This was extremely helpful. I like how you explained how to find the Photo Library as I could not originally see it in Finder. You saved me a lot time and frustration to help me find enough space for an OS update. Thank you.
why are macs so complicated and difficult to understand?????!!!?? i watched this whole video and i'm STILL confused 😢 using a regular laptop was so much easier for uploading photos onto my external hard drive 😢i really dont understand this :( and my phone storage is so full idk what to do
Step by step 1. plugin external drive to you mac 2. open Photos app, then settings and navigate to settings/general click on photo location button 3. finder will open with your photos file 4. open another finder window with your plugged in external drive, see point 1. 5. drag the photos file to external drive 6. after copying is done, delete your photos file (point 3.) on your mac 7. click photos file on external drive (point 5.) to open your photos directly from external drive 8. to watch and store new photos make sure you have plugged in external drive to mac (point 1.)
Hi! Thank you for this. It is indeed helpful. I am unclear about a couple of things. 1. After the transfer, can I rename the Ext Drive (ED)'s library? 2. What you say at 1:58 mark. After the library is transferred to the ED, AND I delete the existing library from my Mac, what happens when I add new photos to my Mac (say from my phone)? If a NEW library is automatically created, then how do I add the contents of this new library to the one I have already transferred to the ED? 3. How will the difference names impact the process? Thank you!
I'm on Monterey. I have run out of disk space on my 2017 MBP and was thinking of buying iCloud storage 2TB. My question is will the folders and albums sync on iCloud exactly as I have them on my MBP Photos app? So if I delete all the contents of Photos on my MBP will I then find everything organized in the same exact way on iCloud?
It's helpful. However, following the steps to add more photos to the photos library in the external drive, it says "cannot import item" and "this item cannot be added to your photo library because it may be an unrecognizable file format or the file may not contain valid data." Do you know why? Thanks.
I've got the same issue right now - I think this is the reason The external hard drive needs to be formatted to either APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) I'm testing this right now, but currently my external HD is set to ExFAT (Which may have compatibility issues with some macOS-specific applications and doesn't support macOS-specific features like Time Machine backups.) If you're on mac, you can quickly check the format of your drive under disk utility Lots of instructions online and if you need case specific help, chatGPT is good for diagnosing and troubleshooting
Thank you! I was trying to move 85GB of pictures from an old mac to my sinology drive. At first I was trying to select all pictures and move them but it was always crashing. Didn't know I could drag the photo library!
Hey creating a new photos library on external drive and opening it and clicking on import it doesn't import anything, just takes me to import tab but there's nothing there, nothing syncing. Why is that?
Legend!! Super helpful thank you!

thank you for information
Any time
if I am using a hard drive which is split (time machine & storage) what issues could occur?
thank you so much!
