I think the "pressure" is actually lower due to the majority of the media being in French. For Quebec-born players though the pressure can be too much as seen with Drouin
Marner would be great in MTL, because his 100 points per season would enhance the stats of other players playing with him, therefore helping us make the playoffs. Then we resign him at 6 mil per year for like 3 years or something. He sucks in the playoffs? Sure, but he plays for the leafs, let him play in the MTL system and i guarantee you he plays well. Put him on a line with gallager ffs lol. I dont like Marner for his whinyness, and playoff performance, but he would definately help the habs at the very least make the playoffs. Then if his salary goes down quite a bit, maybe he makes sense for a short term contract while we are building our young stars. Its worth it to think about, at least imo.
It's been all but confirmed Mitch is going to insist on a pay increase for his next contract, minimum 11.5 and most likely 12.5 million@@jabronirigatoni4648 that's the reason why they won't go for him, his play doesn't justify the money, especially in the playoffs. I agree at 6 million he would be the best contract in the NHL and absolutely worth getting but there's better odds a spaceship lands on the whitehouse front lawn tomorrow then Marner signing for less then his current contract
Forget about the UFA's this summer,; indeed, the Biggest Mistakes made by GM's are signing free agents...Those contracts usually end up turning quite bad towards the end...too much money for too many years !!!
1 more year. No free agents. Just use the players from the farm. I would give these youngsters a chance before trading them. A good evaluation before letting them go and becomes regrettable. Just like getting Gomes and Drouin for Mcdonagh and Sergachev. 😢
The first thing Gorton did was hire professional player development staff. The 1st line is built. They don't need to add older players, they need a healthy Kirby Dach and a right winger for him with the #5 pick. They have 2 left wingers for the 2nd line, Newhook & Roy. The top six is almost built and needs time to develop. Where is this new top six player going to play? Who will be bumped out? They have 5 young premier defence prospects with around 200 games experience combined. They need to play asap. Savard will go soon. The infant D will need 200 to 300 games each to reach full potential, in other words 3 years. A lack of goals means nothing until they learn to give up fewer goals. Trying to fix scoring with an older player now doesn't makes sense, doesn't fit into what Hughes has done. In 2 and a half years as GM, Hughes has added zero experienced goalies, zero experienced defence and zero experienced forwards to the roster, nothing beyond temps to plug a hole. They have 25 draft picks in the next 14 months, potentially 5 in the 1st round. They have 4 prospects who could make the team soon, Beck, Tuch, Kapanen, F Xhekaj, players who will need time to develop. The top six, the bottom six and the D are going to get younger before they get better. They still have Anderson, Dvorak, Armia, Evans & Gallagher on the books for a while (Price too). There is no room for an expensive UFA who would basically clog up the rebuild on the roster and on the books ... over the next 3 years. Hughes would in effect start undoing his rebuild and I think Jeff Molson would require an explanation. When Molson hired Hughes in Jan 2022 he announced the beginning of a "rebuild". Hughes has done exactly that. The acquisition phase is shifting to the development phase. There is plenty of time to fix scoring.

I think trade(s) this summer, UFA(s) the following year Who is there this year, Marchessault, Stamkos, too old. Reinhart, not leaving Florida, Guentzle, maybe, but pretty sure he resigns with Carolina
Marchessault... Old and small. We already have issues with Gally. Stamkos... Old but he can still perform as a PPG player. Reinhart... Obviously not leaving Florida. Guentzel... I don't think he will stay in Carolina, but he will want a competitive team. If you ask me, Stamkos still has value if he's given a 3-year contract with club-friendly basic wages and high performance bonuses. For some reason, I think he's someone who will play at top level for as long as Marty did. Regardless, we will need someone who can be an upgrade in the role that Monahan played for us.
I do not want Montreal to invest in older UFA's. We need a top 6 young guy to age and develop with the young core now. Trade one of your 1st round picks and a younger d man as a package. Or if you could find a way to get rid of Anderson or Dvorak. The Dawson Mercer idea im not totally against
HABS will not be able to pull off a UFA signing. We have to much money tied up in worthless salaries, Gallagher, Anderson and Armia just to name a few. We will have to make a trade, add in a couple young prospect D-man, retain 50% salary on whoever we include in the trade just to unload someone like a Gallaher or Anderson and then what will we get in return....probably someone that use to score 20 goals a season but now scores like 10 goals per and is injury prone for about 30-40 games each season and the circle of life continues.
Pointless conversation, continue to work within the system and develop assets for another year, at least, then when it looks like you're getting close to contending, sign a player that will put you over the top. Signing a UFA for next year would be a waste
In a vacuum, sure, waiting another year makes sense, but you can't control what free agents are available when. If there was a player they really wanted here long-term available this offseason, then maybe you bite the bullet and jump into FA "early". Given who may be available next offseason though (Draisaitl and Rantanen), I do think it makes more sense either way to wait another year and then try to go big.
@@Stormie33 I don't think they 'really want' any available player now, especially long term. Since Jan 2022 Hughes has not done it, added -- no goalies, no defence men, no forwards to the roster, nothing beyond 4th line temps. They have 5 high end defence prospects with almost no experience. Doesn't matter if they have McDavid & McKinnon in their top six, they ain't going anywhere for 3 years.
I wonder if they will even need to sign anybody. The goalie prospects are in place, the D prospects are almost built, the 1st line is built, the 2nd likely built with the #5 pick. They have 25 picks in the next 14 months, 4 of them 1st round picks, potentially 5 if they move Savard. They could potentially draft an entire team by the end of next year. Or they could draft 25 forwards. Hughes acquired 10 defence prospects since Jan 2022 and it looks like 3 of them will make the team. He has set himself up to do the same with forwards. Absolutely ... whole FA conversation is pointless.
Is Gentzle 35 or even older? That's a red flag for me. Marner although a bit younger, I don't want him in a Habs uniform. He vanishes when it matters most. Any other big name UFA will command big money that might hinder developing younger players. So that leaves us with the possibility of a trade as the best potential option to get a bigger forward with some scoring touch. And let's not be thinking that GMs on other teams are not aware of this. I'm sure a good number of them are seeing Kent Hughes coming from far away.
Id want him at the right price and so would other GMs. Fans are kinda dumb. We're talking about a top 10-15 player in the league year after year. He gets you to the playoffs atleast, you can work on the rest.
If you sighn stamkos I'd do it. 4 yrs 8mil. Then go all in for Byfield. Mesar Beck wpg 1st cgy 1st Imagine Suzuki Caulfield slafkovsky Stamkos Byfield Dach Newhook Roy Lindstrom/Iginla. Are we not playoff noise makers with this huge trade and possible signing
It brings a smile to my face that the Habs lost the draft lottery. Enjoy missing the playoffs for another decade, Habbies 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Have fun with that bust, Slaf
The Hab picked a d-man (Reinbacker) in a draft year that was stacked with talented forwards, and now they will pick a forward in a draft loaded with future superstar d-men. The Habs have the worst prospect management department of the whole world of sports.
Please no Marner, he would be crushed in Montreal with his attitude and his playoffs no-show.

So your topic was which players they should target and you didn't give us any names they should target other than Marchessault. What was the point?
Nobody under 6' 10", 300 lbs. Hockey skills not necessary. Let's get bigger. Go Habs.
Too small we'll never win in the playoffs with a guy like that we need a guy at least 7'1 350
I can’t spell the guys name but he played for Vegas. JM

We want no UFAs
they aren't going to target anyone, they still have 4 garbage contracts to rod themselves of, don't see any of them being traded, maybe dvorak.
No UFA are fitting Habs window. Be patient, one kore year out of the playoffs. Better trade for a kid that has grit and top6 usides.
