- In 1959 Britain's biggest cinema company, the Rank Organisation, decided to replace its newsreels with a series of short, quirky, topical documentaries that examined all aspects of life in Britain. For the next ten years, Look at Life chronicled - on high-grade 35mm colour film - the changing face of British society, industry and culture. Britain on Film draws upon the 500 films in this unique archive to offer illuminating and often surprising insights into what became a pivotal decade in modern British history. The series shows how Look at Life reflected the radical shifts in the position of women in British society, and shows how the country adapted to the new demands and expectations of women at home, in the workplace and at play.

I can’t watch these videos without feeling heartbroken that our world has deteriorated so much.
I agree so much. What has humanity done to itself. 🤣
many an old fart alive in the 1960s felt the same way as you do. they felt that the culture of the 1960s was a sign that the world had deteriorated, and wished that the world would return to the way things were in the 1940s, the 1920s, or even the Victorian era.
@@io1380 First of all I'm not an old fart you dickhead or are you just another trouble making Fannie or both. I enjoy those times because my nearest and dear family and friends were young healthy and alive. And as for today's modern times for all people have ive yet to meet anyone who truly feels good about themselves and their lives.
@@io1380 I agree to an extent, but I think we've reached a point where "good ol' days" comments are more relevant. E.g. how many fat people did you see in this video? Or people using phones/social media which increases social isolation? The internet has many wonderful functions, but it's ever increasing influence on our lives is killing communities and causing us to stay at home and consume more etc.
@@io1380 Those people in the 1960s were correct, that decade was the beginning of the downfall of our civilization. Since you weren't even alive in the 1960s, your opinion means less than nothing.
Watching this series of films actually pains me. Once a great nation now destroyed from within.
The theme music was not used by Rank when the films were show, The BBC have chosen 'Another Happening' by Neil Richardson.
This was really fascinating and interesting not to mention entertaining. I just like the way they were in those days. Why did we all have to move on to the way we are now. The service in those days was remarkably impressive and everything and everyone was friendly and helpful and happy. 😀❤😀
Hi there, thank you so much for the uploads. The BBC took them off iplayer in 2014 for some mad reason. A few vids don't work from series one, is there any chance you could re-upload them? They are: "Women", "brits at play" and "this sceptred isle". I would be so grateful. Thank you ❤
The first half of the 1950;s was DRAB. Most people like my late parents had lived through rationing and were living their HUM DRUM lives. By 1959 life was becoming a little less STAID. This clip mentions MARKS & SPENCER. Oh how things have changed in the last 30 years for M&S. Looking at the clip all the ladies looked so glamorous in their day clothes and once they showed off the designer couture it was WOW.
The ladies had naturally lovely figures and were naturally beautiful. Not like today when all these so called TV CELEBRITIES just look the same with plenty of LIP FILLER, BOTOX and such strait hair that looks like it is painted on.
In the US, I don’t think the men went in for the fashions like Britain. Dad got a man’s haircut when he went in the Navy at 16, and 73 years later, he gets the military high and tight, albeit, with less hair! He still wears his Navy issue woolen peacoat. It fits perfectly, and so would his dress blues and whites if he still had them.
Marie Katherine Good for dad.
Yeah… I’m not from those eras but what I’ve heard through documentaries, men in the United States didn’t have much options in haircuts until the 1960s… Supposedly
Not enough about men's fashion. There were big changes in traditional tailoring techniques, such as fusing, and it was the age of the Conduit Street cut.
The bird @8:39 looks like she's emerging from a crate of herrings!
@8:21 Look how smartly the bartender is dressed, usually they're just in jeans and t-shirt now.
Agree Americanisation of all cultures is now complete...
The Girl in the Furs...😍
Rosalie Ashely...the wife of Mr.Teasie Weasey...Raimond
Does anyone know the names of the songs being played throughout the video? Or background music I should say
So this is were all those clips have come from on music vids

Edna still fascinated by these frocks from above
What I would give to have Vidal Sassoon do my hair! Sadly, he's gone as are the times .
The "sartorial earthquake" seems to have given the men a choice of lighter greys for their suits.
Weren’t like that for my late parents. Father (1917-1981). Mother (1927-2005). I was born too late in 1956 to understand any of this at Brentwood in Essex, and trendsetters was correct, do people really dress/hair like that in 2024?.
Not a fat person in sight...
No tattoos on women as well.
@ 20:30 does anyone know this song?

Ossie Clark, Barbara Hulanicki, Celia Birtwell and Zandra Rhodes.
Poor animals :-( Great series though!
+Charlimay I agree all of the those baby minks or foxes with their tails attached covering the opening scene of the young blonde wearing a coat of them and nothing else. Note, her bare bum peaking out the back!!1 I am that faux (fake) fur is popular and worn and designed more now.
I agree with you. I’m vegetarian.. BUT watch it again. The difference between life then and now is nothing to do with animals... it’s the quality of life issues, for people not the animals!
I know right
To be, to be, to be, a model, to be an actress, to be an athlete, sometimes the fun is in the trying,,, sometimes back in the day, modelling was a sort of way ware a pretty girl , showcase herself, to attract
A high value husband, ? In some cases the also ran could pick up a bigger prize, than the winner,?

8:07 Is that Yootha Joyce?
+Aquaseventytree ; Defo!
+Aquaseventytree Yes, before alcohol took over her life :(
mistofoles
I remember something Sheila Fearn (Tristan's mum) once said. She called in the dressing room about 8 am and Yootha had a 'cup of coffee' - it was filled with neat brandy. Tragic.
Still a great actress, don't make'em in that mould anymore. Larvvvly!
No
I wish the BBC would stop telling us what to think.
Yet as wonderful as the 60s were it also produced the seeds of our destruction.
Multiculturalism has really worked out.
Atrophy

I still am.
Pure Austin Powers!!!
Yeah, baby!
God save the Queen’s pocketbook! Surely, Her Majesty will be buried with it attached to her arm!
@@christineusher6204 I don’t know. I was apparently insane last year.
Look......Real feminine women before they had tattoo's plastered all over their bodies ??
……..and looked like beached whales!
She was sexy BB and Linda Thorson (Tara King) too......all speaking in those lovely clipped posh accents that were the norm back then.
its disgusting how Zoos treated animals in the 60's

Cheaters never prosper

Fur no no way not for me EVER
Thankfully they no longer wear furs
Thank the heavens
Didn't you watch it, he said clearly it was on the increase.
Thank god fur is no longer in fashion. Poor animals
Like he said, it's only do gooders of today, fur as been worn since the dawn of men.
ok all that fur made me queasy...
Give it a break, humans wore animal skins for eons, still do shoes jackets and belts. Ouit judging the past with your new pc snowflake morals.
