What is stopping russia from re-arming and finishing the job in 2-5 years? It literally does not matter what russia signs or promises, we had enough of their promises. The cruise missiles we gave up after signing the Budapest Memorandum are leveling our civilian buildings now, because they were designed for delivery of nuclear weapons and are inaccurate. There can be no peace until it is safe to raise children here. The country would simply cease to exist because people would continue taking the children out to keep them safe from missiles now and safe from the draft in the future. There would be no next generation without safety. *Even* if the West is so unwilling to approve NATO membership that it abandons us altogether it is better to go down fighting now than face the fate of our ancestors in the 20th century. As a democratic nation that once gave up nuclear weapons we would 100% rather go with NATO, but we might not have a choice at the end of the day.
It's a very frustrating situation to be sure. I totally understand what you're saying, especially about it needing to be safe to raise children. What Russia is doing is a form of ethnic cleansing, and that's a war crime. What drives me crazy is that almost every contemplated "solution" short of Ukraine flat-out winning the war will not include punishment for Russia's war crimes. The west (and USA especially) needed to say from the outset that we wanted Ukraine to win. Not nonsense like "we support them" or "we won't Russia win" but "Ukraine must win." I think our biggest mistake was that we dragged our feet so long on actually delivering tanks that we gave the Russians enough time to build those ridiculously dense minefields. It's hard to see how Ukraine and get back into those eastern and southern territories without air dominance, and we didn't provide that either.
Maybe steps on the nuclear path will need to be taken to make NATO countries understand and act, although it could backfire if many of them decide that it would be better for Russia to erase Ukraine than for Ukraine to have nukes. It's possible that, ironically, becoming a nuclear power would increase NATO's willingness to include Ukraine.

It bothers me a lot that places like Iowa can filter out possibly excellent candidates by holding an early caucus. Oh well.
Western policymakers don't believe in their own propaganda and know Russia will follow its nuclear doctrine and bring on the nukes if either Ukraine becomes part of NATO which means Russia and NATO are fighting directly or if Ukraine acquires nukes that can reach Moscow and becomes an existential threat to Russia.

Easy to follow and sound reasoning. However, Finding ones way out of a dense forest is difficult until you get above the canopy ... then it's clear and absolute.... You are missing a few foundamentals.... Lets start with this not being an argument between to waring enemies on the middle ground... this was and invasion of a democractic... Westward looking, peaceful nation... buy a historic enemy of Democractic Wester values which seeks to undermine the Rules based order... forming alliances with other evil autocratic despots.... That said. The other foundamental issue you have failed to adresss refers directly to what happened after the fall of the USSR and the agression to neighbours.... Giving land to Putin who has caused massive death and destruction .. only to negotiate it back over decades is completely idiotic... Look at Belarus, HUngary and more importantlt Georgia, who have had their country and future stolen.... I am not talking about and end to the war were to opposing nations keep to their side of the border, such as Korea. No.... as soon as the fighting stops... two things will happen.... Russian people and Putin will sell this war as a major success and a strong message to the people.. It was the right thing to do and we should do it again.... The Russians along with their evil allies will immediatly begin a cyber war.... just like Africa and Georgia.... The ONLY way to end the war for good and create peace in the world by deterant is to defeat Russia in a battle for the future.... defeating the agressor and sending a clear message to rought despot countries.... by making a stating to say... we stand up for right and will fight the wrongs whereever we need to .... Isn't that why we have the UN and NATO ?
Strange how the US was willing to pursue the campaigns in Afghanistan (20+ years) and Iraq (20 years) and expend huge amounts of money and put troops on the ground for pretty much zero benefit but it isn't willing to take on something that has way more importance to the overall stability of Europe for far less cost to the US.
Russia is not Afghanistan or Iraq. The military had no problem explaining a few bodybags coming home from the Middle East but they'll have a hard time explaining why it's raining nukes all over the states.
At last sanity and articulate information on what the plan is and why it needs to be this way. After the US election can you get on the phone to put those “people” in the loop. Love you work, never miss a episode.

I always enjoy your videos but I have never see you so impassioned. Bravo. Allies cannot "apply" peace to Ukraine like another aid package - this strips Ukraine of sovereignty in an insidious manner.
UKR isnt sovereign ever since the Nuland-crew got involved, or maybe even since the orange color-revolution sponsored by NATO-member-states. Nuland even bragged about them spending over 5 billion USD to get the maidan going, as did joe biden. remember the prosecutor he got fired in exchange for aid? and then bragged about it on camera. this isnt done to a sovereign country.
Oh yes they can. So long as the only thing between Russia and the assimilation of ukraine into Russia is their add and weapons, of course they can apply whatever they want to Ukraine.
@@dan-bz7dz Except that never happened. You know it didn't. One leader ordered a bunch of his citizens to be shot, and he couldn't face the consequences of that so he ran away. I find it bizarre that people want the fighting to stop and think that will be the end of it. No matter what the status is when the fighting stops, the aggression won't. Security guarantees are needed or we'll just kick the problem a few years down. We are back in a cold war era
Aggression stopped in Georgia once the agreement was reached. And it hasn't continued since. In fact there is even an improvement in relationships between Russia and Georgia. What makes Ukraine so special? Try sticking to what you agreed to at least once and see how it works out.

The response from the west has been lackluster at best when it comes to Ukraine. More empty words than anything else to a point that nobody takes western leaders seriously. Especially Russia. Action speaks louder than mere words. The European west neglected their militaries to the point there is no more deterrence. Western Europe is so dependent upon the US for protection that they cannot offer Ukraine military protection. Going nuclear is the only way to get back your deterrence. Zelensky is right.
@@braxxian Try adding what the EU spent on Ukraine minus the money they confiscated from Russia that was not theirs. And know when I say lackluster it is only money, not blood, sweat, and tears.
I’m no fan of Russia but Ukraine brought this on itself. Russia was never going to sit back and do nothing while Ukraine cozied up to the west and NATO. Simple geography has placed Ukraine in a very difficult spot, wedged between the East and the West. They had to stay neutral, they didn’t, this is the result.
@ By this logic the US should annex Cuba and Poland should annex Kaliningrad. There are probably many more examples. Or maybe Russia should treat their neighbors like neighbors and not like slaves.
Russia has been invaded several times by Western Europe down the through the years, Napoleon and Hitler being the 2 most obvious examples. Every time the invaders come through the Ukraine/Belarus area due to its flat terrain and close proximity to Moscow. Last time it happened they lost 27 million people. The Russians are paranoid about their Eastern flank being open to Western Europe and they won’t allow it. Their paranoid may be unfounded in today’s world but given their history I think they have a right to it. All Ukraine had to do was stay neutral, they didn’t. This is the result.
I always appreciate your videos. I want you to know of all of the sources of information that I take in, I hold yours in the highest regard. You are doing a service to us all by offering your insight!
Very interesting, as always ! Indeed Ukrainians are more realistic than their Western partners (only the Baltic states and Poland understand what's really at stake).
Hmm.. Well, the Nordic countries take a postion that is close to identical to the Baltic one.. I think this is part of why there seems to be a very rapid development of the so called NB8 group right now.. They were always rather closely related, & now that Finland & Sweden have joined NATO, a kind of Northern "power block" is evolving.. While it's population is only some 30 million, it's GDP when added together is over 2 trillion, so if they manage to work together, they will have some impact.. For Ruzzia/Muscovy, this is ofcourse a nightmare scenario, something they have spent hundreds of years trying to avoid.. But right now it's not all that easy for them to do anything about it..🤔🧐
Being from Slovakia, I feel ashamed about the behavior of our prime minister (and his cronies). He's a former Communist who lost touch with reality. Politically, he has always just tried to survive until the next elections. He'll say anything that people want to hear (according to polls). And then win by bussing poor people to the voting stations and feeding them some goulash. During his 13 years in power (with short breaks), the country has stagnated at best. Due to some unpopular measures he has had to implement (to reduce the deep deficit to which he also contributed big time), his support is starting to fall, so maybe we'll get rid of him in the 2027 elections.
There's an interesting story about nuke development in Taiwan, which was forced to end its program by the US but now, with the Three Gorges Dam, they effectively have a nuclear- level deterrence without the bomb, since they have a small number of advanced conventional missiles able to destroy the dam and much of southern China.
Really there is good reason an precedent for western countries to support taiwan in the development of nuclear weapons. china allowed and enabled north korea to obtain nuclear weapons and constantly threatens taiwan with war.

Nevertheless, in 2014 and 2022, Russia broke the security pledge it had made in the memorandum twice. In this context, Russia's self-defense that the Yeltsin government made promises of security, that the Maidan revolution was a violation of the memorandum and that memoranda are not legally binding are irrelevant, false and ridiculous. With this behavior, Russia has lost all credibility in the diplomatic arena and thus devalued every political declaration, every memorandum and every treaty that Russia has concluded or will conclude. Russia regularly breaks every memorandum and every treaty with the flimsiest of arguments as soon as it feels strong and sees an advantage in breaking its own promises. Disgusting 🤢 🤮
I dont think it is fair to make those statements whilst leaving the US and Uk out of the responsibility. They too made many of those statements or signed on in same spirit as Russia, yet also broke them. NATO expansion and the fact the in 2014 and 2022, both countries didnt help Ukraine is just as telling. Reality is when big powers say something, doesnt make it so. Fact that we pretend the US and UK have political credability when they realistically should have as much as Russia is implicit bias and unfortunately why most autoracies and other places dont see value in the West, its values or its words. When the West has has proven discreditable more often than not, and often to its advantage than morals, then any politicing for morals means little to those with power and no interest in following.
@@jerrymiller9039 "Nobody was obligated to follow it" - The memorandum (1994) was a binding agreement in which Russia promised to respect Ukraine's independence and borders. In 1997 Russia and Ukraine signed the agreement "Treaty of Friendship", the recognition of the inviolability of existing borders, and respect for territorial integrity. In 2003, Russia (Putin) and Ukraine signed an agreement where they ratified previous agreements regarding the Russian-Ukrainian state border and territorial integrity. In addition to the above, there are also UN Declarations which since 1945 prohibit invasions and annexation of other countries' territory.
Many years ago, in Germany, I was a member of ACE Mobility Force (Ground). It was a multi national Infantry Brigade that would form up and go to a threatened NATO country such as Turkey, Greece, Norway...NATO countries that could be attacked without attacking another NATO country. Its job was to fly the NATO flags and say: "If you attack then you are attacking ALL of NATO, not just this country". I was in the HQ Support Company...it seems the only mess hall for feeding the Brigade HQ that was acceptable to all was a US one. Kinda funny if you think about it.
Thank you Anders. Another outstanding video full deep insights explained in a clear and straight forward manner. At least I did not really understand the peace plan until you explained it to me.
Peter Zeihan thinks that if Putin can't recapture the mountain passes and ports once held by Catherine the Great, then Putin thinks that Russia is not going to survive anyway with a shrinking and aging population guarding all that flat undefendable border. Putin himself has said that a world without Russia is a world not worth having.
Yes, any Ukrainian politician that lays down their arms just because Puttler makes empty promises is a fool. It's unfortunately not unlikely that Western politicians are those fools, and when they tell Ukraine to take the deal or weapons supplies will dry up, we end up like back with "Peace in our time" Chamberlain.
Great overview. I did wonder about the value of guarantees given those given to Ukraine to give up its nuclear arsenal did not seem worth anything. Thanks for your insights.
Which is exactly why Ukraine has put forth this current idea of what security guarantees should actually mean. Let us into the nuclear umbrella of NATO, a stable security guarantee that has some history of actually working, or we pursue our own nukes, regardless of what that means for global nuclear proliferation as other nations that have serious security concerns with nuclear neighbors follow Ukraine's lead.
Ukraine broke their security guarantees . On the break up of the USSR all the former soviet republics except the baltic States joined the Commonwealth of Independent States and agreed to cooperate on economic, military and security matters. Ukraine later left the CIS and said they wished to join Nato and with those actions Ukraine cancelled their security guarantees from Russia.
Well, Ukriane broke it's constition in 2014 by deposing existing president during US-funded coupe aka nationalist Maidan. So the other parts of Ukraine did anti-Maidan. No surprise.
Ukraine really needs better help now, not future guarantees about security. I personally almost hope Ukraine will start to develop nuclear weapons and systems of delivery. The West seems to have reached it's limit of willingness to help at this level.
I don't want them to do it because it will put everyone at risk of an accident, but at a certain point of mortality for their own citizens, that is not their problem anymore. That doesn't mean I think they should. It means I think we should make their nuclear program unecessary. Kind of like we all promised when we all pushed Ukraine to give up the Soviet nukes it had.
I guarantee you the US military will take out Zelensky if he tries to arm themselves with nukes. If Russia even has a hint that the US is considering letting them have nukes then the Russians will take over all of Ukraine. Hell they might even give Iran a nuke in response. The propaganda is crazy and only serves to prolong the conflict because Ukraine has always been a pawn to force Europe to purchase more expensive energy from the US.
Best explanation of the peace/victory plan and the end game situation I have heard yet! Great job! I hope at least some leaders of our appeasement leaning countries listen to you!
Great explanation, I have not seen up to this point anyone understanding and explaining the situation that affects us Europeans all so clearly and non-negotiable. Thanks a lot for your outstanding work🙏
Or under the direction or protection of the UN, NATO or anyone. What small nations surrounded by larger aggressive neighbours will be the next to seek a nuclear deterrence? Taiwan & South Korea Which African country will be the first? Which South American country will be the first? Which middle Eastern country will be the second or third to join the nuclear club. The UN, America Europe have set the agenda.
It was a Memorandum not a ratified Treaty, it was never a binding agreement. This by the way is why biden's opinion is irrelevant. He will be out of office before any agreement could be ratified.
Thank you for this analysis. It's top class and makes a lot of sense, that is that the west cannot afford Ukraine loosing the war. But it will also show a division in the west itself, because Western Europe's ass is on the line, not so much USA...at first that is. Later when other rough states like China starts to grasp land or perhaps North Korea, because Russia succeeded, it will very much become USA's problem too.
I'm waiting for Canada to realize how vulnerable their arctic territories are. Their military commitment is abysmal, and it's not like the U.S. has lots of military icebreakers eager to rush up to fight for the Northwest Passage.
If no security guarantees, Ukraine needs it's nuclear capability returned. If the U.S and Europe are so easily cowed by Putin's threats, the minimum they should do is just renege on the 1991 guarantees, meaning they get their nukes back. Russia won't return them of course, but the power player in those negotiations was the U.S. They're responsible.
I respect the move by Selenski. Always playing nice while your allies stab you in the back can only continue so far. I like this honesty and hope Ukraine wont have to suffer more for this.
The flipside of this is that NATO should finally get its act together, by suspending Hungary's partnership in voting if necessary, so Ukraine (and other Eastern Europe countries by the same logic) would have no reason to build their own nukes.
I reckon this is what they're doing, in this very moment. They have the resources and the know-how and especially they know it's a matter of life or death for them as they can't rely on the neither the US, NATO or EU considering their collective (for many differnt reasons) wobbling resolve.
@@dan-bz7dz 35 years ago, everyone in The USSR understood what "nuclear deterrent" meant. Nobody there ever, EVER said "We shouldn't have nuclear weapons in The USSR, because having nuclear weapons means that we want a nuclear war". Quite the opposite: people knew that having a nuclear arsenal was an insurance policy *against* war, in case things ever got really bad between The USSR and the countries which it considered to be its enemies. Namely: A) let Putin decide, which would effectively mean Ukrainian capitulation, or B) pressure Putin into accepting some other decision, which effectively means following the Zelensky's plan for the reasons covered on this video.
Mr. Nielsen; Your talks are always very well organized and pertinent to the subject.

Ukraine was stripped of its sovereignty in 2014 when the democratically elected government was overthrown
@@dan-bz7dz Except that never happened. You know it didn't.
One leader ordered a bunch of his citizens to be shot, and he couldn't face the consequences of that so he ran away. The country therefore had to find a new leader. A completely different person (Petro Poroshenko) was democratically elected, and the interim government was gone. This is not what an overthrow looks like AT ALL.

Later it stops, less chance that anything called Ukraine exists anymore. But you can support what you want and even think you are helping...
@@WewasAtamans So election interference is not a form of agression ? Not allowing the citizens of another sovereign state to have a free and fair election if it does not fit the russian agenda is not agression ? @WewasAtamans are you kidding? Thebonly thing happening in Georgia is the Russians financing pro Russian fascists in an attempt to take over like Belarus, like they are doing anywhere they can.

You mean apart from the $380 billion dollars in aide to a country that isn’t even in NATO?

It'd be good to start persuading the people who he listens to policy advice from.
Wait what there's no anticipated elections in Slovakia?

There's an interesting story about nuke development in Taiwan, which was forced to end its program by the US but now, with the Three Gorges Dam, they effectively have a nuclear- level deterrence without the bomb, since they have a small number of advanced conventional missiles able to destroy the dam and much of southern China.

Yes that's why agreement with Russia is not anywhere in this plan, and why Ukraine wants to be protected by nuclear weapons one way or another.
It was a memorandum not a ratified treaty. Nobody was obligated to follow it and certainly no future leaders.
Yes Russia will have to go through a process like Germany did after World War II I would think before any western country will trust Russia again.

Another great analysis Anders - finally boots on the ground question addressed.
No security guarantee is really robust enough except NATO membership, it will be like a second Budapest memorandum
Even NATO membership would be worthless in the event of a Trump victory.
NATO is pretty much the only commitment that the ever-fickle and cowardly leadership of the West has consistently stuck to.
So you think Russia will accept no territorial concessions AND nato expansion? Your delusional
Great overview. I did wonder about the value of guarantees given those given to Ukraine to give up its nuclear arsenal did not seem worth anything. Thanks for your insights.
Thank you (once again), Anders. Your insights consistently provide much needed information and context.
Amazing video. Thx
Ukraine has already had "security guarantees", which were COMPLETELY ignored by both russia AND the west!

Sorry, couldn't resist
I guarantee you the US military will take out Zelensky if he tries to arm themselves with nukes. If Russia even has a hint that the US is considering letting them have nukes then the Russians will take over all of Ukraine. Hell they might even give Iran a nuke in response. Very informative - thank you.
Starting a war is much easier than ending it. Escalation of war is much more common than de-escalation of war.
The lesson from this war is NEVER, EVER, give up your nuclear weapons for flimsy guarantees from the USA or Russia.
Or under the direction or protection of the UN, NATO or anyone.
What small nations surrounded by larger aggressive neighbours will be the next to seek a nuclear deterrence?
Taiwan & South Korea
Which African country will be the first?
Which South American country will be the first?
Which middle Eastern country will be the second or third to join the nuclear club.
The UN, America Europe have set the agenda.
Very true
A lesson North Korea and Iran have learned well unfortunately
It was a Memorandum not a ratified Treaty, it was never a binding agreement. This by the way is why biden's opinion is irrelevant. He will be out of office before any agreement could be ratified.
Ukraine had no nuclear weapons that were under it's control. The Russians controlled those warheads.
I always look forward to your insight Anders. Tak!

Slava Ukraini!

Agreed. It's high time to force West to make a move.
Wow, one of the most concise and clear descriptions of the situationm good job

I think Ukraine should build nuclear weapons, no matter what. NATO is unfortunately not a sufficient deterrence, because it can be undermined.
So you want a nuclear war just so Ukraine can join NATO? Makes sense
@@dan-bz7dzthere has literally never been a nuclear war in all the decades we have had nukes. Why would Ukraine having nukes mean a nuclear war?
@@dan-bz7dz 35 years ago, everyone in The USSR understood what "nuclear deterrent" meant. Quite the opposite: people knew that having a nuclear arsenal was an insurance policy *against* war, in case things ever got really bad between The USSR and the countries which it considered to be its enemies.
Ukraine is now in exactly this position. So the leaders of Ukraine would be irresponsible if they WEREN'T thinking about every possible kind of deterrent, to stop more wars in the future.

Excuse me Mr Nielsen, but why are so many people analyzing and debating the pros and cons, the why's and why nots when Ukraine is the victim here? What about Russia's analysis of the same?
These events remind me so much of italy's invasion of Africa and subsequent passionately appeal to the"league of nations" by one of the Kings in 1935/36 with same similarities here. Everybody went and dissected the why's and the whats of the invaded country with pitiful results for that country disregarding mussolini's ambitions. Glory to Ukraine.
Anders has also made videos about Russia's - and more specifically, Putin's - idea of the war, as well as what would make them accept a peace. Namely:
A) let Putin decide, which would effectively mean Ukrainian capitulation, or
B) pressure Putin into accepting some other decision, which effectively means following the Zelensky's plan for the reasons covered on this video.
Thanks for the high quality analytics. You are one of the few who actually understands the situation

It's a shame that Ukraine explains "the west" for almost 3 years how to end this war. They were right in all their predictions and we still don't listen.
Who is "we"? Ukraine were the ones not listening when the US told them an invasion was imminent.
If we aren't willing to protect Ukraine, then we shouldn't tell them how they can protect themselves.
