    I would never have thought that jokes about addiction could be beneficial.

      I feel like that would be a waste of his talents. You don't need to be such a good story teller to host a show, but you do need to be a good listener. He would be bored out of his mind interviewing celebs all day.

    John has always owned up to his addictions while still being comedic about it. It's good to see that even after his terrible year that he can bounce back and laugh at it a little bit.

    I don’t know if it’s a generational thing, but I can connect to his vibe despite never using drugs. John Mulaney, you’re an American treasure and I send you so much strength.. you can do it.. stay sober and safe… we need your energy, we need you!

      As opposed to sending him strength?? Could you actually Pray for Love to intervene and Help John. His child can't, his wife can't, his friends can't..drug addiction is the most powerful way to destroy ourselves and everything and everyone we Love. But God really does intervene. I know. Personally. By God's Grace sober for decades from several addictions I have Zero power over. Ever. Sorry I'm writing this a lot tonight cuz I know God can Help and for reasons I don't understand pray works

      IDK. I am 47 and my 15 year old daughter also gets the importance of addressing the sad and bad side of life through laughter like only SNL allows. Many have stood on the stage and comforted us, and I am sure themselves, through shit times and circumstances.

      SNL shows are always hit or miss, but when Mulaney is on they all seem to take off into the stratosphere. I think he fixes all of them.

    I saw John at the first big show he did post-rehab in Boston. First night, you could tell he was nervous at first, but he absolutely killed it. The material here is pretty much a refined section of that, and somehow it's even better the second time.

John is sober again..but he fears confrontation..life sadly carries untold numbers of those.. I hope he can reach honest real sobriety but I know for me it took God and many other's prayers...

    I'm not a drug addict, but as someone who has been in treatment for an eating disorder, thank you for normalizing going away to rehab/treatment and making it something to not be ashamed of.

      It is so true. Wow, being dependent on opiates for back pain for five years. I became dependent. I thank God I never went further, I got off pain medicine after spinal fusion surgery. It has been 4 years. This is so funny, and nice to hear someone be real and making light of human problems we face in life via comedy. We do recover.

    John’s 2-month rehab story is proof that comedy is tragedy plus time.
    I’m a pilot, and my plane crashed so quickly I couldn’t think of any good punchlines. Maybe if I stalled in the air a little longer my jokes could’ve landed, unlike my plane.

      @@jeanette3915 as much as you're entitled to think that, you have to remember that we don't know what goes on behind the scenes or the specifics of these people's personal lives or situation. I think taking sides and judging people we don't know is rather parasocial; this isn't a case like Johnny and Amber where specifics were aired publicly. Changing your mind about wanting children is also valid I think.

    This is genuinely the funniest opening I’ve ever seen and I’m so glad to see him doing so much better. He’s made us laugh for years and we nerve know what happening behind the scenes, I can’t imagine how nerve racking it is to come back to the stage and anticipate the public’s reaction but he killed it

    This hits a real hard place and makes the sad bits of me smile. When we had an intervention for my dad in late 2018, he definitely wasn't expecting it. It's been a hard road for him, but he's been clean for about a year now. And this humor from an addict helps me understand my dad and love him through it. Thank you to John Mulaney for being so open.

    This really was one of the best monologues I’ve seen. I have some of the same characteristics, where I’m polite when I shouldn’t be. I also have struggled with addiction and am doing well. It’s nice to hear someone say it and just open up to it. I hope he stays sober.

      If you listen to some of his older material, he definitely talks about getting black out drunk and using drugs. He’s had this problem for quite a while, but he’s still fighting and that’s what counts!

    Thank you so much John, for being honest about your addiction. You have literally just proven true that old adage "anyone can become an addict". Most people think that Proper well educated men Never fall victim to addiction, and that is a dangerous mindset. You're also making it okay to be open and honest about your addiction. Which will give strength to more people than you'll ever know. Again, thank you my friend, and stay strong.

    1) I'm glad he took control over his life and health it is a one day at a time process.

    John killed it! One of my favorite monologues ever. So proud & inspired by him. I'm recently recovering from addiction myself. I'll be honest, when John was using I started to become annoyed by him 🙄🤦🏼‍♀️. He completely turned it all around though, better than ever, imo. So relatable for so many. Appreciate him being so candid/ sharing his situation. Can really help others 💜

    The sheer amount of determination, courage, and WILL that must have taken... wow. If you didn't admire the John before (and there were many, many traits to admire), but if you DIDN'T before... I sincerely hope you're reevaluating that position. It's hard enough for most people to engage in public speaking. Harder still to stand up and own one's dirt. But imagine standing up to own one's dirt, in front of a _live, studio audience, *being broadcast worldwide*!_ Wow.
