About 1961 I learnt to glide with the RAF,as an air cadet. A field near Cranwell. The final day was drizzly and horrible, and we were told completing the course would be voluntary. I think we all wanted to complete our 3 solo circuits. Once up, in an open cockpit, the winch launch taking the glider up to a kind of cloud base, the most deafening racket started, reverberating in this horrible black wet sky. So scary, I expected lightning. On landing, (badly), they told us it was several V bombers taking off from I belive Scampton, - and I believe Vulcans.

We were waiting to cross the runway at Waddington in an old RAF coach and they called QRA. (Quick Reaction Alert) so they stopped us at the threshold crossing. So the driver turned the engine off and we sat and watched as the crews ran out to FOUR Vulcans and scrambled aboard did a group start and all of them taxied out within a few minutes and lined up. How I wish in the 70's they had mobile phones as 16 MIGHTY OLYMPUS engines HOWLED and woke the neighbours up early as they all did steep climb outs into the sky! The coach SHOOK and we had our fingers in our ears but OH BOY we will never forget that. If only someone could had shot video of a QRA scramble that would be worth its weight in gold! This is an excellent video and really good to watch. I was a volunteer involved with the Victor at Bruntingthorpe for many years and miss these open days when the aircraft did their fast taxy runs down the runway to the crowd's delight. Alas, the Victor, Nimrod and Comet are sitting rotting in what is effectively a scrapyard whilst the airield is now full of cars. Just out of interest, who packs your chutes? We had the safety equippers from Coningsby come and show us how to pack the chutes. The Typhoon one is just a smaller version of the Victor/Vulcan one with a few little differences. I used to watch them fly over us with their escorts in Peterlee ( north east ) during the late 60's and 70's and was off school when one plane went down in Wingate due to engine failure. The pilots landed on the A19 roundabout, they were heading out to sea but turned it around and controlled the crash into an open area of farmers fields, presumably as it was not armed those higher up decided to have it crash on land so the cause of the engine failure could be found.
You mention that you must go through the full 'pre flight' checklist, even though it is your intent to perform what you term "an abortive take-off". The proof of why this is essential is where the Handley Page Victor accidentally became airborne, when, of course, it was essential for all the flight controls to be functioning correctly in order to get the Victor safely back onto the ground. Just imagine if they'd been reckless and not bothered servicing that Victor's flight controls?!! That was excellent but for those of us watching on YT there wasn't much difference in the audio levels between the narrator and the cockpit audio. Very hard to understand either the narrator or the cockpit crew.
Why on earth have they not got some airworthy Vulvans as part of a national flight of aviation cold War relics which can be flown several times each year. There are plenty of WW2 aircraft examples still in flying order.
Can I ask why isn't this "Vulcan" part of the national collection?? considering how important it was, not only in Falkland war but towards national peace too
If only they would be allowed to take of and do a circuit of the airfield before landing, When I lived in England I used to live to go and watch aircraft taking off and landing, and more often than not the landings were more impressive than the take offs.
They should fly it once in awhile !! Such a beautiful aircraft.!! They should of kept at least one squadron of them operational to deliver cruise missiles conventional or nukes.
The tow bar is a bad design. Matt your commentary was not clear, mainly I think due to audio quality. I would like to have heard more of what you said. Are there checks associated with restoration work that you carry out on these occasions as well? At what air speed should the parachute deploy? Is the grand plan to restore XL426 to fly again? If so what are the primary airworthiness issues? Thank you for another great video. Brings back childhood memories of seeing the Vulcan being put through her paces at Farnborough in the 1960s.
Matt's commentary is on the left channel only. This is a deliberate decision because many people complain when there's a distraction to the aircraft sound. I'd gently suggest you listen to the left side only where Matt's commentary has a far higher prominence.
The main issue is, well money, but after that the last technical authority that certified the Vulcan was Airbus. It was their withdrawal of support that ultimately grounded 558, so in reality, no Vulcan will ever fly again... At least not legally in the UK...

Lottery moneyshould be allocated for their return to the skies 💯👍
Only critique, you can't select audio channel while using the mobile app
Is it possible to get a license for it to fly again?
Will this ever fly again?
Will a Vulcan ever fly again?
That was excellent but for those of us watching on YT there wasn't much difference
in the audio levels between the narrator and the cockpit audio. Very hard to understand
either the narrator or the cockpit crew.
A real nice looking plane."
Why on earth have they not got some airworthy Vulvans as part of a national flight of aviation cold War relics which can be flown several times each year.
There are plenty of WW2 aircraft examples still in flying order.
Are you telling me that Vulcan may fly again?!
Can I ask why isn't this "Vulcan" part of the national collection?? considering how important it was, not only in Falkland war but towards national peace too
At 41.24 what was the smoke near the rear right undercarriage?
If only they would be allowed to take of and do a circuit of the airfield before landing,
When I lived in England I used to live to go and watch aircraft taking off and landing, and more often than not the landings were more impressive than the take offs.
Never heard the howl, at all?
I hope this wonderful airplane will be back into the air some day for demonstration on airshows!
Not going to happen now, we can thank Airbus for their withdrawal of engineering support from 558...
@@dougle03 It is a pity. But let's hope it flies again one day.
Excellent video! 👍
Matt's commentary is on the left channel only. This is a deliberate decision because many people complain when there's a distraction to the aircraft sound. I'd gently suggest you listen to the left side only where Matt's commentary has a far higher prominence.
Wont be airworthy, costs a lot of money, marshall aerospace and BAE Systems, rolls royce, and the CAA will never certify a vulcan to fly again
Bugger all wrong with the commentary despite what some others have said. Great vid keep up the good work.
The main issue is, well money, but after that the last technical authority that certified the Vulcan was Airbus. It was their withdrawal of support that ultimately grounded 558, so in reality, no Vulcan will ever fly again... At least not legally in the UK...
the way things are going we may need to get it back in the R A F
Magnífico avión, combatió en la guerra de malvinas ..
De lado nuestro los CANBERRA .
Todos made in UK..
Saludos desde mar del plata Argentina 👋👋🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷.
be nice to go for full flight
Fly it!!!!
41:24 What was that?
Be fun to do this with Concorde.
Do all Brits spell "taxi" with a "Y" on the end?
It’s a shame they don’t do this with Concorde also.
Actually there are lots of old planes it would be great to see them at least power up.
looks like she has an axalflow engine this must be some time after the whittle engine.
sounds loke a modern turbo fan engine.
Watched this livestreamed from the audience on another channel, that also managed to raise £162 for the trust during the stream.
You’d think the Vulcan Restoration Trust of all people could spell ‘Taxi’ correctly!
Why do the pilots need to wear all the gear if they’re not taking off?
