were epic. Their friendship is awesome also.
Do you plan to make a video about the stories KG told about Duncan?
Great video again. Have a nice day, Jonny 😊!
Thank you Jonny!
Very good list. I like the fact that most of the top 10 are very personal and transcended time and the confines of the hardcourt.
Bill Russell Wilt Chamberlain
Bird Magic
David Thompson vs George Gervin is such an underrated rivalry just because most people don’t know to it exists. Glad you mentioned it.
It’s interesting that Bill and Wilt often stayed in each other’s homes as they completed.
great video idea as always jonny boi
I think Luka vs Booker has a shot to be an all time rivalry if they meet in the playoffs a few more times. Off court, they say they have no problem with each other, but they almost always jaw at each other on the court. It’s one of the only current rivalries where they just don’t seem to like each other and both won’t back down
An excellent top 10. Could potentially quibble over the order, but hard to disagree with the 10.
I think it's pretty well known, but as it involves my beloved Spartans, I have to give a shoutout to the fact that Bird and Magic's rivalry kicked off before either one was drafted: The two met in the 1979 NCAA championship game, a much-anticipated matchup that is to this day reportedly the most-viewed college basketball game of all time.
A lot of these rivalries continued after the players left the NBA, some started before one player reached the NBA (like Jordan's Olympic teams beating NBA All-Star squads including Bird, Magic, and Thomas), but have any had such high-stakes meetings before EITHER got to the NBA? Jordan vs. Ewing is all I can think of.
That’s a d@mn good honorable mention list. Magic vs MJ, The Dream vs The Admiral, Dominique va either Bird or MJ
And Bird vs Jordan
dirk and the heatles are a story worth mentioning in my opinion.
keep up the great work jonny !
We need a part 2 for this
Tim Duncan vs Kobe had to find it's way here somehow but hey, great choices.
The no.1 saved the NBA❤
Facts
Lebron vs Agent 0 in the playoffs was 🔥
Man I started like those rivalries and kinda mad when Arenas was hurt after 2006.
Allen Iverson vs Practice deserves a spot in the top 5.
Wilt vs nba rules
Yes, it started his freshman year in college! Something he could do at will turned into a slam dunk contest highlight.
WILT is the G.O.A.T. and its not even close
@@UnconventionalReasoningFacts
Great video. I think the most popular was Magic vs Bird, not only because of their skills but also the difference in the team's play styles. I think the best rivalry would have to be players playing the same position so for me Russell vs Wilt because of so many match ups and Kareem vs Wilt was the young "Buck" vs the old pro. So glad you included Dr J. vs Bird as the 80 and 81 and 82 playoffs back then were crazy!!! That 81 playoff series featured Boston coming back from being down 3 to 1 and every game was close!!! Thanks
Can’t wait to see the Luka vs Dbook rivalry continue. It’s got a lot of room to enter this top 5
Great list I could Shaq/Dwight Howard and Lebron/Paul Piercer beefs as an underrated rivalries.
Great video! An underrated rivalry that isn’t listed is dirk and dwade
That should have been on the list.
Great quote, because people don’t give a darn about two scrubs having a beef lol
Good video brother
i think your top 3 is spot on....
It would still be interesting to hear about those honorable mentions as well… Part 2!!!
Ahhhh Jonny you just made a 💎
It's too early in the case of Luka and Book, but man do I love the quote "everybody tough when they're up"
Flawless list
A Kareem vs wilt Moore in depth video would be cool
Shai and Anthony edwards probably gonna end up on this list in a few years
You should do a part 2!
Luka and Devin. That's a good one. I know it's not player vs player but I love Reggie vs the Knicks!
how i wish Bird didn't lose that 1 finals to Magic.
Their rivalry and accolades could have been poetically even
4 Titles
3 FMvp
3 Mvp
9 All NBA Team
12 All Star
Larry actually loss two finals to the Los Angeles Lakers.
@@ktapreswreckd921v9 yes. I meant if they didn't loss that game with the Magic hook shot.
Kobe vs Duncan I feel was a great rivalry in the 2000’s
Bird v Irving at 10 and KD Russ at 9 is wild ah but hey it's your list. Great vid!
I would have added Kareem and Erving,
in the first part of their respective careers, it was a symbolic rivalry,
because the first was considered the best talent in the NBA
while the latter was literally the face of the ABA,
and although the NBA was considered the best league,
I don't think Kareem was the better player between the two every season he won MVP,
then after the merger, they met 3 times in the finals, the Lakers won the first 2
but the Sixers won in '83 with a team that was voted one of the best 10 ever
during the 50th anniversary of the league,
and another coincidence was that both were from New York,
and the first successes of both began at the Rucker Park
and other playgrounds in the city.
🔥
i would love some predicitons for upcoming rivalries or some in the making like doncic vs booker
Wemby vs Chet
Giannis vs Tatum
Haliburton vs Maxey
Ant vs Shai
It really makes me happy that kobe and Shaq made up before we lost kobe...I still watch their 1 on 1 interview
Favorite rivalries.... nineties Bulls/Knicks/Pacers in the east. late nineties and early aughts Lakers/Kings/Blazers/Spurs in the west.
Rivalry does not necessarily require a beef. Mikan v Schayes. Schayes v Pettit. Pettit v Russell. Baylor v Robertson. Bing v West. Bellamy v Reed. Reed v Unseld. Abdul-Jabbar v Hayes. Abdul-Jabbar v Walton. Havlicek v West. Cowens v Lanier. Barry v Maravich. Bing v Maravich. Archibald v Maravich. I don't know of major issues with these rivalries... the lack of media contributes to our comprehension/miscomprehension of earlier times, but I'd love to know more about the head to head battles of Pettit, Russell, Baylor, Robertson, Bing, West, et al.
1.) Magic and Zeek
2.) Tim Duncan and Dirk
3.) Wade and Dirk
4.) Lebron and KD
I believe these deserved spots over some of these entries. Russ is my favorite player but he and KD haven’t played enough games against each other. Shaq and Kobe too.
We’re we’re Jerry west and bill russel they played each other like 9 times and were very good
Jordan vs Thomas like 50 vs Ja, that rivalry going straight to the grave
The Jordan vs. Jordan rivalry was certainly the greatest rivalry of the entire 90s!
We definitely missed out on a potential Kobe vs Lebron!
Honorable mention too is Shaq vs Dwight
Hey Jonny , I have a question unrelated to video.
Im curious what do you think about my system to replace current minimum 65 games for awards system.
What if they made a new type of stats that they look at when choosing awards. The usual stats would still count for career and everything else except when choosing season awards. Instead of looking at the usual per game stats they look at per 82 games stats (if you miss a game it counts as you had 0 point,0 rebounds...). If thats the case Embiid stats so far would be 26 points 8 rebounds and 4 assists. So if someone misses more than 17 games but averages like 50 points per game his per 82 games stats would still be good enough for awards. So it awards both good play and availability. Anyway if a player injures himself in the first minute of the game they count that game to his stats. So why punish a players stats if he plays and gets injured during the game but not punish him if he doesnt play at all. This would also prevent cases where an MVP calliber player plays 64 games and is not in All NBA while all star player plays just 1 game more and is in all NBA team. Current system doesnt award playing more than 65 games because theres no difference between playing 65 or 82 games. I could see players reaching 65 games mark and then resting for remainder of the season. The more you play better your stats will be and better stats means better chances for awards. Most awards basically are just stats and winning except for defensive awards. In 50s and 60s scoring,rebounding... leaders were judged by totals not by per game average which awards availability like my system. Would love to know your opinion about this
I can’t believe Russell Westbrook vs Patrick Beverley only got an honorable mention
I think its funny how Bill's rival is seen as Wilt and not West seeing as they often met in the Finals. Though Bill and Wilt were in the same division so they often faced each other
Elgin faced Russell more than anyone in the Finals. He led the Lakers to the Finals as a rookie
Bill and Wilt played the same position, they guarded each other while playing over 140 games.
We have some great rivals for ages in NBA history
Surprised not to see Pat Bev vs CP3 here
Feel like you have find a way to put Lebron vs Paul pierce on here, pierce legit hated Lebron, and they had multiple game 7s showdowns.
Barkley vs Karl Malone should've also been an honorable mention. But I'd replace the KD vs Russ rivalry with Magic vs Zeke.
I don't see the podium getting threatened any time given the evolution of the NBA. Maybe Chet vs Wemby can become a rivalry if both stay healthy and in the same teams and if Chet becomes a franchise/lieutenant player, that's a long shot.
You should do a top 10 one sided rivalries
Shaq and the Admiral i liked
As a Curry fan, bron obviously has the better career. The only thing up for grabs is who gets to ring number #5 before it’s all said and done
Shaq and Kobe definitely shouldn't be that high, other than that, it's a nice list.
In a decade, I hope to see the father and son rivalry of Luka and Booker in this list lol
Tbh, an underrated rivalry was Moses vs Kareem. Kareem on almost his entire career was that center dominating everyone, but Moses was the only one who really matched Kareem in his prime.
Duncan vs Bryant is a top 10 of all time without any doubt, i would say top 5. They faced each other 6 times in the playoffs, the record was pretty close, 4-2 for Bryant. 18-12 overall. Often the team that won the rivalry would go on to win the whole thing. If we are talking about importance, quality of the rivals, frequency, it is at least top 5. They did not really have any bad blood, but it is hard to say Duncan vs Garnett or Curry vs LeBron had bad blood either.
Johnny i don't know if you can see this but can you make a video about old school and modern nba fans and why they couldn't agree on something plus their best critisms of each era and their most stupid critism of each era
1:40 Bird walked a freaking marathon
Kobe bryant vs tim duncan is an underrated rivarly, 6 playoffs matches, played in the two best teams of the most competitive era of basketball (lakers and spurs both won 9 chips during 1999-2010) and both were the man on their teams when play against each other (yeah kobe was always the better player between him and shaq when they played the spurs).
This is one of the reasons why I like the 80s best.
I have a hard time seeing Russ vs. KD as a top 10 rivalry honestly but the other ones are very good picks.
Great list, but I think the top spot should go to Bill Laimbeer v. The League.
-Jaylen Brown Vs. Left hand
-Devin Booker vs. Double teams and mascots
Biggest rivalry of the 90’s was Jordan vs Ewing. It’s not even an honorable mention. While Westbrook vs Durant is somehow a top 10 lol
My top 5:
1. Larry vs Magic
2. Bill vs Wilt
3. Zeke vs Mj
4. Lebron vs Steph
5. Tim vs Kobe
Okay like I know Wilt and Kareem had a short on-court rivalry and therefore had to be low on the list but I have to feel like it should be higher simply because it’s the two greatest players in NBA history going head to head.
the real #1 is actually the media-created rivalry between MJ and LeBron
but seriously yeah top 2 won't be passed probably ever
All I know is Magic Johnson and Larry Byrd Wilt Chamberlain, and Bill Russell better be the top two rivalries of all time
I think Skip vs LeBron deserved a spot.
#1 Shaq v Javale
🏀
