I really wouldn't recommend using a flat bit (spade drill) for enlarging the hole in the aluminium trim, there's a high risk of cutting yourself or damaging the trim. Cone cutters or stepped drills are designed for this purpose are not expensive and are much, much safer.
Thank you! I have a 2015 LR4 on which I was able to perform this retrofit, thanks to your video. This was far more helpful than the caption-less graphics in the factory documentation.
Very helpful video! If anyone had the same issue as me where some of the original Land Rover roof bolts were unusable/threaded etc.- you can remove the sealant around it and unbolt and replace with AYR500061
Nice video, but a word of caution: I managed to promptly break one of the bolts because there is some black plastic sealant of some sort in the holes, partially filling the threads. If you did not have a roof rack on previously, the bolt holes may contain this gunk. I haven't solved the issue yet but I will try cleaning it out with a tap. If you google around in the forums you can find others have hit the same issue.
My LR4 2013 does not have any roof rails currently and I have a pair of standard that I'd like to install. Does installing the standard also require cutting the metal strip that runs the length of the roof gutter?
The trim strip is stainless, use a stepped cutter for enlarging the hole. If you have one, a Dremel with a cutting disc is good for cutting the strip or tidying it up after sawing.
Hi - I'm hoping you (or anyone) can help. We have got a short rail with the bars but we have no instructions and I can't find any online. We can't find any bungs in the trim to fit the rail to (I assume thats what we are meant to do?). Are we supposed to drill these or does the short rail fit in place of the trim? The screws in the car are 10mm so I guess they don't fit through them? Although in your video they look different on top to ours?
Hi ✋🏻 ... what can I fix or put on that extended roof rail ! I mean for example I’m looking for movable light arm to tight it in it . How I can use it properly ? Thanks
Any idea how to lift up the front cap on the extended rails once you have them installed? My disco came with the long rails and I need to get the front cap off to slide some cross bars in.
Hi my early RR Sport also had no bungs - you can follow the process at the start of the sport video - see below ua-cam.com/video/gpv66AwFHeE/v-deo.html
Great video! I have just got a set of extended roof rails for my D3. Would you have a video on how to remove the genuine LR spotlights? I need to remove them to fit some LED versions but buggered if I can figure out how to remove the bloody things! Cheers Peter
Hi did you sort this ? i can send you a link to the original fitting instructions.... google "LAnd Rover Topics" then go to user information - then select vehicle - then go to accessory fitting and you will find it there. Sorry for delay i missed your email when i was in china a couple of weeks back.
G'day mate, yes I did thanks. Popped the green LR plastic on the front and there ws a pesky screw behind it, undo the screw and slide the light off its mounting. I'll be getting Fyrlyt Nemesis 9000 on it in the new year.cheers and Merry Christmas!
oops my mistake should be Topix not Topics ! www.landrovertechinfo.com/ its a really usefull website for all accessory fitting instructions - its the official Land Rover website.
I have huge problem with mine - the roof glass was apparently replaced in the past, and whoever did it - did the poor job, as it is not centered! Now one of the roof railings does not fit in the groove... I wonder if there is a way to fix this without removing the roof glass (which is very $ labour intensive)
I am reading a brochure of Land Rover Discovery, they said i need to have Ditch finishers and Alpine light kit to fit roof rails and cross bars. I dont know what these things are. Can you help to explain me a bit. Some photo would be very nice. Thanks a lot. (page 120 in this brochure www.landrover.com/Images/Land-Rover-Discovery-Brochure-1L4621810CC0BXXEN01P_tcm281-407416.pdf
Who is your camera man? He is terrible... There are so many parts of this video that he is just recording the window instead of what's happening on the roof. And.... this is a Roof Railing System not a Roof Rack / Cross Bar.

I have to agree with your advice - I will use the cone cutter in future.

Can roof rails be fitted without discarding the channel trim?
Thanks for the video guys helped a lot
Brilliant videos... Thank you!

Follow-up: this worked. Need to use a 6mm-1.0 tap and clean out the threads.
and you do all the key detail as usual

I am sure that strip is aluminium.... fancy a bet ?
When hacksawing, use all the blade......sheet metal should never be drilled using a flat wood - bit, a hole-saw should be used.

Can you tell me the size of the channel in the roof rail? Wondering what size channel nuts will fit it.

Love the vids
Hi, great video, any idea what size are the bolts that screw in to hold the rail on?
Cheers James
M6-1.0 Torx 25
Thread length 23mm, Head diameter ~14mm
What after market rails do you recommend?
Can the trims be left in place
excellent thank you but must say it took me more than 20 mins a side alone
Hey Nice video! I followed the video but I broken the plug. It is really hard to get it out. And one of the hole is seized. Any ideas? THX
Whats the partnumber for the extended roof rack rail?
Any idea how to lift up the front cap on the extended rails once you have them installed? My disco came with the long rails and I need to get the front cap off to slide some cross bars in.
You should not need to remove the end caps to slide the cross bars in - they drop in from the top ?
My disco does not have the bungs to remove to take the rim off do you have any advice its a disco 3 2005
Hi my early RR Sport also had no bungs - you can follow the process at the start of the sport video - see below

I've never seen a Disco 3 or 4 without sun/moon roofs. That must be an Euro offered option
I got one....

Misschien een stappenboor gebruiken ? Vlinderboor is voor hout.
How thick is the spacer does anyone know??

No sure about this ! this is tricky to advice without see it !
@@L663 I solved it by removing weather stripping from the rail on the roof glass side
How much weight can you put on these racks?
I have had lots on the roof of mine - but i used 3 cross bars to spread the load !
