I agree. I've been frugal my whole life (I'm 59). Usually when I watch the frugal videos I never find out anything that I haven't already been doing for years. Hillary actually teaches me something I didn't know sometimes, and that's saying something!

That’s how most people look at saving money, but to me, savings is when you actually save the money into a savings account

Well if I already had $6 that I could spend on anything, and I didn't buy something with it, so it stayed in the bank, does that not count as saving money? Just trying to better understand your logic.
Because to me, taking money that wasn't currently in the bank and then putting it in the bank sounds like you would have been *making* money, no?

I’m a ups store manager and I have a money saving tip on shipping if you have a 8x8x8in box and under ship it at the post office they have cheaper rates for small and flatter packages like bubble mailers, ups has cheaper rates for larger and heavier packages.

    • @Myiahsmakings
      @Myiahsmakings 6 місяців тому

To add to that always save your boxes, packing materials, poly bags that you would otherwise throw in your recycling. if you don’t want ups to do the pack and ship guarantee for you and you choose to pack something yourself you’ll save between $5-$40 (depending on what you need for shipping) on shipping materials the cost for boxes and packing materials are just going up so save anything you get.

I save up to $25 for each book I borrow from the library. And I read A LOT! I’ve actually purchased four books this year, all books I love and will definitely read again, and got from my local independent book store (yes, more $, but I’m supporting my community, as the money stays local).

Another great way to save a bunch of money is to contact a local insurance broker and have them give you quotes on car and home insurance bundles. I saved 55% and got MUCH better coverage.

FYI, many people don’t realize this but if you receive damage due to a named snow or rain storm you might have to pay a percentage of the loss in addition to the deductible. It was in tiny print not just small print in my policy, I called agent and he said I was the first person to call questioning it when the change was made. He said people rarely read the the change notices. 🤦‍♀️ We had to start a new sinking fund. Anyway, worth checking if this affects your area of the country.
And, if you have a poor credit score and want to fix insured damage your self, they can make you pay and then reimburse you. Just sharing not commenting on your credit. Happened to a friend.

We do the same thing for Christmas. It’s definitely less stressful saving on a month to month for Christmas than trying to figure out how are we going to pay for it last minute. I wish we would have started doing that earlier.

Excellent savings! 🎉🎉🎉. Congratulations on learning to cook baked beans!
Though this is personal, I wish I had switched to a menstruation cup and washable pads. If I had done this starting a 13, I could probably retire, lol. Ok, not really but I would have saved a lot over those 30 yrs. And cut the hassle of buying and looking for sales. And the cups hadn’t been invented either. But you have time and if you have girls, they can start with the pads and move on later to the cups.

Another tip: put it on your calendar to contact your internet company, again, in 5.5 months. When you call them (before they jack up your $40 to $100) tell them that you know you are set for your "introductory offer of $40 to expire" but .....and then add your competitor comment about the $40 and add that its for life. Cuz, honestly, most of them are doing $40 for life now for internet. Ive been on the $40 plan for about 4 years now and its ongoing. And we have a binder with zipper plastic envelopes in it that we save for Christmas, vacation spending money etc. We call it our "Want & wishes" book. The categories change as our "wishes and wants" are met. Right now we have an envelope which is revolving for Entertainment, shopping/thrifting (this is our clothes/shoes fund too), casino trips and summer or winter vacation spending money. Then, we have envelopes for specific, personal wishes/wants like a new to us car, a new to us camper, new carpet for our house. When we get back from vacation, in March, we are adding envelopes for a new pots & pans set and my hubby wants one for a new golf club. We fund it with "extra money" from overtime, selling things, our rebate apps, and saving on our budgeted monthly groceries, toiletries, household, eating out etc. Its amazing how quickly our wishes are granted this way, just by putting $10 into our envelopes every pay day. I try to keep it to 2-3 envelopes at any given time for personal wants, in addition to the 4 revolving ones. Otherwise, it takes too long to fund the wants. And I use my no buy group ALL.THE. TIME! Which is why we currently have $500 in our shopping envelope! haha I havent had to use it in months.

Sometimes I've gotta replay your clip to catch what I missed.😂
I'm sorry but I'm not all that frugal .
I don't think we buy all that much at the store anyway.
There are items I rather have than a generic brand.
I gotta have original ranch dressing and so does my youngest granddaughter.
Or maybe she says she does just cause pawpaw does. LoL 😆
    Wonderful episode 😀 ma'am.

Our local buy nothing group is rather small, we live in rural America and there are just not many items listed and anything I would like seems to always be gone but I would definitely use it. This year I started specific Sinking Funds.

Yeah, that can be hard. The way I rationalize it is remembering that everyone likes to feel good by being kind and giving things away, and that's not only limited to "well off" people, and everyone has something of value to offer. Even if it's just a cup of laundry detergent!

I saved myself a bunch of money, as we just found out my husband is gluten intolerant, and man is that food expensive. So I buy gluten free oats in bulk which saved me £8.89 each month, on top of that I started baking his treats myself which only costs me £1.50 to make which would have been the equivalent of £7.00 worth. ❤ savings ❤

    • @Homegrown_Hillary

At the end of the day I want to see smiles on my kids’ faces, know they have full bellies and a cozy warm place to sleep, to see trust and love in my partner’s eyes and have what I need to do it all again tomorrow. Dust on the shelves doesn’t even enter my mind. We make choices about where to put our love and energy. I have to believe you have better places to put your attention and energy than other people’s dust. I challenge you to now do an act of kindness for someone not expecting it to balance out what you have contributed here. We’d love to hear what act of kindness you picked and how it went!
