Love that intro!! The advantage of Zoom, which I have used for a few weeks now, is it gives you greater audio control than Skype I think. Zoom allows you to both enable the original sound and disable the background noise suppression controls in the Audio Settings. Makes the reproduction better for music lessons.

All her friends who only do live gigs are really suffering right now, so she is grateful to have students already. I've been teaching via Skype for about a year since a move. Great tips! I mainly teach guitar, and so far, all of my online students are guitarists. With the self-quarantining, many of my local students are opting for Skype lessons, even when they only live 15 minutes away. This means that some of my online students are also piano students, at least for a few weeks. With guitar, I always use headphones, otherwise I start getting a feedback loop. One drawback for online students is that you can't play or sing with them at the same time because of the lag. Aside from that, I think my students and I both enjoy the convenience of remote lessons.
One other IMPORTANT tip I forgot to mention: Don't blast the volume on your speakers. This can cause weird feedback to occur, especially if you're not using an external microphone. What ends up happening is your speakers end up feeding back into your internal microphone, and you get this wavy, submerged sound that is really annoying. Keep your volume at a level that you can still hear what is going on, but not too loud. Make sure your student or teacher does the same thing on the other end. Another way to mitigate this is to use headphones, as mentioned in the video. I hope that helps!

Thx for this Josh, really helpful. A piano teacher, I'm on the verge of giving this a go. I can see that the Mac on the desk provides both the camera (for the student's view) and also a largish screen for you to see the student. Is it possible to switch during the lesson to give the student an overhead view of the piano: from time to time: have two camera inputs? I think you are quite right that we want to see the person we are communicating with (hence the waist up image), but at times I can see it may be helpful to show an overhead view.
have you heard about multiplayerpiano.com? you can plug in your digital piano and get the midi playback in a online lobby. it has that "synthesia" look and shows you which keys are being played if the students mic quality isnt good you can at least see it instead of trying to hear it.
Hi Josh, thank you for your tips. Maybe try Zoom and activate "original audio" in the advanced audio settings. If you didn't have that activated it probably sounded bad with the parameters Zoom decided to activate since it's optimized for speech out of the box. Hi Josh, I need your help plz. I'm a Vocal Teacher from ''Cherry's Vocal Studio'' Sydney. When I teach Online the students can't hear Piano sound when they start singing with, when not singing then they can hear the Piano Notes. Have you tried Zoom's "preserve original sound" option (support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/115003279466-Preserve-Original-Sound)? The option turns off all software "audio enhancement," uses your raw microphone input, and forces Zoom to use a slightly higher audio bit rate of roughly 120 kbps. With external mics, using original sound on Zoom achieves superior audio quality to, say, Skype: natural reverb from the instrument is no longer clipped or cut out. Toggling "automatically adjust volume" also allows you to preserve the original dynamic range. To my knowledge, no other major app allows you to bypass the built-in software audio processing, which is useful for speaking but is poor for music lessons.
What are your thoughts on teaching piano on a keyboard? Where I live, WiFi isn't the greatest, so online lessons wouldn't work. Some of my students live too far away to teach at my home, and since there's a handful of them, we decided to take lessons in a neutral location, about 15 minutes away on my end. There is a keyboard over there. It is pretty high quality, but hearing you talk about projection makes me a little bit worried about that. Would teaching on a keyboard still be feasible and workable? What are everyone's thoughts on this?

Thanks Josh - I'm a piano teacher in the UK. I've just finished my third week of 100 percent online studio lessons with Skype. I watched this video back a couple of weeks ago but was so stressed I could hardly take anything in. Now I know that Skype lessons do work and I am still going to have an income, I've watched it again in a calmer frame of mind. It is most helpful and generous of you - thank you very much. I'm going to start refining what I do now. One question - does Skype somehow mess with the sound of the piano because it is optimised for voices? If so, is there a way of changing this? I normally do in person lessons and I'm horrible at tech stuff, but the pandemic has resulted in me trying Skype lessons online. It works to a degree but the sound is terrible. The student's pianos sound like they're underwater, with only a few notes coming out of each bar and sounding really out of tune and ear piercing with the higher register notes. The students say my piano sounds the same. I'm just using a relatively old Windows 8 laptop with the built in mic and speaker. Is this kind of thing normal? I can talk with them fine, but the sound of the piano is the problem, though it is still possible to do the lesson.

I just got a Boya BYM1DM lavalier mic that I wanted to use initially with my iPhone 6, but when I plug it in directly to the headphone port it cuts the sound out. Maybe I have to use headphones? Helpful video, Josh. I am using “ICE” globe microphone and even though students can hear me well talking and I can hear them, when we they or I being to play, it sounds like it is under water. Do you think this is a microphone problem or computer? I use Zoom for lessons. Thanks!

Have you ever had any payment issues with students where you get scammed? Do they pay before you start? What would you say is the absolute needed if your barely starting and don’t have money ? Microphone and iPad?

One quick question: I was able to connect a very good pair of external mics to my iPad Pro (2018) and use it with Zoom, but the sound was not improved at all (pretty awful). I tried to use both FaceTime and Skype instead, but neither picked up the external mic. Both FT and Skype apps on the iPad do not seem to allow choice of mic (they only relate to native mic). Is there a way around it? A Blue Yeti mic is on the way but I have a feeling I will run into the same problem. Any advice from anybody appreciated! Btw, in my case both FT and Skype (with native mic) gave better sound than Zoom w/great external mic. Perhaps due to concurrent overuse of Zoom? Thanks again!

That would take care of the thing you said that Skype interprets quiet parts as background noise.

Now I know that Skype lessons do work and I am still going to have an income, I've watched it again in a calmer frame of mind. It is most helpful and generous of you - thank you very much. I'm going to start refining what I do now. One question - does Skype somehow mess with the sound of the piano because it is optimised for voices? If so, is there a way of changing this? I'm not that tech geeky - hope you know what I mean. Sometimes it sounds like my students are playing under water - even when not playing quietly as you point out. Thank you. Annie x

I normally do in person lessons and I'm horrible at tech stuff, but the pandemic has resulted in me trying Skype lessons online. It works to a degree but the sound is terrible. The student's pianos sound like they're underwater, with only a few notes coming out of each bar and sounding really out of tune and ear piercing with the higher register notes. The students say my piano sounds the same. I'm just using a relatively old Windows 8 laptop with the built in mic and speaker. Is this kind of thing normal? I can talk with them fine, but the sound of the piano is the problem, though it is still possible to do the lesson.

I just got a Boya BYM1DM lavalier mic that I wanted to use initially with my iPhone 6, but when I plug it in directly to the headphone port it cuts the sound out. Maybe I have to use headphones? But I’m trying to use it without headphones, so maybe I need an adaptor? Keep up the excellent work.

Interesting video thank you! My main problem is the time lag between myself and the student. I like to accompany my students or count with them but the time lag makes this impossible! How do I eliminate the time lag please?

jskuan03 thanks! Yes, I would still recommend that mic placement. You can experiment open/closed to see what your teacher prefers for the space that you’re in :)

Helpful video, Josh. I am using “ICE” globe microphone and even though students can hear me well talking and I can hear them, when we they or I being to play, it sounds like it is under water. Do you think this is a microphone problem or computer? I use Zoom for lessons. Thanks!
Elena Victoria I go over this in the video. Try adjusting the placement of your mic and play around with the “automatically adjust volume” setting within skype

Thank you Josh, well done and extremely helpful. One quick question: I was able to connect a very good pair of external mics to my iPad Pro (2018) and use it with Zoom, but the sound was not improved at all (pretty awful). I tried to use both FaceTime and Skype instead, but neither picked up the external mic. Both FT and Skype apps on the iPad do not seem to allow choice of mic (they only relate to native mic). Is there a way around it? A Blue Yeti mic is on the way but I have a feeling I will run into the same problem. Any advice from anybody appreciated! Btw, in my case both FT and Skype (with native mic) gave better sound than Zoom w/great external mic. Perhaps due to concurrent overuse of Zoom? Thanks again!

It is an awesome exclusive guide for learning how to play the piano easily without the headache. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my cooworker at very last got astronomical results with it.
