Our roadtrip through Palenque & Campeche - on our way BACK to Mexico (from Nicaragua)

Today's episode takes us through the final leg of our two week road trip between Granada, Nicaragua to Merida, Mexico.
We left Flores, Guatemala and crossed the border at El Ciebo without any real issues. Our first stop was for TACOS of course - we had been in Nicaragua for 4 months and our mouths were watering for some al pastor, which we found immediately!
After that we made our way to Palenque, where we stayed for a few days. We worked the rest of the week from our little apartment. On Saturday we were able to tour the ruins at Palenque - and WHAT A TREAT… we absolutely LOVED it. After the ruins, we walked a trail for about an hour and a half through the jungle to find a little hidden temple. IT was HOT and muggy and we definitely worked up a hanger. We treated ourselves to a delicious lunch in the "boutiquey: part of town, which happened to be right by our apartment.
Sunday morning we left early for Campeche, the road was a little rough but the mole Chanin had at a roadside stand made up for all the pothole trauma lol…
Campeche turned out to be one of our most favorite places we have ever seen in Mexico. In the same way that Seattle has tons of water, but no really good beaches - Campeche was sort of the same (but warmer and dryer of course!) There is a ton of history, the food is above and beyond - and I am not sure we have met nicer people. The citizens of Campeche LOVE their town, and many people told us it is safer even then Merida. We had a ball and definitely did NOT have enough time to see it all. We spent Friday morning at the archaeological site of Ednza, and what a hidden gem. I think there were 4 other people at the entire site. There were more staff members there than there were visitors.
Saturday morning we said a sad goodbye, and headed to Merida, where we will spend the next 6 weeks.
