I am 66 now, I’m a life long Yankee Fan and grew up in Bronx and worked in South Bronx, I remember the Day he Died, I remember exactly where I was when I Heard he Died! I was driving a Truck and I just started Crying! I love Thurman Munson, at that time he was one of my Favorite Yankees. RIP Mr Munson you are surely missed still after all these years. I do Believe he would have been in the HOF, I still believe he should be seriously be re-considered. His Numbers were well on the way. 🙏🙏🙏

It's crazy to think about what he could have done with a full career, he was one of the best catchers ever.

One of the best to ever do it! Why he isn't in the Hall is mind boggling for those who watched him play everyday.

Thurman Munson was my favorite player. He inspired me to get behind the dish on my little league team, a spot I never relinquished for the rest of my time playing baseball. RIP Thurman Munson.

I was in a restaurant sitting at the bar with a friend. News came on the TV that Thurman had died. I had chills and teared up. I’ll never forget him a truly great player.

He was a heck of a leader. He definitely set the standard for the catcher's position for the NY Yankees. R.I.P.

That 41% throw-out rate alone is a Hall of Fame stat. And people overlook the fact that he played that position for several years on bad knees - there were times when he could hardly stand back up from his crouched down position. I think that if you took a poll of major league players who played during the 1970s, like 95% of them would say Munson should be in the Hall of Fame.

I was 17when he passed. I had the same feeling as when Lymon Bostock,California Angel outfielder got shot. I was on my way to play baseball, and turned back crying and went home.

So sad that a great catcher had his life cut short by his accident.Campy had the same fate.

Would have been interesting to see how the rest of his career would have played out. ‘79 would have been his last year as a full time catcher, because like Bench at the same age his knees were shot. So he would have been moved to first base or DH, or perhaps traded back home to Cleveland. But alas, we’ll never know. A dark, dark day in Yankees history. RIP. 😞

The comparison is with Buster Posey. Very similar careers, length, stats and success wise, with Thurman coming up bigger in the postseason and on defense/throwing out base stealers, etc. Posey one more title and I'd say barely edges out Thurman as a hitter. I think Posey gets in the HoF first ballot (especially with Mauer getting in). So how does Thurman not get another look, and soon?

If Posey gets in, and I think he should, somehow they have to get Thurman in. He should have been in 40 year ago!

Unfortunately, he hasn't gotten in because of the numbers and he was to some extent on the back end of his career when he passed. To me, he had all the accomplishments to be in the HOF but as time goes by, his HOF chances get smaller and smaller. Of course anytime you bring up Kirby, you bring up Donnie, who had similar numbers, but without the WS win.

  • @dzanier

Curry’s argument is flawed because Clemente’s numbers were already HOF worthy.

    13hr 80rbi .292ba 756 OPS
That was Thurman's average year derived mathematically. Sorry no HOF ... and I'm a Yankee fan since 1963 !!

As a 12 year old born and raised in suburban L.A. I grew up a Yankees fan and remember exactly where I was hearing it on the car radio. Riding back from the hardware store with my Dad when it came on. Went to the 78 Series at Dodger Stadium with my Dad and Uncle (both RIP) which is a great memory. That 77-78 team is my All-time favorite. Was Munson a slam dunk for HOF inclusion? Not sure. It's close. No doubt he was a great catcher and the cornerstone of that team but am on the fence about that. IMO a player has to be a no-doubter and I think Munson's stats around '79 were beginning to slide..
